NASA MEDIA ADVISORY: M12-024 NASA TV to Broadcast Space Station Spacewalk Feb. 16 HOUSTON -- Two cosmonauts will conduct a six-hour spacewalk Thursday, Feb. 16, to continue outfitting the International Space Station. NASA Television will broadcast the spacewalk beginning at 7:45 a.m. CST. Expedition 30 Russian Flight Engineers Oleg Kononenko and Anton Shkaplerov will move one of the two Strela cranes from the Pirs docking compartment to begin preparing for its replacement next year with a new laboratory and docking module. The 46-foot crane will be relocated to the Poisk module for future assembly and maintenance work. The duo also will install five debris shields on the Zvezda service module and, if time permits, a small experiment on the forward section of the module, an experiment sample pack on Poisk and support struts on the Pirs ladder. Both spacewalkers will wear Russian Orlan suits bearing blue stripes and equipped with NASA helmet cameras. They will emerge from the Pirs airlock at about 8:15 a.m. This spacewalk will be the 162nd in support of space station assembly and maintenance. The last spacewalk occurred Aug. 3, 2011. For Kononenko, it will be his third spacewalk following two in July 2008 during Expedition 17. His two previous spacewalks lasted a total of 12 hours and 12 minutes. It will be Shkaplerov's first spacewalk and the only one scheduled during Expedition 30. Because of the location of the activities, Expedition 30 Commander Dan Burbank of NASA and Russian Flight Engineer Anatoly Ivanishin will be isolated in their Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft, which is attached to the Poisk module, for the duration of the spacewalk. NASA Flight Engineer Don Pettit of NASA and European Space Agency Flight Engineer Andre Kuipers will be free to move about the U.S. segment of the complex. Their Soyuz TMA-03M is attached to the Rassvet module. www.nasa.gov/centers/jpl/news/insight20120228.html Mission News Proposed Mars Mission Has New Name PASADENA, Calif. - A proposed Discovery mission concept led by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., to investigate the formation and evolution of terrestrial planets by studying the deep interior of Mars now has a new name, InSight. InSight stands for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport and is a partnership involving JPL, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, the French Space Agency (CNES), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and other NASA centers. The previous name for the proposal was GEMS (GEophysical Monitoring Station). NASA requested that name be reserved for an astrophysics mission known as the Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small Explorer, which was already in development. "We chose the name InSight because we would literally peer into the interior of Mars to map out its structure," said JPL's Bruce Banerdt, the principal investigator. "With our geophysical instruments we will be able to see right through to the center of Mars, and will be able to map out how deeply the crust extends as well as the size of the core." InSight is one of three missions vying to be selected for flight in the Discovery Program, a series of NASA missions to understand the solar system by exploring planets, moons, and small bodies such as comets and asteroids. All three mission teams are required to submit concept study reports to NASA on March 19. For more information, visit insight.jpl.nasa.gov/ . If the government can't even stop hackers from hacking into their own computer systems what makes them think they should have total control over the entire internet? Report: Hackers seized control of NASA computersBy Dan Merica Hackers targeting sensitive NASA computers have gained access to employee credentials and taken control of systems at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, among other things, a federal report says.
The space agency's inspector general, Paul K. Martin, cited one case involving hackers with IP addresses in China. In that case, intruders gained "full system access" to change or delete sensitive files and user accounts for "mission-critical" systems at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he said in a report issued this week."In other words," Martin said, "the attackers had full functional control over these networks."Read more... security.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/02/report-hackers-seized-control-of-nasa-computers/

abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/suit-nasa-specialist-axed-intelligent-design-15902624Suit: NASA Specialist Axed Over Intelligent DesignBy GILLIAN FLACCUS Associated Press. LOS ANGELES March 12, 2012 (AP) A computer specialist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is going to court over allegations that he was wrongfully terminated because of his belief in intelligent design. Openings statements in the lawsuit by David Coppedge were expected Monday afternoon in Los Angeles Superior Court. Coppedge, who worked as a team lead on the Cassini mission exploring Saturn and its many moons, claims he was discriminated against because he engaged his co-workers in conversations about intelligent design and handed out DVDs on the idea while at work. Intelligent design is the belief that a higher power must have had a hand in creation because life is too complex to have developed through evolution alone. Coppedge lost his team lead title in 2009 and was let go last year after 15 years on the mission. In an emailed statement, JPL dismissed Coppedge's claims. In court papers, lawyers for the California Institute of Technology, which manages JPL for NASA, said Coppedge received a written warning because his co-workers complained of harassment. Yes, to be sure, Neil is talking here about the space program. However, I am convinced the issues he identifies have a much broader impact on us as a country, us as a civilization, and the planet as a whole. The points he makes are frightening. Where are the scientists of tomorrow? Where is the fervor? Where is the commitment, the priority?
Many wonder why I am so pessimistic about our country and our civilization. We used to be a "show me the way; let's get it done" society. Now our priorities are all about entitlement and "what can YOU do for ME?"!
It is a sad thing to say, but our main hope may be that China's space and exploration programs flourish, so that we, once again, develop that fear of competition and being over-taken.....

Swamprat, I sadly agree with you, especially in the context of NASA. I remember the days of them pushing the envelope and seeing how far man could go. As you said, what happened to that drive? They are a shell of the organization they use to be. they have been sucked dry by narrow minded politicians. I don't much care to see us become space superior again. Collaboration could be a good thing, but I would like to see us TRY. One of the most memorable days of my life was when I visited the Johnson Space Center. I was by myself with a crowd of strangers, and I didn't care. I stood and marveled at the Satern 5 rocket and thinking of all the things they did with something so simple (relative to today's technology). Then seeing Appolo control center and thinking of the scenes from Appolo 13. You truly get a sense of what those men were up against, and yet they prevailed. Amazing.

