Blaze Sparking Fires in Mountains Above Los Alamos LabPublished June 28, 2011 | Associated Press LOS ALAMOS, N.M. -- Firefighters worked through the night and into Tuesday hoping to put out spot fires erupting ahead of a wildfire in the mountains above the northern New Mexico town that is home to a government nuclear laboratory. "That's the biggest threat we have right now to homes in the community," Deputy Los Alamos County Fire Chief Mike Thompson said late Monday of the fires that left hillsides above the town of Los Alamos glowing. A crew that had been working at the Arizona wildfires took over efforts at the New Mexico fire Monday, about 18 hours after the blaze started. It has quickly grown to 44,000 acres -- or 68 square miles -- and ignited a spot fire on lab property. Another firefighting team was expected to arrive Tuesday because of the potential for the blaze to more than double in size. The wildfire has destroyed 30 structures south and west of Los Alamos. It forced the closure of the lab and, for many, stirred memories of a devastating blaze in May 2000 that destroyed hundreds of homes and buildings in town. Laboratory officials said the wildfire sparked a spot fire on its property that was soon contained Monday, and no contamination was released. They also assured that radioactive materials stored in spots on the sprawling lab were safe. Flames were just across the road from the southern edge of the famed lab, where scientists developed the first atomic bomb during World War II. The facility cut natural gas to some areas overnight as a precaution. www.foxnews.com/us/2011/06/28/thousands-evacuated-as-growing-blaze-nears-nuke-lab/

The neighbors are at it again..... Mag Lab's new magnet shatters world record2:53 PM, Jul. 18, 2011 The laws of attraction are again being re-written at Florida State’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory with the introduction of the facility’s new split-coil magnet. The custom built system last week shattered the 17.5 Tesla world record set in France in 1991 by creating a magnetic field of 25 Tesla. “Tesla,” named after Nikola Tesla, is the measurement of the strength of a magnetic field. The new magnet’s 25 Tesla strength is 500,000 times that of Earth’s magnetic field. The magnet – used in an experiment for the first time last week – is housed in the same area as several other record breakers, including the 45 Tesla Hybrid Magnet that is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. To design the new magnet, scientists and engineers basically had to start from scratch. “None of the technologies that the Mag Lab is famous for, that they are world leaders in, were applicable,” said scientist Jack Toth, who headed the project. “We had to invent completely new methods. Nobody had even dared to try this before,” he added. While world record breaking is something to brag about, scientists stressed that the biggest technological breakthrough with this magnet is the amount of accessibility to samples in the magnet’s field, calling the advancement “the biggest breakthrough in magnet technology in 20 years.” Unlike other magnets, which only have a 1- to 2-inch insertion spot at the top of the magnet for experimental samples, the split coil magnet offers four conical shaped ports into the field. The elliptical openings are approximately 8 by 3 inches at the exterior, and are all placed at 90 degree angles around the magnet’s central field. The typical problem of the magnetic field weakening as the number of openings increases required the team to rethink magnetic structure. Another problem conquered by engineers was withstanding the amount of force between the two magnets that is drawing them together. “The construction of this magnet has been a real challenge and a real credit to the team here,” said Greg Boebinger, director of the Mag Lab. “While we anticipate mainly physics and materials research benefiting from this breakthrough, other scientists from chemical and biochemical fields have expressed interest in working with the magnet,” Boebinger said of potential users. Toth said, “The possibilities go beyond what I can think of,” adding that the magnet’s existence would “open the door to a whole host of new experiments.” www.tallahassee.com/article/20110718/FSU/110718019/Mag-Lab-s-new-magnet-shatters-world-record?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

I wonder if it spooks anyone else..having magnets that are equal too or stronger than the earth's magnetic field.

No problem! Understand, while the fields they create are incredibly strong, they are also quite small--a matter of a few cubic inches.
It IS funny, though, to read some of the letters to the editor in the local paper--during extended droughts, folks will write in demanding that the Mag Lab "turn off their magnets" so it can rain.....

Britney Wehrle, 11-Year-Old Girl, Hit By Lightning On Sunny Afternoon Simon McCormack First Posted: 7/27/11 11:11 AM ET CANONSBURG, Pa. (Associated Press) -- An 11-year-old western Pennsylvania girl is recovering after she was struck by a bolt from the blue. Lisa Wehrle tells the Observer-Reporter newspaper of Washington, Pa., that the sun was shining when her daughter, Britney, was struck by lightning Friday, apparently from a storm several miles away. Lisa Wehrle says, "There was no rain. It was a beautiful day. All she heard was some thunder." The lightning hit Britney as she was walking down a hill in North Strabane Township with a friend about 2:30 p.m. that day. The bolt hit her on the left shoulder, leaving a burn-like mark and exited her wrist, where it left another mark. She was treated at a Pittsburgh hospital. Doctors discovered her arm was broken, but otherwise she's OK. www.aol.com/2011/07/27/britney-wehrle_n_910831.html

