As administrator of The Edge of Reality forum I feel it is my duty to keep people updated on the latest UFO/paranormal movies and so I forced myself to go watch Steven Spielberg's new alien movie Super 8 last night. Actually I didn't have to twist my arm too much it since I really did want to watch the movie, I just would have preferred to see it at some time other than Ten O'clock at night, which was the earliest showing I was able to attend.
Super 8 takes place in a small midwestern town during the summer of 1979 and the plot basically revolves around a group of kids who are filming their own 8mm movie when a huge train crash derails their plans. An alien monster is let loose on the town and the intrepid youths end up on a wild roller coaster ride of an adventure as they try to stop it's destructive rampage. The story naturally builds up to an emotionally charged climax that is sure to move the hearts of sci-fi fans of all ages.
Imagine ET meets Jurassic Park, then gets attacked by Jaws, transformed by the Transformers and shot all to heck by Private Ryan. Imagine every movie Spielberg has ever made rolled into one and you have Super 8. It was a love story, a monster movie, a science-fiction, action-adventure kid's movie. It was...well, in a word...Spielberg. If you like his movies then you will like this one.
This is especially true if you like his later movies. There was a huge amount of CGI special effects with things exploding and flying all over the place in a whirlwind of technologically-generated excitement. Kind of like the Transformers on steroids.
The acting was typical Spielbergian acting and the kids were typical Spielbergian kids. None of them really stood out as Emmy Award-winning best actor material, although Elle Fanning did give a wonderful performance as a coming of age love interest. In my opinion she brought a depth of emotion to the film that all of the other actors combined could scarcely match. That includes the star of the show, young actor Joel Courtney who for some reason reminded me of Frodo in The Lord of the Rings. That's probably because Joel and Ring's star Elijah Wood look very similar to one another.
Over all I would say that this was a typical Spielberg movie with all of the normal bells and whistles. While he did not actually direct it, as producer his magical movie-making touch is everywhere. I definitely would recommend watching it, just be aware that there is not much "alien" in this alien movie. It was more like a T-Rex stomping around in a small, suburban neighborhood...a long time ago in a town not so far away...
