Photo Shows Far Side of Moon Like Never BeforeSPACE.com Staff Date: 21 March 2011 Time: 04:37 PM ET This image, taken by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft, is the most detailed view of the moon's far side to date. CREDIT: NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University A powerful NASA probe has created the most detailed view yet of the far side of the moon.NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) took the picture, which was released along with a flood of other data from the spacecraft last week. The photo is actually a mosaic of thousands of different lunar farside images taken by the lunar orbiter's Wide Angle Camera. The new picture provides the most complete look at the history and composition of the moon's farside to date, and should serve as a valuable resource for the scientific community, researchers said. The moon's hidden faceTidal forces between the moon and Earth have affected the moon's rotation such that the satellite now only presents one side of itself to us, which scientists call the near side. The "far side" — sometimes incorrectly referred to as the "dark side" —remained hidden from human eyes until 1959, when the Soviet Luna 3 spacecraft first snapped photos of it. Since then, scientists have learned that the far side of the moon is a very different place than the near side. Widespread basaltic plains called "maria," deposited by volcanic activity long ago, cover much of the near side. But basaltic volcanism was much more limited on the far side, and as a result the region sports just a few isolated maria, researchers said. The new image was built using data from LRO's Wide Angle Camera, one of the three imaging tools on the spacecraft's main Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). The LROC observations are just one small part of a huge mound of orbiter data released on March 14. When taken altogether, LRO's seven science instruments delivered more than 192 terabytes of data in the new release — enough to fill about 41,000 DVDs, NASA officials said. Among the new LROC data products is a global lunar map with a resolution of 100 meters per pixel. Also released werehigher resolution maps of selected parts of the moon, which were stitched together from observations taken by LROC's two Narrow Angle Cameras, researchers said. And there are more moon maps and mosaics yet to come."The LROC map products being released over the next week will not only serve the lunar science community for years to come, but also provide a roadmap for human exploration of our nearest neighbor," LROC principal investigator Mark Robinson, of Arizona State University, said in a statement. Our moon from 30 miles upNASA launched the $504 million LRO spacecraft in June 2009 along with a piggyback probe called LCROSS. LCROSS crashed into a shadowed crater at the moon's south pole in October 2009 in a hunt for water ice, which it found. LRO is about the size of a Mini Cooper car, and it's equipped with seven instruments to observe the moon. The spacecraft circles the moon in a polar orbit, at an altitude of about 31 miles (50 kilometers). For the first year of its operational life, LRO spent most of its time scouting the moon to help NASA plan for future lunar exploration missions. In September 2010, the probe wrapped this mission up and shifted into more of a pure science mode to help scientists better understand Earth's nearest neighbor. Even before the latest data release, LRO had delivered in a big way, helping researchers generate the most detailed map of the lunar surface ever made.

I can see heidi's bunny easier than I can see any man. I see the bunny too!! At first I was like, "Bunny?! Where?" Then I saw it after about 45 seconds lol... The man in the moon reminds me of when I was visiting my sister and her kids. We went outside to look at the moon. I told them (they were ages six and four) about the man in the moon, and asked my niece if she could see him. She squinted up at the moon and said, "Yea... I see him! I SEE HIM!" And my nephew hid behind me, attaching himself to my legs lol... I had to explain to him that the man in the moon wasn't going to get him... lol... the poor child is like me... has night terrors too... It was still cute though...

I found a video showing the surface of the Moon filmed from the Earth through a twelve inch Meade telescope. It shows some pretty good detail.
If they can get photos of the Moon like this with small scope why couldn't they use a bigger telescope to look at the surface of Mars?

Some one point to me the place on the moon of our early Astronauts Here is a site that shows all of the Moon landings that we have done. www.time.com/time/2008/moon_landings/Since 1965 we have launched over 65 space craft to the Moon. Some of them just orbitted it while others actually landed. There were a total of six different missions that landed people. Apparently all of these landings were on the side facing the Earth. No manned missions landed on the far side.