The North American Aerospace Defense Command told The Daily Herald () that the jets were summoned when air traffic controllers couldn’t contact the pilot Wednesday afternoon. The president was in Chicago for a fundraiser celebrating his 50th birthday. bit.ly/nlePwwThe jets intercepted the Kitfox Model 2, a kit airplane, piloted by Myrtle Rose of South Barrington, a Chicago suburb. Rose turned the plane around and returned to Mill Rose Farm Airport, annaD spokesman Lt. Michael Humphreys said. Rose’s plane didn’t have a radio, which forced annaD to use the jets to identify and intercept the plane, Humphreys said. With such temporary flight restrictions, “there are no lines drawn in the air. It’s sometimes a little hard to tell where you’re at,” annaD spokeswoman Stacey Knott told the newspaper. “Typically, it’s just a mistake.” CONTINUE READING: www.paranominal.com/unexplained-phenomena/weird-news/fighter-jets-intercept-75-year-old-womans-plane-during-obama-chicago-visit/

Sougraigne is very close to Rennes-Le-Chateau, whose charismatic and mysteriously wealthy priest, Béranger Saunière, partly inspired Dan Brown's bestselling novel Photo: ALAMY Police have been called in to patrol the area near the village of Sougraigne, population 82, in the Aude region over fears the startling claims will lead to a sudden, massive influx of unwanted treasure hunters. The cave's whereabouts on a rocky, wooded hillside were a long kept secret by the three would-be "raiders" and only made public last week because of an acrimonious dispute between the men. Sougraigne is very close to Rennes-Le-Chateau, whose charismatic and mysteriously wealthy priest, Béranger Saunière, partly inspired Dan Brown's bestselling novel. One of the book's characters, the Louvre curator, borrows the Saunière surname. Legend has it that untold treasures are hidden in the vicinity of Rennes-Le-Chateau. These include the gold of the Visigoths, said to include the original meannah, the seven-branched gold candelabrum used by Moses in the wilderness and later in the Temple in Jerusalem, built by King Solomon. Wreck of Capt. Morgan's Pirate Ship Found, Archaeologists SayPublished August 05, 2011 FoxNews.comCaptain Morgan / Chris Bickford A team of U.S. archaeologists study the wreckage of a ship they believe to be part of pirate captain Henry Morgan's lost vessel. The dive team discovered approximately 52x22 feet of the starboard side of a 17th century wooden ship hull and a series of unopened cargo boxes and chests encrusted in coral. The lost wreckage of a ship belonging to 17th century pirate Captain Henry Morgan has been discovered in Panama, said a team of U.S. archaeologists -- and the maker of Captain Morgan rum. Near the Lajas Reef, where Morgan lost five ships in 1671 including his flagship "Satisfaction," the team uncovered a portion of the starboard side of a wooden ship's hull and a series of unopened cargo boxes and chests encrusted in coral. The cargo has yet to be opened, but Captain Morgan USA -- which sells the spiced rum named for the eponymous pirate -- is clearly hoping there's liquor in there. "There's definitely an irony in the situation," Fritz Hanselmann an archaeologist with the River Systems Institute and the Center for Archaeological Studies at Texas State University and head of the dive team told KVUE Austin. The Captain Morgan rum group stepped in on the quest for Captain Morgan after team -- which found a collection of iron cannons nearby -- ran out of funds before they could narrow down the quest. The new funding allowed the team to do a magnetometer survey, which looks for metal by finding any deviation in the earth's magnetic field. In the 17th century, Captain Henry Morgan sailed as a privateer on behalf of England, defending the Crown's interests and pioneering expeditions to the New World. In 1671, in an effort to capture Panama City and loosen the stronghold of Spain in the Caribbean, Morgan set out to take the Castillo de San Lorenzo, a Spanish fort on the cliff overlooking the entrance to the Chagres River, the only water passageway between the Caribbean and the capital city. Although his men ultimately prevailed, Morgan lost five ships to the rough seas and shallow reef surrounding the fort. "To us, the ship is the treasure -- the story is the treasure," Hanselman told MSNBC's Alan Boyle. "And you don't have a much better story than Captain Henry Morgan's sack of Panama City and the loss of his five ships." Artifacts excavated by the dive team in 2010, including the six cannons, as well as any future relics will remain the property of the Panamanian government and will be preserved and displayed by the Patronato Panama Viejo. hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_PLANE_INTERCEPTED_OBAMA?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT UPDATEAug 5, 6:53 PM EDT 75-year-old pilot explains encounter with F-16s75-year-old pilot thought military jets wanted to see her 'cute' plane when it flew into Obama's airspace:By DON BABWIN Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) -- Myrtle Rose was taking a short flight over suburban Chicago when the 75-year-old aviation enthusiast looked out her cockpit window to see two F-16 fighter jets. She assumed the military pilots were just slowing down to get a closer look at her antique plane. It wasn't until she landed her 1941 Piper J-3 Cub that friends and the police told her the attention was much more serious - for straying into restricted airspace during a visit by President Barack Obama. Rose, who tries to fly every day when weather permits, said she had been itching to get back in the air Wednesday after a number of days on the ground. She normally uses her computer to check for airspace restrictions, but it wasn't working properly. "I hadn't flown in over a week," she said. "It was a beautiful afternoon." After some guests departed her home, she "just climbed in the airplane and left." To make matters worse, she said, "I didn't have my radio on. I was just flying around." On any other day, the brief flight would never have attracted notice. But Obama was in Chicago for a fundraiser marking his 50th birthday. "There's really no excuse for not knowing," said Lt. Col. Mike Humphreys, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which scrambled the two warplanes, a proposition that costs $9,000 an hour for each jet. "Anyone who flies an aircraft should know the restrictions." Rose said she was about 30 miles from O'Hare Airport when her plane was intercepted. As the fighters appeared, she wasn't alarmed. "I thought, `Oh, well, they're just looking at how cute the Cub is," she said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press. The blue-and-yellow plane had won a best-in-class award at the Oshkosh Air Show, a huge annual gathering in Wisconsin. Good for her she can fly like that. A Piper J-3 Cub (yesterday article said she flew a Kitfox Model 2, a kit airplane). She should have had her radio on, hard to imagine in that airspace not having a radio on. But the Lt. Col. from ADC should chill out too. Heck, next time shoot her down, explain to those basstards in Congress all the money they'll save in Medicare. Republicans love killing old people taking away their health care so tea partyers can 'decrease the surface population'. Pilot Myrtle Rose of South Barrington must have used that old saw again.....'must have been radio malfunction'.... Steve

