That is strange! I had heard an earlier report about the ground shaking along the east coast of Florida, but had not heard something went all the way across!
Auntym, was this anywhere near you?
Here is the Associated Press report that I had seen earlier:
Residents report ground rumbling in north Fla.
Posted 3/18/2011 12:12 PM ET PALM COAST, Fla. (AP) — Residents of north Florida's Flagler County report that the ground mysteriously rumbled.
Spokesman Carl Laundrie says Flagler's emergency operations center received at least nine calls from residents who reported feeling the rumbling Friday.
The EOC is investigating.
Laundrie says there was no damage reported and that what the residents experienced could be anything, including a jet boom.
He says the residents' reports came primarily from the northeastern part of the county.
Flagler County is located on the Atlantic Coast, south of St. Augustine.

I have to admit, this is very strange. In the video it sounded like rocket engines to me. It was obviously very loud to those near it. I would be interested to see what comes from this.

I wonder if they live near a air force base. It sounded to me like a jet or maybe a rocket. There is no smoke (in the direction that they are looking). I wouldn't call it a "rumbling". Ah...when she calls she asks if there are any tornadoes "...out near the airport". Maybe something caught on fire and they let it burn out - that's what it sounded like on the clip.

The sound lasted a very long time to me. Could not of been anything flying over the area. It sounded sort of like a big wind tunnel to me.. It stays the same steady sound.. No wavers at all . strange

www.fivedoves.com/letters/march2011/fmriley323.htmThe Noise…..By Pastor F. M. Riley March 22, 2011 This past Saturday night, March 19th, a sister in Christ in Florida called me. While we were talking she told me that she had heard a strange “sound” which appeared to be coming from the sky, but that it didn’t sound like an airplane and she couldn’t see anything in the sky. The sky was just very dark. Nevertheless the “sound” was vibrating the ground, her home, and even causing the panes of glass in the windows to vibrate. In the area where she lived, the “sound” continued for about 20 minutes, then stopped as suddenly as it had started. She described it as a low “rumbling” sound. That was strange enough, but the next morning, the 20th……. The news media briefly commented on the same strange “sound” that the sister had told me about, saying that this “sound” had been heard in an area in the panhandle of Florida. Over 900 people had phoned the authorities reporting hearing the sound and wanted to know what was going on. Some of them had heard the “sound” for up to an hour before it just suddenly stopped. The authorities were just as mystified as the people who heard it. There were no military or commercial aircraft in the area at the time when the “sound” was being heard. This report made it very obvious that the sister who called me was not just “hearing things.” So what was it and what caused it? Update….. Now reports are coming in from all over this country and even from other countries about people hearing this strange “sound.” It always comes from the sky, yet there is no visible source of the sound; no airplane, rocket, or anything else. Today a brother in Christ sent me a video recording of the “sound.” He heard it and grabbed his video to record it and the possible source of it. But as he began the recording and looked toward the sky, he couldn’t see anything but darkness. But he did get a good recording, and I listened to the “sound” myself TODAY via his recording. Thousands of people have now heard this “sound.” Yet no one knows the source of it, or if anyone does know they aren’t telling. So what is it and what is causing it? Speculation….. Already some are speculating about various things which could cause this “sound.” Just today I have received emails from one brother stating his belief that UFO “mother ships” are arriving in various places all over the earth preparing for an invasion of the earth and a war. Yet no UFO’s have been seen or reported in connection with this “sound” that is coming from the sky. If this brother’s speculation sounds ridiculous to some of our readers, do YOU have a better explanation? It is most definitely happening in various places all over the world with thousands of people hearing it. Don’t be too hasty about speculations unless you are prepared to PROVE what is 1 causing it. At this point this brother’s UFO speculation is as good as any. TO CONTINUE READING CLICK ON ABOVE LINK

I heard a strange noise two days ago, my husband could not hear it. It was like a neon sign turned up very loud from within my home.. I could hear it from my porch .. My brain damage cant bear some sound. This was one that was making me walk off balance bad. My husband keep saying he did not hear a thing. So strange, when was this heard over Wisconson..? Was it two days ago in the afternoon? If it is from above like the other countries claim, it must be invisible.

