WHAT LIES INSIDE JUPITER?The clouds of Jupiter hide many mysteries--from the roots of monster storms to possible stores of exotic matter. NASA's Juno spacecraft, scheduled to launch on August 5th, is going to find out what lies inside the giant planet. I don't see why Jupiter wouldn't have a solid core just like other planets do. it's just that it is so big and has such strong gravity that the atmosphere is thicker. Saturn should be the same way.

JUPITER AT OPPOSITION: Tonight Jupiter is at opposition, opposite the sun as seen from Earth. This means the giant planet will be up all night, rising in the east at sunset and soaring overhead at midnight. Jupiter at opposition shines ~36 times brighter than a 1st magnitude star, so it's easy to find. Get out your telescope for an unusually good view of the planet's belts, storms, and moons.

Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) shows a nice picture of Jupiter from an earth based telescope. Its the Oct. 22, 2011 photo of Jupiter near opposition. Back when I had an observatoy sized scope, I use to see in awesome detail of the planet including 4 dark(sometimes 6) cloud belts, the great red spot, and the 4 galilean moons. Even with smaller scopes most of these details can be viewed. Right now the only eyepiece I have for the scope I currently have is lower power for wider field of viewing which has its advantages and disadvantages depending on what Im trying to view. Im considering purchasing some astronomical binoculars 25x 100mm. Those are some big objective lenses - 4 inch ! Im still not sure if im going to yet or not though but its tempting .

Huge belts in the giant planet's atmosphere have changed color, radiation hotspots have faded and flared up again, and cloud levels have thickened and dissolved, all while space rocks have been hurtling into it the gas giant, astronomers said. Jupiter is an intriguing and beautiful planet to observe. These changes discussed in this article are noticeable even under smaller amateur telescopes . The great red spot is a hurricane like storm that is so large you could fit about 3 1/2 Earth's in it's diameter. Amazing !
I have watched this storm throughout the years and lately there have been some obvious changes. It is getting fainter and more difficult to see at times compared to just a few years ago. It was discovered in the 1600's and is still very active. Other areas show white spots as big as Earth and these are part of the violent storm system within it's atmosphere.
The comet which struck ( there have been a few observed in the last few years, one asteroid very recent) caused highly noticeable changes and disturbed the entire system. At times through the scope I can see 4 bands, other times I can clearly see six at about 180x or more. It is very beautiful !

I really envy your sky watching Cliff But I'm thrilled you share ;D Thank you Jo. Tonight was just awesome . Not only did I stare at Jupiter and it's moons for hours along with it's cloud belts, I also viewed the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) which showed swirling dust lanes and a very bright core. Next to it in the same field of view was a companion Galaxy M32, and another fainter one still called M110. I also observed The Sculptor Galaxy and several star clusters. Hopefully someday soon I can start sharing some pictures but that's very costly to purchase the entire setup. Time will tell. One step at a time I guess. I know I talk about this stuff a lot ( probably too much ) but I can't help it. ;D

Why do you reckon the clouds are in straight lines like that? Is Jupiter rotating so fast that it causes the clouds to form belts? Yes, I think rotation is the main reason. It rotates on it's axis about every 10 hrs. which is very fast considering the size of the planet. There are separate cloud decks in Jupiter's atmosphere which contain different chemicals causing the colors to vary. Jupiter is a fascinating planet. It has lightning bolts that are around 1000 times intense as Earth's. Throughout the upper atmosphere winds are so strong it would make a hurricane on Earth seem like a spring shower in comparison.

I manage to get photo but Jupiter looks blue . Why? Others are weird but so in my camera. ;D The moon has rings around it like Jupitor and they are blue. It is beautiful really but does not make sense to me. No matter how many times I tried between 9 pm and 11 pm there was the blue rings. Jupiter itself is sitting in this blue ring. The better photo was done at 6 pm and it has no blue ring. Not talking about a halo but a ring. In the first photo Jupiter is blue. Why? I could not keep my hand steady in the first pics. That would not make it appear blue? ;D

I tried to take a picture of it while I was at work but it didn't turn out- just the moon turned out I showed my co-workers when I went out for a cigarette and I was like "That's Jupiter" and they were like "Wow, I didn't know that!"

That will be the closest Jupiter/moon conjunction until the year 2026. I heard this from another Astronomer just now : Back in the day in Australia there was a lunar occultation with Jupiter and a local citizen called in to report a mothership with 4 smaller scout ships coming from the moon. ;D ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For those who do not know that would be Jupiter and 4 of it's bright Galilean moons - Io, Europa , Ganymede, and Callisto.

A fascinating thing about one of Jupiter's moons called "Io" is that it contributes to the planets colorful bands when volcanic explosions ejects material from the moons surface which then get trapped in Jupiter's atmosphere. Thanks, Cliff! NASA's Juno Spacecraft : Close Encounters with Jupiter On March 8th, 2016 Earth and Jupiter will have a close encounter. The giant planet will be "up all night," soaring almost overhead at midnight and not setting until the sky brightens with the twilight hues of sunrise on March 9th. In July, the Juno mission will give us an even closer look.
