One astrologer fears volcano's, earthquakes and worse from the closer-than-usual moon. On March 19, the moon will swing around Earth more closely than it has in the past 18 years, lighting up the night sky from just 221,567 miles (356,577 kilometers) away. On top of that, it will be full. And one astrologer believes it could inflict massive damage on the planet. Richard Nolle, a noted astrologer who runs the website astropro.com, has famously termed the upcoming full moon at lunar perigee (the closest approach during its orbit) an "extreme supermoon." For the rest of the article: news.yahoo.com/s/space/20110310/sc_space/willmarch19supermoontriggernaturaldisastersNaturally...his predictions have no backing by the scientific community..but they don't agree with much lately.

Were there volcanos and earthquakes 18 years ago or did nothing happen? If they happened back then they might happen again. If they didn't then there is nothing to worry about.

Well..China had a 5.6 that killed 24 people and destroyed 1000 buildings...Japan had two..a 7.3 and a 6.2 (was not an aftershock) a 5.0 in the Philippines and a 6.5 in Indonesia this week. California had it's usual 20 or so 3 point and under. Wouldn't take much to qualify as a 'stressor'. I live in Southern California and I have this quasi feeling that we'll see a largish one around the 15th..even before the moon does it's dance. Hey it's California..at least it's not a Tornado

Speaking of the Moon I found some other really interesting stuff about it at this website: www.synapses.co.uk/astro/moon1.htmlSome of these things I didn't even know...like the Earth and Moon actually revolve around each other...sort of. I didn't know that, but it makes sense now that I think about it. It also explains why one side of the Moon is always facing us, which is something I have always been wondering but never actually knew.

I was above the usa and it was full of water except treetops showing.. was all I could see. Guess I was not looking for sky scrapers..A thought came as I woke up.. Noah

Lois, after today, your dream might be making sense.
When I turned on the news this morning and heard the news about the earthquake/tsunami, I thought of the super moon article. There are such mysteries in our world.

Just got up and seen the quake in Japan. with water covering. I thought it was us, I told my husband yesterday. I don't dream of floods, just quakes. He said well a quake can cause tsuami.....so Strange..So I thought of Washington state. They say one could hit there any time.. I guess viewing water you don't see land and a location.. This may not be what i dreamed about, but it may of been is all I'm saying.. Hope hawaii will be ok.. I got chills when I just heard this.

It is the moon...I imagine it would effect the world not just the United States. I'm guessing some countries are already feeling it as it is steadily getting closer.

That's the 48 that are joined together. I just heard on the news that big waves are hitting the northwest. Not humongous ones that cause damage but big enough to make the surfers happy.

Yes..we had tsunami warnings in San Diego even. Now a volcano is going off in Indonesia. I'm sure the scientsts are right and the moon has nothing to do with it

Yea my best friend last night was telling me "We're under a tsunami warning."
I gave her a blank stare. "You're kidding, right?"
She shook her head, seriously.
I stared at her. "We're at least 300 miles inland on all sides..."
She laughed and said, "The whole state of Alaska is under a Tsunami warning..."
"I think we'll be OK..." I smirked.

I thought it wasn't supposed to be really close until another week from now. Of course I haven't really been paying attention. The thing could be about to land on me for all I know.

Well..I'm not a genius scientist (although some of them are starting to blame it on the moon) but if it's going to be at it's closest point on the 19th..wouldn't that make it closer now than it was? Maybe that's just enough to start stressing weak points in the earth with stronger stressors yet to come. From the look of the fault maps..California is really shaky right now (no pun intended). There are small quakes all up the San Andreas and even into Nevada and that's just not normal (I watch them a lot). More activity in Idaho, Washington and Wyoming not to mention Arkansas. Something has to be effecting the plates..and since the moon is coming in closer (and we know it pulls on tides) I'm willing to blame it Kind of an Occams razor to me..'The simplest theory that fits the facts of a problem is the one that should be selected'. Maybe it's the sun and not the moon..heck..maybe it's both. I'm just looking around and seeing too many quakes more than normal, and a couple of volcano's and thinking maybe this is just the beginning of some nasty stuff for a lot of people. Guess we'll know if I wake up with beach front property Look at the quake map for us..it's a lot more active than when I posted it a couple of months ago. The area around the 'ring of fire is much more active too. If not the moon or sun then I surely have no idea. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/

In that case I hope it is the Moon because it will be over in a couple of weeks and we can get back to normal. If it is something else...

Rush Limbaugh mentioned the supermoon in his broadcast today. Naturally he was skeptical of all of the disaster predictions. He made his own prediction that since people did not know about it 18 years ago they probably would not pay any attention to it now either. I'm paying attention to it. It looks pretty bright.

I was watching it as it was rising tonight and it is already pretty big and bright. It definitely is noticable. If I have clear skies tomorrow I will take some pictures with my new digital camera and see if I can get them onto the computer somehow. I should be able to figure it out before the next supermoon shows up.

Tonight is the Supermoon! I can't wait to see it. I was looking at it last night and it already looks pretty impressive. It's big and bright and shiny. It looks like you can see more details on it than normal too. This would be a good time to be an astronomer with a telescope. I'm glad we have a forum where we can learn about stuff like this. If I wasn't on this forum I probably never would have known anything about any supermoon.

Hmm... I just spoke with my bro who is an amateur astronomer and he said tonight would not be a good time to look at the moon with a telescope because the moon is full. He claims the best time to look at the moon is when the sun is hitting it from the side so the shadows are bigger. That makes sense I suppose. I'm going to look at it anyway just because it's a supermoon! Supermoons don't come along very often.

They're predicting a mostly cloudy night around here. Yet, I'm holding out hope of seeing it.

blogs.nasa.gov/cm/newui/blog/viewpostlist.jsp?blogname=moon_missions Stargazers are in for a big treat this weekend! On Mar. 19 the full moon will brighten the night sky as the biggest full moon seen in almost two decades. The moon will be at perigee, its closest point to Earth -- only 221,565 miles (356,575 km) away. The moon's orbit around Earth is not circular -- it's elliptical. One part of the orbit, the perigee, is closer to the Earth than the other, the apogee. The image is NOT to scale -- the eccentricity of the moon's orbit has been exaggerated. The last time the full moon coincided with an extreme perigee was Mar. 8, 1993 when it was a distance of 221,536 miles (356,528 km) from the Earth. This Saturday night, the moon will appear 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter in the sky than lesser full moons -- when the moon is farthest from the Earth. But to the casual observer, it may difficult to tell the difference. For the best viewing -- and dependent upon clear skies, of course-- look when the moon is near the horizon at sunset. The orbital geometry combined with the moon's location near the horizon, put in scale next to buildings and trees, will combine to produce an awesome sight. Full moon over space shuttle Endeavour in 2008. If you take some great images of this weekend's full moon, we'd love to feature them on the Marshall Space Flight Center Facebook page! www.facebook.com/nasa.marshall#!/nasamarshallcenter TO CONTINUE READING CLICK ON ABOVE LINK

I'm still waiting for the moon. The sun is just now starting to go down so it should be popping up at any moment. When it does, that sucker is mine. ;D
