I've been interested in this for awhile. I don't know what to think of it, but it seems a nice notion to believe that it occurs to those who are very close to God. It gives me that warm-fuzzy feeling inside.

I don't particularly care what any church does but I am inspired by the accounts of stigmata too. Of the more than 330 persons identified with stigmata since the 14th century, more than 60 were canonized or beatified by the Roman Catholic church (see canonization). Simply put, as a matter of faith, of course it is.

Hard to believe that it turns out fine. And while I'm at it, the Movie Seventh Seal is very good and if you like this one I believe you'll like it.
Stigmata - ah....it has been "proven" that people who are told they were burnt while under hypnosis develop blisters as if they had been. However, the body can make blisters pretty easily (it requires a release of histamine, the same bio-chemical that creates the allergic reaction of hives). Can the body create wounds? Hmmmm.
Can a person create wounds and later not remember? Many accounts of persons with Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personalities) can and do. One aspect will hurt the body or even try to kill another alter (without realizing that that would be death for them as well). This diagnosis is problematic - it is in the DSMIV (the diagnostic bible of official names) but many doctors and psychiatrists don't "believe" in it. I have had a few persons who manifested this in my office and believe me, I believe.
Then there is the historical fact that if Jesus was cruxified in the usual manner he did NOT have nails driven through his palms. People were tied in place and perhaps spikes through the arm bones. The body weight would have caused a nail in the palm to simply rip out after awhile. (Sorry this is gruesome). Yet most stigmatics have palm injuries. And few have a hole in their side which was in the account and also other accounts. Again this points to the expectations of the person bearing the stigmata.
And now I'm going to tie this together and please note it is just a THEORY and not even one that I believe or disbelieve. Persons who believe they have been abducted COULD manifest burns (remember the histamines) and also probably create scoop marks. They could also bruise IMO. That's just something to ponder while we are pondering all aspects of this stuff.
