I was just doing some research for a book that I'm working on and stumbled across a site that lists several accounts of living Wooly Mammoths in Alaska and Siberia as late as the late 1880s. According to historical accounts of the time there were "thousands" of skeletons of the creatures scattered all over the area and people used to go around gathering the tusks in order to sell them on the ivory market. They also claim that several living animals were also roaming around and they were killed by the locals who also sold their tusks. It's an interesting idea that they might have existed so recently. I know there was an island where a herd of dwarf mammoths lived as recently as 2000 years ago so why couldn't the larger ones have also survived? I've always suspected they didn't die out at the end of the ice age because there wasn't any reason for them to die...unless they were wiped out by people.