I can see heidi's bunny easier than I can see any man. Now come on Sky. I have seen the mans face in the moon the first time I seen it as a child at night. Two eyes at the top are darker shade than the rest of it. The face covers the entire moon side we face. lol lol Oh I dont see a bunny myself. I see more eyes at the top... ;D and two legs and feet at the bottom. ;D How ones mind works amazes everyone. I can never see a thing in images all the member post half the time. But the moon does have a face. Sort of a mouth which looks like it is going to whistle any second. ;D ;D ;D

I realized it was craters I was viewing but Gee!! from here it looks like a smiley face in a way. I just ask my neighbor as I seen her outdoors with her dog through my window. She said.. no! I have never seen the face people talk about. ;D ;D ;D
I got a new question for my facebook friends tomorrow.. ;D ;D
I should thank you for bringing to my attention, but in way I don't like knowing this fact now. ;D ;D

I just can't see it. Whenever I look at the Moon all I see is the Moon. The close up photos have craters in them but still no man. I've only seen the man once and it was pretty obvious then but now I see nothing. Maybe I just don't have a good enough imagination. I can never see shapes in clouds either. I did see Heidi's bunny though.

I don't think a person has to have a very big imagination to see the face in the moon. The craters you see at the top of the m oon are the eyes of the face.

www.eutimes.net/2011/09/moon-to-have-no-fly-zones-by-month-end/ Moon to have no-fly zones by month end[/color] Posted by EU Times on Sep 14th, 2011 THE PURPOSE: NASA's "recommendations" of no-fly zones are for preserving and protecting Apollo missions' historical sites and artefacts. No-fly zones will come into effect on the moon for the very first time by the end of this month! Why, even buffer zones that spacecraft may have to avoid will come into existence. The reason: avoiding any spraying of rocket exhaust or dust onto certain historical sites and artefacts on the moon. The historical sites are of course the Apollo landing sites and artefacts present on the moon. And the “recommendations” are for preserving and protecting these historical sites. There are currently more than three dozen historical sites that preserve the more than four-decade-old remains. “Apollo 11 and 17 sites [will] remain off-limits, with ground-travel buffers of 75 metres and 225 metres from each respective lunar lander,” states the July 20 guidelines of NASA. Science journal had obtained the guidelines. No legal binding According to Science, by the end of this month NASA is expected to come up with a set of “recommendations” for spacecraft and astronauts visiting the “U.S. government property on the moon.” Of course, these recommendations will not be legally binding as the 1967 Outer Space Treaty makes it clear that the lunar surface has no owner. Despite the lack of ownership, NASA is hopeful that other countries will respect the U.S. sentiments. Incidentally, the restriction list contains more than the historical sites. For instance, the list includes studying discarded food and abandoned astronaut faeces. CONTINUE READING: www.eutimes.net/2011/09/moon-to-have-no-fly-zones-by-month-end/

www.popastro.com/moonwatch/moon_guide/geology2.phpscience.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2006/15mar_moonquakes/Seismometers placed on the Moon by Apollo astronauts from 1969 through 1972 have detected seismic activity till switched off in 1977. These lunar seismometers have recorded quakes on the Moon up to 5.5 on the Richter scale lasting up to 10 minutes! When this happens, it seems the Moon reverberates chiming like a bell. Due to ample water on and within the Earth's crust, compressible rock structures act like a foam sponge deadening vibrations. As a result, fortunately most 'Earth' quakes last a minute or less. Bet this bolder got a nudge from a quake, inertia and 1/6 gravity started it rolling down a long slope. The repeated patterns in the lunar soil track seem to betray a large irregular bolder. George Filer (Mufon) in his weekly Filers Files obsessed with imaginary Martian and Lunar structures will no doubt post it must be a alien lunar rover disguised as a bolder. ;D Steve

It looks like a rock to me too. There are two smaller ones with trails behind them just to the left of that one and another very faint one in the upper left corner. Plus the fact that there are so many rocks near each other would suggest that the bottom of an incline is there where all the rocks stop rolling.
