Why Are Aliens Here?
August 3, 2018
Why are space aliens here, anyway?
Many people think the aliens are here to help us, or to study us, or to learn from us. But is this naïve thinking? Consider, for example, why you go to the grocery store or the auto shop. Isn’t it because you want something (like food, or an oil change)?
If we humans go places because we want something, why would we expect aliens to be any different? Could it be that aliens are coming here to Earth because they want something from this place?
Earth is a beautiful planet inhabited by thousands of species of plants and animals. If you consider other planets in our solar system–Mars, Uranus, Neptune–it is clear that not every planet is endowed with such a rich tapestry of life. And what about worlds beyond our solar system, worlds where intelligent alien life has been seeded or evolved? Indeed, these alien planets may also be more barren than Earth.
If intelligent alien life developed on a barren planet like Mars or Neptune, can you see why they might be interested in obtaining plant and animal samples from a place like Earth that is abundant with biodiversity? These samples could be used to develop food sources or even seed plant life on more barren planets where these things don’t exist.
It’s natural for us humans to think we are the center of the universe and that any aliens coming to visit must be primarily interested in us and our civilization. But when you step back and realize that humanity is but one race in a universe full of different races and species, it’s easy to see that aliens might not consider us humans to be all that valuable compared to the mineral and biological resources that Earth has to offer.
Of course human beings do have one unique trait among Earthly life, and that’s the fact that we control this place. We are the dominant lifeform here. That gives us a certain importance that aliens must recognize even if we perhaps have less intrinsic value to them than other resources here.
And what are we doing as the dominant species here? Is it possible that we’re causing enough damage to the biosphere that the plants and animals aliens value may not be available in the future? If so, how might the aliens view us?
Are we destroying something that aliens value with our reckless abuse of the natural environment, and could that explain why alien abductees sometimes return and report receiving messages about how we need to take care better care of the Earth?
Maybe the aliens are right, and we should try to have more respect for our natural environment. Maybe we should be planting new trees instead of cutting them down!