www.unexplainable.net/Weather/Mysterious-Reports-of-Earth-Rumblings---Experts-Rule-Out-Earthquake.shtmlMysterious Reports of Earth Rumblings - Experts Rule Out EarthquakeBy Chris Capps 3/20/11 With the massive amount of attention coming recently to the seismic events around the world, several people have Earthquakes on their minds these days. And so it's only natural when the ground emanated a mysterious rumbling sound and garage doors shook, they would assume an earthquake was under way. And so it was with great surprise, that many reported the incidents only to learn from experts that no seismic activity was happening in their area. So what could be causing the low rumbling sound heard throughout areas scattered across the United States? Theories abound, but proven answers are at this moment scarce. At first, experts were suggesting the events may have been related to those taking place in Japan. It's no mystery that there has been a considerable amount of geological activity taking place in recent weeks. And yet when the data was studied, these same experts suggested that the seismic events were no doubt caused by something else. And just what that was, they could not explain. One incident, taking place in Florida saw residents getting up early in the morning only to find that a mysterious sound was booming through neighborhoods. The sound reportedly set off car alarms, shook garage doors, and generally caused chaos throughout suburban communities in Flagier county. Over a dozen calls were sent to the emergency center during and after the event. TO CONTINUE READING CLICK ON ABOVE LINK

I played the video for my husband, and his response was that it sounded like escaping steam. I, of course, questioned him on this because it sounded more like rocket engines to me. I mean, how can steam make such a loud rumbling sound? He said it would depend on the amount of pressure it was under and the rate it's escaping, but it can be quite loud and sound like a freight train roaring by.
I just thought I would throw that out there. Who knows...

Actually this did register on the seismographs, just not as earthquake activity. They monitor earthquakes and vibrations (Earth's natural process) and it registered on this one as increased activity... Don't know what the hell is going on but it's definitely weird!

According to the National Weather Service the noise was produced by a natural phenomenon called "Tropospheric ducting" which is supposedly where the sound of thunder bounces off of a temperature inversion layer and creates a noise that can travel for many miles. I found this special weather report from the National Weather Service that was issued on March 9 shortly after the weird noise was heard. SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TALLAHASSEE FL 718 PM EST WED MAR 9 2011
JACKSON-CALHOUN-INLAND GULF-INLAND FRANKLIN-GADSDEN-LEON- INLAND JEFFERSON-LIBERTY-INLAND WAKULLA-COASTAL GULF-COASTAL FRANKLIN-COASTAL JEFFERSON-COASTAL WAKULLA-SEMINOLE-DECATUR-GRADY-THOMAS 718 PM EST WED MAR 9 2011 /618 PM CST WED MAR 9 2011/
...STRANGE SOUNDS BEING REPORTED ACROSS THE FLORIDA BIG BEND...
THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL REPORTS OF VERY STRANGE SOUNDS FROM THE WOODVILLE AREA SINCE ABOUT 645 PM EST. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BELIEVES THIS PHENOMENON IS BEING CAUSED BY THUNDER FROM DISTANT LIGHTNING STRIKES... BOUNCING OFF A VERY STABLE LAYER ABOVE THE GROUND. THIS IS CALLED DUCTING...AND CAN ALLOW SOUND TO TRAVEL UNUSUALLY LONG DISTANCES. THIS SOUND HAS BEEN MISTAKENLY ATTRIBUTED TO POSSIBLE TORNADOES...BUT WE AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WANT TO BE VERY CLEAR THAT THERE ARE NO TORNADOES ... AND NONE ARE EXPECTEDI also found a brief description of the phenomenon in Wikipedea which is mainly talking about tropospheric ducting of radio waves but can apply to sounds also. It brings up several interesting points which may apply to the noise that was heard in Florida. I have highlighted those areas in red. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropospheric_ducting#Tropospheric_ductingTropospheric ducting
Tropospheric ducting is a type of radio propagation that tends to happen during periods of stable, anticyclonic weather. In this propagation method, when the signal encounters a rise in temperature in the atmosphere instead of the normal decrease (known as a temperature inversion), the higher refractive index of the atmosphere there will cause the signal to be bent. Tropospheric ducting affects all frequencies, and signals enhanced this way tend to travel up to 800 miles (1,300 km) (though some people have received "tropo" beyond 1,000 miles / 1,600 km), while with tropospheric-bending, stable signals with good signal strength from 500+ miles (800+ km) away are not uncommon when the refractive index of the atmosphere is fairly high.
Tropospheric ducting of UHF television signals is relatively common during the summer and autumn months, and is the result of change in the refractive index of the atmosphere at the boundary between air masses of different temperatures and humidities. Using an analogy, it can be said that the denser air at ground level slows the wave front a little more than does the rare upper air, imparting a downward curve to the wave travel.
Ducting can occur on a very large scale when a large mass of cold air is overrun by warm air. This is termed a temperature inversion, and the boundary between the two air masses may extend for 1,000 miles (1,600 km) or more along a stationary weather front.
Temperature inversions occur most frequently along coastal areas bordering large bodies of water. This is the result of natural onshore movement of cool, humid air shortly after sunset when the ground air cools more quickly than the upper air layers. The same action may take place in the morning when the rising sun warms the upper layers.
Even though tropospheric ducting has been occasionally observed down to 40 MHz, the signal levels are usually very weak. Higher frequencies above 90 MHz are generally more favorably propagated.
High mountainous areas and undulating terrain between the transmitter and receiver can form an effective barrier to tropospheric signals. Ideally, a relatively flat land path between the transmitter and receiver is ideal for tropospheric ducting. Sea paths also tend to produce superior results. The conditions that existed in Florida were very favorable for the formation of tropospheric ducting to occur: 1. There was a thunderstorm going on which is what would have been generating the noise. 2. There was a mixture of warm moist air and cooler dry air that creates both the thunderstorm and the temperature inversion layer that generates the tropospheric ducting. 3. There was flat land along a coastal area bordering a large body of water which would allow the sound to travel great distances. What this means is that the noise that people heard was a concentrated sound of distant thunder that was being carried for very long distances across a temperature inversion layer in the air. This sound of thunder could also have been recorded as minor seismic activity because the deep base rumble of thunder can be felt as a vibration, just like the sound of a loud radio can be felt. I am fairly confident that this is the explanation for the noise that people heard. Of course there may be other possible explanations, but this one does match all of the evidence.

