The Thieving Poltergeist
By Stephen Wagner

William is harassed by knocking, footsteps, and the unrelenting disappearance of objects from his home
We have heard many reports from readers about their experiences with disappearing object phenomenon, but few are as severe and relentless as the frustrating and puzzling activity that William has endured. Keys, thumb drives, glasses – even pond fish – mysteriously vanished, then just as mysteriously returned (mostly).
What’s the cause? Ghosts... poltergeist activity... something else? This is William’s story....
The fish vanished from the pond, then returned. Where did they go?
SIX MONTHS AFTER moving into my current house, I was watching an ethnographic film on the Roman Catholic rite of exorcism. As I did, I began to hear knocking. I thought my children were doing it. I went to quiet them so they would not wake the baby. They protested that they did not make any noise and thought I was making the noise. As we walked upstairs to check things out, the latch on the door began to go up and down rapidly. No one was upstairs.
During the next few months, we learned to live with harassment. One night while reading the story of a "ghost" (Old Jeffrey) in the Wesley rectory (Epworth Rectory) in England, we heard a loud bang. We thought the cat fell through the ceiling! Upon investigation, all the books on the top shelf were thrown to the floor. The books on exorcism and related topics were neatly stacked while the other books were randomly laying on the ground.
Once, I pushed the door open to check on my child. As I pulled it shut, a toy donkey materialized in the pathway. During this time, the computers often did auto-typing. The babysitter refused to return because of the sound of footsteps on the wooden floors.
THINGS VANISH
The disappearing objects were most annoying, however. It began with a ping pong ball that went between some books on the bookshelf. It was our last one. We removed all the books and could not find it. Several weeks later, it reappeared on top of the books where it disappeared.
Keys disappeared most often. Sometimes I would put them down to go to the bathroom and return and they would be gone, even though I was home alone. Later, they would reappear in the place I originally left them.
Once, my thumb drive disappeared from my pocket. Three weeks later and after several washings, it reappeared in my pocket. Incredibly, I knew it would be there before I put my hand in my pocket! The same thing happened with keys. Everything always returned. Eventually, things went back to normal with the help of a cleansing ritual.
ACTIVITY INTENSIFIES – VANISHING FISH
