Lorelei This darn storm has started, my husband went to the store for me as I got this cold and sinus infection.. We are going to get more than we ever have since 1911, the weather man says.. Hope he makes it there and back ok..going to snow for two days without a break.. I will take pictures of my yard and street and bring it to facebook...
Anyone else here in the line of this mess? Oaklahoma to New York. I will drink my juices and sit here.. lol As long as our power stays on it will be a blessing...I can't even see out my window right now for the snow...
Poor Ron a couple of years ago, could not even buy a generator, during that last one.. I'm referring to spotless..There was none to be had, he went out of state to get one..

I had no idea about the storm, I just now woke up and my mom told me about it and that my sister will soon be right in the middle of it and they can't get ahold of her on the telephone... I'm sure she'll be OK as long as her ~ahem~ husband isn't driving the car. He tends to wreck cars when it snows she doesn't let him drive on snow anymore... he wrecked 3 of them in 2 years... their insurance is quite high. We have a coleman stove and a kerosine heater, oil lamps, a generator and a wood stove in our basement in case of power outages. Most Alaskans do. I hope you have such things as well... Also, if the temperatures will be as cold as you say they will, you can salvage all the stuff from your freezer by keeping it outside... I had to endure a 5 day long power outage here once when we got 5 feet of snow overnight one year. The good thing about having lots of snow is you can bring it in and melt it and use it for drinking water... ...just don't melt the yellow snow. ~smirk~ (Sorry. Old Alaska joke...) I wish you and your family all the best Lois. ~hugs~

Great post Lois. You make me glad I live in So. Ca. Btw I spent 11yrs in Rhode Island so I know what bad weather is. I also have read it also gets even colder in Alaska, like 50 below. Am I right Lorelei? I think the record low temperature in interior Alaska is -70 but I'm not sure... I've seen it -60 below before... when I was in college. They closed classes that day thankfully... lol... Interior Alaska is usually colder than the other parts of Alaska, even the North Slope, (the Northern part of Alaska up by the Arctic Ocean where the oil fields are) but they have stronger winds up there so it's about equal. This winter has been rather warm... as I said before in the Global Warming thread that Jo started, we've had unusually warm winters these past 6 years or so. Here, it used to drop to -40 and pretty much fluctuate between -40 and -50 through December and January. Now we're lucky if we hit -40. This year, the coldest it got was -36. ~shrug~ Spring will begin in mid to late March or possibly early April... that means all the snow and ice will melt and ice jams in the rivers will probably cause flooding which happens a lot here. After spring we'll get mosquito swarms from the puddles of water everywhere. After the mosquito swarms the temperature will climb be 70-90 degrees (rarely we get higher than 90...) with 24 hours of daylight. After things dry out, wildfire season will begin and the air will be chocked with smoke in certain areas. In mid to late August things will start to cool off again and we will have a very brief fall. In late September or early October it will snow again, and then the cycle will repeat. Fairbanks Alaska has the largest temperature range of any other city in the US. Our record high is 102 I think... I'm not sure but it has gotten very warm here. That happens when the sun doesn't set you see...

Oh... another thing Lois... Go into the bathroom and turn on the hot water and leave it on a very low trickle. That will keep your pipes from freezing... if your region is not normally this cold, you may have to worry about that...

We are pretty warm today 17, but the wind is 45 miles an hour and the snow is just spinning tops. It is falling but more is flying off the ground, there is no milk at the stores .. they are running out of food and said no trucks in for at least two days.. I want my MILK.. now..
We are shut in for now. a white out. Lorelei go on face book I put picture when it was five inches a this noon.. what a mess. we are suppose to be 22 inches when we wake up.. in the morning.. Thursday it will start to clear.. 0 is the temp for tomorrow. so the wind chill will be bad.
years ago we helped my son do a paper route by car, you could not ever get out of the car to walk two houses.. My hand were hurting.. the temp that morning was 70 below.. I'd rather have the snow..

Who said no trucks? I'm still out here driving through this mess. If I can do it those other trucks can too. They are probably just loafing off.

We still have pretty good visiblity at the moment. I heard on the radio there is a lot of fog and blowing snow to the west of where I am. I don't think the really big storm has got to where I am yet. We had about five inches of snow last night. Right now there is ice everywhere. The roads are a mess. I'm parked for tonight so at least I don't have to drive through it anymore. Tomorrow I am supposed to head up to Chicago but the weatherdude is predicting one to two feet of snow up there! That's not going to be fun.