Interesting. The stable layer of air is similiar to the thermocline (boundary of two different temperature and salinity currents in an ocean or lake). Humpbacked whale males sing along this boundary, knowing(?) that their songs will go hundreds of miles.
But that still does not explain what made the sound. It lasted way too long for distant thunder. A tornado somewhere would be believable to me but the article insisted that there were no tornadoes anywhere.
The same phenomenon (tropospheric ducting) allows "skip" radio signals to be received clearly much farther away than is reasonable. We used to talk to "skip creatures" while on our salmon boat using a VHF radio - but the conversations rarely lasted more than a minute or two.
Still some mystery in this whole report for me.

Ok, I can see it. This is probably the most plausible explanation. My only question is..., can this explain the consistent sound over the time of 20 mins? I mean, if this was thunder from miles away, I would expect to hear some breaks, or pauses, in the sound?

Agree the sound was too steady to be thunder. The closest thing I know to that sound is a jet engine on a test stand. I used to visit Wichita, Kansas in the fifties when Boeing was going full tilt on the B-52. They had GE engines set up on test stands outside running wide open 24 hrs a day. You could hear them for miles.
Question: IF someone had a test stand running, could this same "tropospheric ducting" condition allow the sound to be transmitted hundreds of miles??!

My understanding of the tropospheric channeling thing is that the sounds of a distant thunderstorm are redirected and channeled along the temperature inversion layer, instead of being dispersed all over the place like they normally would be. What this means is that a person would hear all of the thunder produced by all of the lightning strikes from the distant thunderstorm. For instance, if there were a thousand lightning strikes in a distant thunderstorm that covered let's say...twenty square miles...then all of those lightning strikes would be carried across the temperature inversion layer so that it would sound like one constant roar. The only reason we hear individual thunder bursts when we are in a storm is because some are closer to us and some are further away. We don't hear the ones that are far away, but if this tropospheric phenomenon carries the sounds of all of the lightning strikes over a great distance then it would sound like one continuous roar. According to what the National Weather Service report said these tropospheric channeling things do sound like tornadoes.

