www.spaceweather.com/ TRIPLE PUNCH HOLE CLOUDS: "I've lived by the sea for many years, but never seen anything like this," reports Wesley Tyler of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. "On Friday, Jan. 7th, there were three punch hole clouds in the same place." He grabbed his camera and recorded the phenomenon: Considered a mystery for many years, punch hole clouds appear on rare occasions all over the world, sometimes attracting widespread attention, e.g., the famous Moscow UFO cloud of 2009. Recently meteorologists have penetrated the mystery: punch holes form when airplanes fly through thin layers of high altitude clouds. If water droplets in the cloud are supercooled (below freezing but still liquid), they can suddenly turn to snow when shocked by the passage of the plane. This mini-snowstorm occurs over a circular area much wider than the airplane itself. Not all flights through banks of clouds will produce snow. According to Wired Magazine, only about 7.8 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered with clouds at the right elevation for supercooled droplets to form. Because jet aircraft don’t generally cruise at those altitudes, they may only form hole-punch clouds when they take off or land. The apparition of three rare cloud-holes in one small area suggests a busy airspace around Myrtle Beach. Indeed, the Myrtle Beach International Airport is just miles from where the photo was taken. Or maybe punch hole clouds are a bit of a mystery after all.

www.spaceweather.com/ WOW...WOW...WOWEVENING SKY SHOW: When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look south. The waxing crescent Moon and Jupiter are in conjunction, beaming brightly side by side. Try looking before the evening sky fades to black. A bright conjunction framed by twilight blue has a special beauty that you won't want to miss. Sky maps: Jan. 9, 10. WEEKEND AURORA WATCH: "For the third day in a row, the aurora forecast has been correct and just looking out the window is a true pleasure!" reports Fredrik Broms of Kvaløya, Norway. This is what he saw on Jan. 8th: Bonus: "While hunting for auroras I also got a stray meteor up my sleeve for the first time," says Broms. "It always pays off to be outside in the dark (well.. green)." NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of continued geomagnetic activity during the next 24 hours, a result of an ongoing solar wind stream blowing around Earth. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras. more images: from Frank Olsen of Ersfjordbotn, Norway; from Hanneke of Tromsø, Norway; from Helge Mortensen of Kvaløya, Norway; from Thorbjørn Riise Haagensen of Kvaløya, Norway; from Frank Olsen outside Tromsø, Norway

Yay! We haven't had a good aurora display up here all winter! Awesome. I can't wait. Thanks for sharing Auntym.
I bet that will make the Japenese tourists happy. They like to come to Alaska on a winter vacation because they believe conceiving a baby under the Aurora will make their child special.

Today I saw some Aurora while I was driving home from work. It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing. While on my way to work today, I saw a meteor. It was moving very slowly. It was an orangeish white color. It was cool.

Yikes, Auntym! I have never heard of these before. Although I feel for you, at the same time I am fascinated. Keep us informed. many years ago my husband & i saw a rainbow cloud in florida.... i always assumed it was an alien ship hiding inside the cloud.... ;D ... i still feel like that is what it was.... but others are saying this is a sign of an earthquake....i've never heard that before....to the best of my knowledge florida has never experienced an earthquake.... all this crazy weather earth has been experiencing lately makes me really nervous..... we do have hurricanes and some tornadoes..... and i'm knocking on wood right now....never earthquakes....

