Yesterday I was happily being ALONE in my house - doing various projects with husband at work - no questions, no bad TV turned up loud. Ahhhhhh.
I went downstairs and started polishing some rocks on the Genie (polishing unit). OVER THE SOUND OF THE MOTOR (which is fairly loud) I heard footsteps overhead (the area of our living room). I assumed that husband was home and happily yelled - Hi Terry! I'm downstairs.
The footfalls stopped but no answering yell. (This is how we often greet each other). So I yelled again. Again total silence.
I suddenly wondered if someone had entered our house (front door was unlocked and was upstairs). I went up the stairs and OUT THE THE FRONT DOOR. My reasoning was if someone had come in thinking no was home and someone WAS home, they would leave.
I stood in the rain and talked to my old deaf neighbor. I didn't have the heart to ask him to come in and meet an armed assailant (you know the movies where the guy takes a knife out of the block in the kitchen - well we have a blockful of sharp knives in ours).
After about 10 minutes I was cold and mad and went inside. I thumped and talked loud and LOOKED IN EVERY ROOM AND CLOSET. Nothing. Even later I thought - well my purse is still here - Ah but are the credit cards still in it. They were.
I would say that this house is "neutral". I have lived in a house built in 1903 and it had ghost or poltergeist activies and I wasn't the only one who thought so. This is a box house built in around 75. No one has (probably) been born here or died here. (We don't do that in our houses anymore - in this part of the world).
I donno. I'm keeping the door locked when I'm home alone - at least for awhile...

Paulette, this very same thing happened to my husband a couple years ago. He was downstairs working in his office, and I was out of the house running errands with the kids. While he was down there, he heard footsteps walk from the laundry room (off of the garage) through the house and into our bedroom. He figured I came home. When he didn't hear footstep come back out of the room, he came to investigate. When he didn't find me, the thought a possible break in and looked in every room. Again there was nothing. At that point he said he went outside looking around, and wondering what just happened.

Creepy... might be the Men In Black.
Or just a friendly ghost.
;D
They'd better not come into my house. We have three loaded guns in different strategic locations... and I know how to use them. ~smirk~

I haven't talked much about ghosts in here because my jury is still out on them. I have this nagging feeling that they aren't dead folks who haven't moved on..I think they might be 'slip through's' from other dimensions close to ours. Maybe some of those parallel dimensions aren't so chummy and we get poltergeist activity while maybe others are just on walk about looking around. Other dimensions might have figured out how to move between and maybe some of us have also by accident..and just haven't found the route back. If you believe in a hereafter..then it's hard to imagine those running it not going out of their way to help stragglers. I imagine that waking up dead is a shock to everyone but there are said to be guides waiting (stories written by those who have died and lived to tell about it). On the other hand..they make for great campfire stories

Maybe heaven is a different diminsion. Ghosts have to come from somewhere. maybe there is a diminsion in between heaven and earth and that's where they come from. Maybe they got stuck in between.

O-Kay...but do they have to clomp around in my living room?

I suppose it's possible that a ghost could clomp around in a living room if they were somehow able to manifest themselves physically, but I doubt that they would stop clomping just because you yelled at them. Sounds like it might have been a burglar to me. He might have stopped clomping and started sneaking out when he heard you yell. Anything is possible.

Jo. I stand with you on the issue of Ghost.. I know many see them, but is it really a love one at the moment doing exactly what the witness sees? I use to ponder the idea, they are seeing a re enactment of the pass. The person goes into the pass somehow. If some see visons of the future why not the pass?

My own brothes claim to see them in the house we grew up in.. I never did, but did hear a noise in my bedroom walls all the time. My Mother said it as squirrels. I never believed her. I know birds can get caught in your walls . very creepy. the flutter till they die.

They like to make nests in the insulation because it's nice and warm. ~shrug~

Ghosts clomp around in living rooms all of the time if the house is haunted. They go up and down stairs a lot too. Have you ever heard any strange clomping sounds in this house before Paulette?

Not quite this dramatic. I was absolutely sure that my husband was home and walking over my head. Apparently not. If it was a bodied somebody - he or she had to know that someone was in the house running loud equipment (a rock grinder). Usually people running power tools are men (not always I realize) and why would they be loud if real and 1. wanting to steal something 2. wanting to hurt someone (and then not do it). I lived in a "loud" psychically speaking house before and I would say that this house is "neutral" - but there have been various scuffling and maybe even a cough or something being run into in the basement (which is cluttered). I don't see ghosts running into things - they go THROUGH them don't they???

well....i didn't want to bring this up....as of right now i'm having a problem in my home....and its been going on for a few weeks now.... i have a dish towel that hangs in the middle of the handle on my stove... it is more for decoration than use.... lately whenever i go into the kitchen the dish towel is pushed to the left hand side of the handle.....( the handle is approx. 22 in. wide) it is scrunched in the corner of the handle..... i know that doesn't sound strange....except i am anal about things being in their right place.... i hate things being out of place.... this has been happening once and twice a day.... at first i thought i moved it and forgot....i have tried to recreate it by moving around my kitchen ...but it just sits there..... this is a real mystery right now....and its starting to freak me out a little bit.... i have also been seeing ( more than usual) blue lights out of the corner of my eye and disturbed air....( if that makes sense) i do see these things occasionally, but the last few weeks i'm seeing it more and more.... i am alone in the house when it happens....

I'd rather have ghosts than people who might be sneaking into my house and walking around not caring if I heard them or not!!!

I have a few questions for you, Paulette. (I'm switching into investigator mode now because this is fun. I can see why Steve likes Sherlock Holmes so much. 1. How fast were the footsteps that you heard? Did they sound faster or slower than a person normally walking, or about the same? 2. What kind of house do you live in? (Brick, wood, rock, log cabin, etc...) 3. Have you ever heard footsteps or noises like this before in this house? Any clunking or thumping noises late at night? 4. What time did this incident occur?

1. They sounded like someone (adult weight) strolling across the living room and stopping. Like when Terry husband crosses the floor and sits in his chair. (I had no alarm at the sound - I was sure it was him.)
2. We live in a wood frame house with cement floored basement. Sound travels well from the upstairs to the downstairs. (we can't talk to each other but can hear the sound of a voice)..
3. I have heard various little creakings and such - mostly at night and husband is sure it the the heater ducts cooling or cats or racoons in the car port. The freezer makes a little cough noise when it starts up. But I have heard things that don't seem to fit into these catagories.
4. About 3:15 pm - about the time husband would come home from work but a little early.
