If that is supposed to be a shadow cast by some humanoid figure it's going the wrong way. All the other shadows go the opposite direction. I think it's just an optical illusion kind of like the Mars face and seeing Jesus in a plate of mashed potatoes.

You're right about the shadows. My thing was the idea that at any given time there would be an alien sitting on a rock to have his picture taken...it struck me as more than passing odd...or very coincidental..and I don't believe in coincidences. Seems that some of the hoaxers go to very great lengths for a spot of fun.

Noah Petro, a deputy project scientist for the Lunar Renaissance Orbiter (LROC) mission that is currently orbiting the moon, told Pix11 that the image was taken by either the Apollo 15 or 17 manned missions to the moon in 1971 and 1972 respectively. He points out that a current LROC doesn't show any lunar feature that could cause that pattern on the ground. 'My best guess, is that something (dust, an eyelash, scratch on the negative) was on the film,' Dr Petro told Pix11. 'Remember, this was in the pre-digital days when all sorts of nasty things could happen to film.' The popularity of the video can be explained by a psychological phenomenon called Pareidolia, which is the brain's response to seeing faces and other significant objects in random stimulus. International Business Times recently featured a discussion of the claims of Scott Waring, a researcher who utilizes Google Moon to scour the lunar surface for anomalies. At the coordinates 19°43’02.81″ N and 20°30’52.97″ E, a dark area that appears in photos supports further evidence of a lunar base which, Waring suggests, may be inhabited by aliens. Waring provides a brief analysis: “On the back side alone there is seven to eight right angles. The darkness around the edges seems to tell us that there is a large cavity underneath the structure, under the ground and also along the edges here there is a walled area which tells us there is a cavity there because the wall is to keep things from falling in.” While such claims often allege the existence of alien visitors on the moon (as suggested by Waring), some proponents of “Moon Base” theories place the origin of the lunar bases much closer to home; Earth, to be specific. The idea of alien moon bases has remained ever-present in our culture, following the realization that Earth’s extremities might serve as strategic points of advantage following the Second World War. This logic had been, in part, the impetus behind the Nazi interest in exploring Antarctica, along with subsequent exploration carried out by Admiral Richard E. Byrd during what became the ill-fated Operation Highjump, during which cryptic statements Byrd made were misconstrued by media and fringe researchers over time, which has contributed to rumors that he discovered a Nazi base while he was there. Taking things one step further, conspiracy theories surrounding Nazi travel to the lunar surface, as well as similar ideas about plans for lunar bases that would utilize the Moon’s off-planet location for Star Wars-style strategic advantages during wartime have filled the pages of fringe history books, as well as movies including the campy Iron Sky, which played with the idea that after World War II, a faction of Nazis had escaped and gone into hiding on the far side of the Moon. There is some legitimacy to claims about world governments seeking to put men on the Moon on a semi-permanent basis. At the website of the National Security Archive, documents recently disclosed dating back to the late 1950s reveal that the United States had even toyed with the idea; specifically two Army and Air Force studies that occurred between 1959 and 1961 that specifically probed the possibility of whether a military lunar base could be created, with intention of using such a facility for Earth and space surveillance, in addition to a project called the Lunar Based Earth Bombardment System. Illustration courtesy NASA NASA is going on a $1.25-billion road trip, and all we’re getting is this lousy boulder. Today, the space agency announced a modified plan for its Asteroid Redirect Mission: Instead of bringing an entire asteroid back to lunar orbit, an uncrewed spacecraft will snag a boulder. “We’re going to have a sensor suite on the spacecraft that will allow us to actually look at the boulders and actually make an educated choice about which ones we’re going to pull,” says NASA Associate Administrator Robert Lightfoot. “Let’s get on with it.” As described during a news conference, NASA will select a final destination for its spacecraft in 2019. There’s already a space-rock short list that includes Itokawa, Bennu, and 2008 EV5, the last of which is currently at the top of the list. The spacecraft will launch in December 2020, then spend about two years heading into an asteroid belt in Earth's neighborhood. Once it gets there, it will retrieve a boulder up to 13 feet (four meters) wide from the surface, then spend anywhere between 215 and 400 days circling the asteroid, using its gravity to nudge the giant rock into a different orbit. Next, the spacecraft will return its prize, the boulder, to a stable orbit around the moon in 2025. At that point, astronauts could rendezvous with the boulder and collect samples. Well, that feeling might come back to you if you read Michael Carroll’s “The Seventh Landing.” For you see, this book anticipates the imminent Constellation program of 2009 that was going to return the United States to the Moon and then on to Mars. We know what happened instead and we know a few tears must have been shed, perhaps even yours. Yes, this book is all about the Constellation program and its Ares I and ARES V launch vehicles. But more than that, and what makes it still applicable today, is that the book really gets into a lunar landing program as the next step in humankind’s expansion off of Earth — and how it’s the logical precursor to the next step: a settlement on Mars. This logical progression jumps right out via the table of contents. First there’s an excellent chapter that recovers what’s already transpired; the good and bad of both the Apollo program and the early Soviet space program. The writing style and copious quantities of vintage photographs bring a sense of immediacy and presence. The second chapter takes you to the promised land. This land is full of large expendable launch vehicles; human rated and ready to transport material and supplies. Here’s where the value of this book continues on to today. That is, the book provides a systems analysis point of view on, for instance, why various engines would be better or how to use ping pong balls to design a lunar capsule. With this, the reader can start to get a grasp on the complexity of this undertaking. Interesting yes, but what about that purpose again? Oh yes, it was to put humans on the Moon. He he. I'm not a teacher, but as a student back in the day I did my fair share of it. The moon does have influences on the Earth and people. I believe certain events can trigger the butterfly effect. Is it just a coincidence that the moon is located and spinning on it's axis in such a way that it provides the Earth with many necessary ingredients for life to exist ?

