I receive lots of ghost stories from readers who happen to be native Tucsonans. The most compelling tales recently received have been about the 22nd St. Antique Mall and a popular 4th Avenue tavern called the Surly Wench. I had the unique priviledge of tagging along with Tucson’s own Southern Arizona Ghost and Paranormal Society aka S.A.G.A.P.S., on investigations of both locales.
It is always great to work with SAGAPS team for their professionalism and for the warmth with which they treat clients and guests alike.
22nd Street Antique Mall – 5302 E 22nd St.
The 22nd Street Antique Mall just beckons for visitors and shoppers. The building is filled with stalls of various vendors hawking antiques and collectibles. For years, this store has been reported to be paranormally active by store employees and customers. There have been reports of whispers, shadows, apparitions and people being touched. These reports are logged by employees and customers in a notebook kept at the front cashier counter which may be read at any time. In 2008, the 22nd St Antique Mall was investigated by the ghost hunting group Paranormal Plains. Their investigation is featured in a book entitled “Scarizona” which is also kept at the cashier counter for perusal. Aside from some EVPS, their investigation did not yield much haunting evidence.
The history of this midtown strip mall building is unremarkable . However, it is thought that objects can and do sometimes hold residual energy from previous owners. Particularly if the object was present in a time of extreme distress or emotion for the owner. The 22nd St. Antique Mall is filled with treasures of military and historic significance. Could this be the reason for reported paranormal activity at this location?
First, SAGAPS interviewed owner Myra Perry and then conducted the investigation. The owners themselves reported strange occurences while working in the store, such as disembodied voices and the sensation of being watched.
Aside from some EMF spikes, SAGAPS did not experience or capture anything unusual. As most of us know, spirits do not perform on cue. With all the merchandise that regularly moves in and out of this store, it’s possible that what once was a residually haunted object may have been sold or moved out by a vendor. On the day following the initial investigation, I accompanied Laura Ziegler from SAGAPS to verify and document some high EMF readings. There were a couple of metal artifacts that gave off some high EMF spikes, but again we did not experience or catch any extraordinary activity.