Even if your car does not do this, tell all your friends & relatives & neighbors who could use this for help. What to take to bed with you - not a joke. Pretty neat idea. Never thought of it before. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car.The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime. P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic. Would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone. My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him. He can activate the car alarm and then she'll know there's a problem.

This is a great idea. I work with a handicapped counsellor - parapelegic. He slipped while transferring from the driver's seat of his van to his chair. He set off the alarm and the office manager wandered out to see what was going on in the parking lot. (I think he is brave to be driving around alone).

Yes, Robert like John was shot..Ted (black sheep of the family) ended up in the drink). There were slugs recovered from John's body but not as many as there were holes for them..the missing brain was a rumor..what there was left that Jackie wasn't wearing (not a lot) was examined along with the body. There were autopsy photos on line a couple of years back and the evidence they had recovered..the evidence just fell a bit short. And then...young John comes along all full of charisma like his dad..and dies in a plane crash. How much coincidence to you believe in?

Scientists discovered the ancient whale named it after the author of "Moby Dick," whose bite ripped huge chunks of flesh out of other whales about 12 million years ago. The prehistoric creature grew to between 13 and 18 meters (up to 60 feet) long, not unusual by today's standards. But unlike modern sperm whales, Leviathan melvillei, named for Herman Melville, sported vicious, tusk-like teeth some 36 centimeters (14 inches) long. This finely honed killer evidently dined on other whales, researchers said in the journal Nature. They report finding a skull of the beast in a Peruvian desert. The researchers named it in tribute to the 19th-century author and his classic tale of the great white whale, which includes frequent digressions on natural history that punctuate the action. "There is a chapter about fossils," one of the paper's authors, Olivier Lambert of the Natural History Museum in Paris, said. "Melville even mentions some of the fossils that I studied for my PhD thesis." By MEAD GRUVER Associated Press CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) -- Did Butch Cassidy, the notorious Old West outlaw who most historians believe perished in a 1908 shootout in Bolivia, actually survive that battle and live to old age, peacefully and anonymously, in Washington state? And did he pen an autobiography detailing his exploits while cleverly casting the book as biography under another name? AP Photo/Andrew Carpenean A rare books collector says he has obtained a manuscript with new evidence that may give credence to that theory. The 200-page manuscript, "Bandit Invincible: The Story of Butch Cassidy," which dates to 1934, is twice as long as a previously known but unpublished novella of the same title by William T. Phillips, a machinist who died in Spokane in 1937. Utah book collector Brent Ashworth and Montana author Larry Pointer say the text contains the best evidence yet - with details only Cassidy could have known - that "Bandit Invincible" was not biography but autobiography, and that Phillips himself was the legendary outlaw. Others aren't convinced. CONTINUE READING: hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_DID_BUTCH_SURVIVE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2011-08-15-11-09-43
