OK. This is a minor event but it keeps happening every couple of months to me, in our living room.
First I want to say that I have a VERY GOOD sense of smell. I've described car engine smells to my mechanic who says, "Ahhh...you have a transmission fluid leak (smells like a hot candle). Or..."fresh oil dripping on the manifold - you have a seal leak."
In short, he believes me, checks it out and its quicker that way.
I'm also very fussy about how things taste. (Funny how some restaurant cooks don't seem to be...)
Anyway, that's my claim to having a reliably good nose.
So...the most recent event (2 nights ago) follow the usual way it goes.
I was sitting in the living room, with my husband (who has a terrible sense of smell as an ex smoker who smoked for 30 years or more). We're watching TV, its an absolutely uneventful moment, and all of a sudden I strongly smell cigarette smoke. Not the stale smoke smell that lingered in the house I lived in as a child. But the fresh exhale of a cigarette close to me. Like people USED TO smoke in their living rooms without concern for other people (who also weren't concerned unless they happened to hate it, like I did). I know all about cigarettes and how they smell...I briefly smoked a couple a day at around age 18. I know what it tastes to kiss a smoker, to wake in the morning after being out at an event and immediately smell my own hair and also the clothes piled in the corner.
What I smelled was not woodsmoke wafting in from somewhere. It was not an electrical short in the walls nor someone burning junk in a back yard. My neighbors don't do that, and its illegal in the city limits, and its unlikely at 10pm.
Terry of course smells nothing. This latest experience, it was so strong it made me nauseaous. No Terry hasn't started smoking on the sly. I'd be onto him in a moment.
I dutifully went all around the house sniffing in each room. Nothing. I went outside, front and back. Nothing. I came back to the living room - fading to nothing.
Just like always - its happened about 4 times now. Due to Terry's lack of witnessing anything, I'm left with what is for me.
I think someone who lived in the house, used to smoke. Then they died. Maybe in the house. It's been around since the early 70's. Somebody built a very funky bar with fake stone in the basement. Terry ripped it out when they moved in, the fake rock is now outside in my garden. Maybe that guy. Now he comes back, sits in the living room, and has a cigarette sometimes. Whether the thumping and bumping we hear at night is related - don't know. I don't smell cigarette smoke at night (Thank Goddess - that would be alarming). This is just...irritating.