Wow! It is -1 or 2 here at night (Centigrade) and warms to 12 to 15. Snowdrops are poking their heads out. There's lot of snow in the mountains but its been rained on and the avalanche conditions are very dangerous. A couple of people have already died this winter in BC - on snow mobiles in the back country. Apparently its worth it - they go out and sacrifice a few every year.
I'm trying to get to the Fraser river to look for rocks before the spring thaws makes the river gravel beds inaccessible. We might go by boat this year - land on bars that people can't walk to. Just might find a piece of jade. (Don't really care one way or the other but it is beautiful)

Sky you be carfull, a lot of roads are closed, 8 foot drifts.. cover them.. you may get to where you will have to wait it out. I live a hour and a half south of Chicago... our small towns are all shut in.. I'm sure 55 to Memphis is open if you can get to it.. South of St Louis did not get a thing. My family live south of St Louis 90 miles.. I still want my milk.. lol lol

I really feel for Queensland Australia. Not only were they just flooded out but now they're contending with a category 5 typhoon with 175 mile an hour winds predicted

There is about two feet of snow on the ground in Chicago. Some of the roads were completely covered up. It is a mess. The news said this is the third worst storm Chicago has ever had. naturally I am right in the middle of it. I was hoping my company would send me someplace warm after this but the fools are making me go to Wisconsin next. Unbelievable. If I get any further north I'm going to need a sleigh and some reindeer to pull me along.

Well we got enough here for a sledding, My Christmas trees I put out in front of our house was covered up come morning, after it was over. You know the white lighted spiral ones. they were only four feet, but here is the stars on top sticking out of the snow.. It was the 50 miles an hour wind that made it worse than what it could of been..
Lorelei.. Wish I could take a pic and put it on here.. everyone but old shamira can.. Patty tried to explain it too me. To put it in photo bucket first, then it ask the size? What size I said, I don't have any idea.. lol lol All I heard from the others telling others on Mufon, make it smaller!!!lol not mine but someone who had made it too large for the screen..
I will tell you something else, I have never used my crl once. don't know anything about it.. I use it for one thing only.. and that is to get my frozen screen off my computer. Crl atl and delete, it works most of the time..
this is the storm thread right? how come my daughters encounter is on here?? lol lol I won't remember how to find it this way..
I thought the moderators moved the storm post only.. hee hee.

It was me who moved it. I don't see anything about your daughter's encounter on this thread Lois... I thought I just moved the posts about the storm over here. Sorry if I confused you. If you e-mail me the pictures Lois, I can post them on here for you if you'd like. I don't know how to do it on a PC but I can do it on my Apple...

Although, make sure to wear your long johns. It is bitterly cold..., unless you were the guy I saw walking down the road in shorts yesterday!

Sky, put a snowmobile on your expense report...... That's a good idea, Swampy. I could get a great big 8 wheeled snowmobile and just plow right over everything. ;D It's all covered with snow anyway. Sky, if you get past Milwaukee/Madison, you'll be fine. The storm did very little north of there. Although, make sure to wear your long johns. It is bitterly cold..., unless you were the guy I saw walking down the road in shorts yesterday! Thanks for the info, sanseed. Do you live up in Wisconsin? I'm supposed to go up to Oshkosh but I am waiting for a train to bring my load in to Chicago. It got delayed because of the snow. Imagine that. I wasn't the crazy lunatic you saw with the shorts yesterday, but I do sometimes wear shorts when I go running in cold weather. (Ok, maybe I'm a little bit crazy ) I ain't dumb enough to run on roads that are covered with ice and snow though. I would probably slip and break my leg and die if I did that. What fun would that be?

I'm so glad you were not that guy in shorts. I was seriously doubting his sanity. We had wind chills of 10 below yesterday. Even I wouldn't wear shorts when it's THAT cold... That reminds me of the two idiot teenage girls in the parking lot of the grocery store last month. It was -30 and they were dressed for clubbing in skimpy little spaghetti-strap dresses and two inch heels, running (as fast as one in heels can run) and giggling to their car. I hate stoopid people...

lois. No, the storm didn't go that far north into Wisconsin, so we didn't get the snow. Just a lot of wind. It stayed in the southern regions. @lorelei. Yes, at -30 I am happily wearing sorels and fur lined make-you-look-more-round-than-tall coats.