As for your question, Swampy, yes it could happen as long as the weather conditions were right. Any sound could be conducted over great distances by this phenomenon...the deeper the sound the easier it would be to hear. Thunder is the most common sound that is channeled because the conditions most favorable to produce it often occur during thunderstorms.

www.ufodigest.com/article/hum
The HumSubmitted by Chris Holly on Sun, 04/17/2011 - 08:54 Funny how things happen. I was sitting outside when once again I heard the agitating noise of that annoying hum. It sounds as if a diesel truck is parked in front of the house with its engine running. This hum starts out of nowhere and can last for hours at a time. Again I looked around and there were no trucks, no source of this strange noise. The hum is everywhere. You cannot tell the direction or location of it - it is just there. I do not hear this hum all the time. . It is not loud or offensive. It is however annoying and nerve breaking if it goes on too long. In the past I would search the area around my home to try to figure out what was causing this irritating noise , today I just went inside to try to get away from it. Coincidence is a strange thing. I was searching for a video I wanted to look at when I came across a video I had not seen before on this problem of the hum being heard across the other side of the world. I have to wonder what could possibly be going on? This mysterious noise is a grating non-stop humming. It is a mix of a dull diesel truck idling in the distance and the rumbling of an oil burner in your basement. It is a deep dull husky humming that can last for hours and soon lean on your last nerve causing an annoying thumbing that can drive you up a wall. TO CONTINUE READING CLICK ON ABOVE LINK

www.earthfiles.com/news.php?ID=1849&category=Environment Earthfiles Viewers Reports of Strange, Loud Booms© 2011 by Linda Moulton Howe Update May 11, 2011 - Between 7 to 7:30 PM Eastern on Tuesday evening, May 10, 2011, Virginia residents in Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, called media and local authorities to report a loud, long boom sound that shook houses. The USGS said there was no seismic activity, an Oceana Naval Air Station spokesperson said a sonic boom there could not be heard as far away as Suffolk to the west, a NASA spokesperson reported there was no rocket activity at the Wallops Island facility and the National Weather Service confirmed there was no severe weather anywhere in the region at the time. NASA's Wallop Island is upper red circle. NASA said there were no launches Tuesday evening. The loud booming sound was heard from Suffolk to Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach between 7 - 7:30 PM Eastern on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Two months before on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, from Woodville to Crawfordville, Florida, a rumbling filled the air for twenty minutes and was videotaped by a family afraid a tornado was coming, but the trees remained still, no wind. See YouTube Video of 20-minute Florida rumbling. Other loud, unexplained boom phenomena have been reported in 2011, beginning with New Year's Eve before midnight central time when at least 5,000 red-winged blackbirds and starlings fell dead to the ground in Beebe, Arkansas. Residents in Beebe and other states around Arkansas reported hearing booms that “were not fireworks.” More unexplained booms were reported into January 2011 (first report below) and in February 2011 (second report below). Probably was a sonic boom in actuality I bet. The Oceania Naval Air Station spokesperson said it "could not be heard as far away as Suffolk to the west". Well, how could the Navy spokesperson really know and document it?
The Atlantic is east of NAS Oceania, Suffolk to the west, the spokesperson in the middle geographically on the base. They are assuming if they didn't hear any boom (they naturally assuming sonic booms), how could it be heard more inland in Suffolk?
Military flight regulations permit supersonic flights for brief periods (sonic booms) over water (in peacetime), but perhaps a Navy pilot came too close to shore this time feeling 'the need for speed'. The spokesperson states something early to nip it in the bud, the media accepts it, things quiet down on their own.
Sure later a flight recorder aboard a suspect aircraft could easily confirm, but doubt that would be made public, or privy to the Navy spokesperson. The plane captain gets permission from the Squadron commander - "just erase the recorder before the next flight".

I live in Huntsville, Alabama, near the intersection of University Drive and Old Monrovia. The sound I heard started with a massive whooshing sound, as if a huge jet was passing overhead at low altitude. Then next, I heard two very loud BOOMS. This was a few hours before the bad weather began, and I waited for awhile before going back to sleep to see if something was going to happen, but all was mostly calm. At first, I thought an airplane had crashed somewhere. This was a sound I don't really think I've ever heard before, but it actually sounded like a double sonic boom, except very close. I went to work that morning and asked several other folks if they heard it too, but they hadn't. I don't think the folks I asked live in my area though. It is sometimes common to hear aircraft flying overhead in this area, since the airport is fairly close by and so is Redstone Arsenal. Lots of times, military aircraft will fly over and occasionally, there will be blasts out on the arsenal. But whatever this was, it sounded very close to my house.
