This is the story of Big Joe and Phantom 309. It's the story about a guy who is hitchiking and gets picked up by a ghost truck.

Supposedly the song is based on a real ghost story. It was written about in a book called "Railway Ghosts and Highway Horrors" by Daniel Cohen (pg. 25-28 "Big Joe"). I've never actually read it but it sounds interesting.

What else did he sing? I think he was a little bit before my time. I only know about the Big Joe song because my dad was a truck driver so I heard a bunch of truck driving songs when I was growing up. Maybe that's why I've been stuck behind a steering wheel for twenty years. I just ordered the book that has the true story of Big Joe in it. I found it on ebay. As soon as it comes in the mail I will tell everybody what it says.

I heard it was a true story too. All the truck drivers say it is. At least the old ones do. Some of the new truck drivers say they never heard of it. I guess they are too young and don't like good songs.

Yeah, I read the book. It just had another story similar to the one in the song. There were no historical facts or anything so I still don't know if the story is true or not. I might have to do some research and find out for sure one of these days.

Did you ever find out anything about Big Joe? I just heard that song on the radio and it made me think of it. I want to know which highway Joe drives down so I can go meet him. Maybe he will give me a ghost dime like he did in the song. I'll put it in my ghost piggy bank. ;D

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanishing_hitchhikerI found something on wikipidia about vanishing hitch hikers. Big Joe was listed in it. the story said they are all urban legends so I guess that means that none of them are true. Ha! I think they are all true! ;D Especially Big Joe.

Maybe some of these hitch hikers if out on the road alone at night, are picked up be ufos.. Just a thought. They would be in a position where no one would see it happen..

I just thought of something. Big Joe wasn't a hitch hiker. He was a truck driver. Sow why do they have hime listed on that hitchhiker list? The hitch hiker in that story was a real person not a ghost.

www.unionleader.com/article/20140914/NEWHAMPSHIRE09/140919447&template=mobileartThis song was inspired by my grandfather, who died in a fiery crash while avoiding a school bus. His name was John William "Pete" Trudelle. The school children on the bus survived, along with the bus driver. He and another man were killed, and the overpass was destroyed. This happened in Saugus, Mass. Use the link to follow the memorial service that was just held in his honor, 51 years later.

Thanks for the info, onemessenjah. That is so cool! I mean it's not cool that he died but that Phantom 309 was inspired by a true story. I've been wondering about that song my entire life. I've also worked as a truck driver most of my life and hope I never have to make a decision like the one he made. I just looked at the facebook page about Pete Trudelle where they showed the monument that they put up for him. I'm glad they finally did it. People who do selfless things like that deserve to be honored. Thanks again.

That is cool. I wonder if the ghost stories are true also? Maybe Pete Trudell is now a ghost and gives rides to people in a ghost truck.
