Haunted Places: Lemp Mansion[/size]
By Haunted Places
The Lemp Mansion in St. Louis, Missouri is commonly said to be one of the 10 most haunted locations in the United States. The enormous foundation has been through a number of monumental changes over the years, but the one thing that always remains is the consistent belief that the Lemp family continues to haunt the home.
Built in 1868 by Jacob Feickert, father-in-law of William Lemp, William and his family moved into the home in 1976 and immediately began renovations. The Lemp family was well known in the area. William's father, Johann Adam Lemp, had moved to St. Louis from Germany in the 1830's and soon built one of the most famous breweries of that time.
Upon Johann's death in 1862, William took over the immensely successful Lemp Brewery, and was already vastly wealthy. The Lemp home contained 33 rooms before the renovations, and soon evolved into the famous Lemp Mansion. In fact, the Lemp family helped Pabst, Anheuser and Busche breweries get their start.
In 1901, the Lemp family suffered the first of many tragedies when William's favorite son, heir apparent Fredrick Lemp, died of heart failure at the age of 28. Having experienced health issues his entire life, Fredrick's death was incredibly difficult for William to take. He would arrive for work, but he was never the same, always preoccupied and jittery and rarely seen in public.
