I collect various WWII artifacts, guns, helmets, even an occassional uniform, that is not shot all to pieces. Well a friend of mine from the military, called me and inquired if I was interested in a "dress unform", from WWII, general. I assumed he was joking, thinking he had a bet with somebody that I'd bite, say "sure", send him some money and I might get it back with a card telling me "I ought to be careful with my money". He said he'd send it to me, if pleased, send him a check in a sizeable amount. So, it arrived, crated up etc. I opended it up, well to my amazement or horror, was a full formal black dress uniform of a general who served supposedly in the Waffen SS during WWII as a tank corp commander. Nice copy I thought, called my friend and only got, "you'll see, it isn't a copy" and nothing more. There were a lot of papers that came with it, all seemed to be in order, but I couldn't figure out how it was in such condition, as if had just been made, with exception of the various badges, awards, etc. The belt, boots, hat, all seemed in perfect condition, leather was as new in the belt, boots, the hat was not damaged in anyway. There were photos of the man in question, wearing the uniform in various functions but nothing about his death or the uniform, in particular. I have some relatives that work with the government and I called all of them, telling what I had, who sent it, who had last worn it, all the info. I had. All 6 said they would get back in touch and for me to pack it back up in the crate, and definately, "NAIL THE *darn* CRATE UP". Wish I had listen to my relatives come to think of it. Anyway, I hung it up, placed the pants over the back of a chair, boots in front of the chair, hat, on the seat, hung the jacket over a spare hanger, and went to bed. I am not prone to auditory or visual hallucinations but all that night , the various uniform pieces got relocated throughout the house, never near each other but just scatterd here and there. About daylight, I noted all the uniform pieces seemed to vanish. I looked throughout the house, which is pretty big anyway, nothing. In desperation I looked in the double closet in the guest bedroom and there, was the entire uniform, pants hung in order, as was the jacket, hat on the shelf, boots below the pants, etc. All was in order, as if the previous owner had not liked the way his uniform was casually treated and decided to treat it as it should be. I still have it, in a display case, with triple locks, which is interesting, as there are times when the entire uniform gets relocated back to the guest bedroom, where it was laid out years ago, that one moonless, stromy night.