Tonight's (July 31) moon will be a gorgeous sight, but it won't look different than any other full moon. The term Blue Moon has come to refer to the second full moon in a given month (since full moons come around about every 29 days, most months only contain one). So set your sights skyward tonight, but don't expect a change in the moon's regular hue. NASA explained the July 31 Blue Moon in a video released earlier this week. However, there are rare occasions when the moon can appear to turn blue. According to the Science@NASA blog, observers have reported the moon having a bluish tint following volcanic eruptions. These explosions send particulates (like ash and smoke) into the air that scatter red light, but let blue light through, creating a natural blue filter and giving the moon a sapphire complexion. "Clouds of smoke containing micron-sized oil droplets produced lavender suns and blue moons all the way from North American to England. At this time of year, summer wildfires often produce smoke with an abundance of micron-sized particles — just the right size to turn the moon truly blue." This is not a term that astronomers use, but here are some facts about what will actually be happening. Full moon is when the sun, Earth, and moon line up with the Earth in the middle. As seen from the surface of the Earth, the moon is fully illuminated. Because it is exactly opposite the sun in the sky, the moon rises in the east just as the sun sets in the west and, roughly 12 hours later, sets in the west just as the sun is rising in the east. Because the Earth is constantly revolving around the sun and the moon is constantly revolving around the Earth, full moon is an instantaneous event, occurring when the moon is exactly opposite the sun. This week this happens at 2:35 p.m. EDT on Saturday, August 29. A minute earlier, the moon’s phase is “waxing gibbous,” and a minute later it is “waning gibbous.” Each full moon occurs roughly 29.53 days after the previous full moon. “Roughly” because the moon’s orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle, but instead is elliptical in shape. The exact time of full moon varies a little bit from month to month. The most important result of the moon’s elliptical orbit is that sometimes the moon is closer to the Earth, and sometimes farther away. The time when it is nearest is called “perigee” and the time when it is farthest is called “apogee.” What we are most interested in is perigee, the date and time when the moon is closest to Earth. This month perigee occurs on Sunday, August 30, at 11 a.m. EDT, about 18 hours after full moon. At that time, the moon will be 222,631 miles (358,290 km) away from Earth. Scientists have found that the moon's crust is as fractured as it possibly could be after the beating it took 4 billion years ago. The researchers used data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL), which are twin spacecraft that orbited the moon throughout 2012. Each measured the push and pull of the other as an indicator of the moon's gravity. The researchers then mapped the gravity field in and around more than 1,200 craters on the far side of the moon, a place known as the lunar highlands. They found that the lunar highlands appear to have been so heavily bombarded that the impacts completely shattered the upper crust, leaving these regions essentially as fractured and porous as they could be. Not only that, but further impacts may have had the opposite effect and helped seal up these pores over time. The researchers spotted this particular effect in the upper layer of the crust, called the megaregolith. This layer is dominated by relatively small craters, measuring 30 kilometers or less in diameter. In contrast, it appears that deeper layers of crust, that are affected by larger craters, are not quite as battered and are less fractured and porous. "The whole process of generating pore space within planetary crusts is critically important in understanding how water gets into the subsurface," said Jason Soderblom, one of the researchers, in a news release. "On Earth, we believe that life may have evolved somewhat in the subsurface, and this is a primary mechanism to create subsurface pockets and void spaces, and really drives a lot of the rates at which these processes happen. The moon is a really ideal place to study this." The findings reveal a bit more about the moon and its formation which may, in turn, shed a bit of light on how the Earth formed, as well.