My friend Deric Hughes tipped me off to a new urban legend spreading around: rainbow clouds appearing in the sky shortly before earthquakes. Lots of folks are buzzing over this on Twitter, for example.
I’ll cut to the chase: these clouds are not physically related to earthquakes in any way. But how I know this will take a wee bit of explanation.
The above is from a Discovery/Bad Science site - I was unable to get the address (used to be on the top of my page - Anyway - the clouds form high from ice crystals. Ice crystal formation is not linked in any way anyone can think of with earthquakes. It would fit into the illogical omens category.

www.theweatherspace.com/news/TWS-3_22_2011_quaketrio.html Trio of quakes strikes Japan, largest group since March 11thPublished on March 22, 2011 8:20 am PT TheWeatherSpace.com - By Dave Tole - Staff Writer (TheWeatherSpace.com) -- The third largest aftershock to strike Japan since March 11th has hit with two others. A trio of quakes, 6.6, 6.6, and 6.4-magnitude hit off the coast of Japan on Tuesday evening. This is the strongest trio of quakes in a two and a half hour period since the 9.0-magnitude quake hit on March 11th. No reports of damage or injuries from this trio. This is the area the Japan Meteorological Agency said a 7.0-magnitude quake would happen within days.

Cool video Auntym. He did capture the movement of the Aurora right... except for the jerky hesitations of course. This guy was smarter than the guy I saw on the road going up the hill to my house a couple months ago.
I had gotten off work at midnight and got to the road to ascend the hill at about 12:30 AM. This guy was parked in the middle of the road without his lights on and I almost didn't see him until the last second...
I slammed on the brakes behind him, and because it was -30 I got out and asked him if he needed help. "No... I'm just taking pictures..." he said and pointed up to the aurora-clad sky above us.
~rolls eyes~
Real intelligent guy... I was cursing him, and he was probably cursing me for ruining some of his time-lapse photos for driving around him with my high-beams on. Ah well...

Rainbow at night..pretty cool methinks. Also we're in the middle of a solar radio storm..noise coming from the sun we can hear. SOLAR RADIO STORM: Did you know sunspots can make noise? Consider the following: "Over the past few days, I have been recording a sustained solar radio storm at 180 MHz," reports amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft of New Mexico. "It consists of Type I radio bursts and sounds like ocean surf. Here is an audio sample from March 27th at 1930 UT. The sun seems to be entering a new phase of dynamism." Radio emissions like these are caused by plasma instabilities in the sun's atmosphere above sunspots. With the sun becoming 'radio-active,' it's no coincidence that sunspots are emerging in abundance. Leading the way is behemoth active region AR1176, shown here in a photo taken yesterday by Larry Alvarez of Flower Mound, Texas: spaceweather.com/

Fascinating how Titan, one of Saturn's significant moons has always intrigued artists. Here is the first modern realistic astronomical painting - Chestley Bonestell's 'Saturn as seen from Titan' painted in 1944. A painting that launched a thousand spaceships. Contrast the Bonestell work, (quite a valuable art piece now) to the April 1, 2011 apod illustration in what artists then and now attempted to depict as scientifically accurate based on the best known information of their times. It seems from the 2011 depiction, the methane rains on Titan have eroded considerably Bonestell's mountain peaks since 1944. Hi, Shami. Titan is the second largest moon in our solar system and the only one that has a dense atmosphere. It is approximately one and a half times as big as our Moon.

That picture..is almost the picture I saw when we were doing the 'experiments' on the other forum and somewhere over there, it's in their old posts. It was the third time we had done the collective mind thing and I was standing, very alone and mostly in the dark, a place with a very stark landscape but what I watched was Saturn 'rising'..coming up over the horizon of this planet ..huge and amazing. I could see bluish rings and fiery orange and it was incredible..then gone...everything over in just seconds. My view of it wasn't as distant seeming as the picture there, it pretty much filled my view but the perspective is so similar. It's like a deja vu thing...cool.

Hi Jo. Have you ever seen a movie called Pitch Black? It starred Vin Diesel and was about a spacecraft that crashes on an alien planet. There was a scene in the movie that sounds very similar to what you just described. It showed a huge Saturn-like planet rising up above the horizon and blocking out the sun. It was pretty cool.

He was very good in Triple X also. I think it is called XXX. It's not X-rated though. Pitch black is the first part of the Chronicles of Riddick trilogy. The other two weren't as good as the first one though. Maybe I should do a movie review of it to go along with the book review thread.