I think that is probably why they keep cutting the funding for NASA. Why give money to a civilian space agency when they can just have the military do it in secre? There is no telling what they are now doing in space without anybody's knowledge.

Ex-NASA scientist, MIT grad gets 13 years in prison for espionage, fraud
Stewart Nozette defrauded the Navy Research Lab, DARPA and NASABy Layer 8 on Wed, 03/21/12 Ex-NASA worker, planetary scientist and physicist, Stewart Nozette was today sentenced to 13 years in prison for attempted espionage, conspiracy to defraud the United States and tax evasion. According to the Department of Justice the sentence covered charges in two cases. In the first, Nozette pleaded guilty in September 2011 to attempted espionage for providing classified information to a person he believed to be an Israeli intelligence officer. In the other, he pleaded guilty in January 2009 to fraud and tax charges stemming from more than $265,000 in false claims he submitted to the government. In addition to the prison term, Nozette is expected to pay more than $217,000 in restitution to the government agencies he defrauded. According to the DoJ, Nozette had an impressive resume that included: • A Ph.D. in Planetary Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 • A stint at the White House on the National Space Council, Executive Office of the President, from approximately 1989 through 1990. • A stint as a physicist for the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from approximately 1990 to 1999, where he designed highly advanced technology. • Assisted in the development of the Clementine bi-static radar experiment which purportedly discovered water ice on the south pole of the moon. A version of the Clementine satellite currently hangs on display at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and was later hailed as the vanguard of the new "faster, cheaper, better" revolution in space exploration. • Nozette performed some of this research and development at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in Arlington, Va., and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. www.networkworld.com/community/blog/ex-nasa-scientist-mit-grad-gets-13-years-prison-espionage-fraud

The guy probably could have gotten away with the espionage and fraud, but the tax evasion is what got him. When Obama saw that somebody wasn't paying as much money as they should have been he probably went berserk...after all, that money could have paid for one of his wife's vacations, or maybe even for a few rounds of golf for himself. The government can't have somebody not paying their fair share and cutting into the President's valuable leisure time.

Some of those moments will be revealed Tuesday night on the Science Channel's "NASA's Unexplained Files," the final episode of its month-long "Are We Alone?" series. Spanning the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and space shuttle programs, astronauts saw unusual lights and objects, some considered unidentified flying objects or UFOs. Through astronaut interviews and comments from leading scientists, "NASA's Unexplained Files" raises a question about the things they photographed: Is this proof of extraterrestrial life or simply misidentifications of "normal" objects? One case goes back to June 3, 1965, during the Gemini IV mission when Ed White performed the first space walk by an American. At one point during the flight, command pilot Jim McDivitt, pictured at right, spotted an unusual object in space. "At the time that I saw it, I said there was something out in front of me or outside the spacecraft that I couldn't identify, and I never have been able to identify it, and I don't think anybody ever will," McDivitt said back in 1975. "We were in drifting flight and my partner, Ed White, was asleep. I couldn't see anything out in front of me except just the black sky. And as it was rotating around, I noticed something out in front that was a white cylindrical shape with a white pole sticking out of one corner of it -- it [looked like] a beer can with a smooth pencil sticking out." McDivitt wasn't able to tell how close the object was or its size because depth perception in space isn't very good unless you know what the size of the object is that you're looking at. "I grabbed two cameras and took pictures of it," McDivitt continued. "As the sun shone on the window, I could no longer see out and the thing just disappeared. They checked annaD records to see what they had up on radar and there wasn't anything within very close range of us." After McDivitt and White landed in the Atlantic Ocean, the films were flown back to Houston, and McDivitt was less than satisfied with the results. Hi all! Just found this on my home website this morning: 'Fighter Satellites' Could Fend Off Asteroids'Satellite-operated lasers, not "Armageddon"-style bombs, could deflect asteroids headed for a catastrophic collision with Earth, Scottish scientists believe. Researchers at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow are floating the possibility that a flock of small satellites could fly in formation and fire solar-powered lasers at a threatening asteroid. Massimiliano Vasile, of Strathclyde's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, said his more subtle approach of using "a flotilla of small agile spacecraft" would eliminate the difficulties associated with other schemes that involve one large spacecraft attacking the asteroid. He admitted, though, that there would be some challenges in perfecting his proposed technique. "The use of high power lasers in space for civil and commercial applications is in its infancy and one of the main challenges is to have high power, high efficiency and high beam quality all at the same time," he said. "The additional problem with asteroid deflection is that when the laser begins to break down the surface of the object, the plume of gas and debris impinges the spacecraft and contaminates the laser." The likelihood of a humanity-threatening asteroid strike remains low, but astronomers have not pinned down the best way to deal with ones that pose a risk to our planet. After conducting what amounted to an asteroid census, Nasa astronomers estimated last year there are roughly 19,500 mid-size near-Earth asteroids. These have the potential to destroy a metropolitan area and orbit close to Earth. They also counted 981 large near-Earth asteroids - ones that are the size of a small mountain, at 3,300ft and larger, and would have global consequences if they were to slam into our planet. Link: web.orange.co.uk/article/news/fighter_satellites_could_fend_off_asteroidsCertainly an interesting proposition as an answer to the problem! My thoughts are: - What's already up there that we know nothing of (The 'Star Wars' programme) and what are their capabilities? As previously posted - what secrets do the military hold on such things and just how advanced are they??
- If the laser beam is going to be contaminated by dust - and it's just occurred to me that theoretically (to my mind anyway , not knowing too much about lasers !)should not have any impact on the laser as the beam should be stronger the closer the debris gets to the satellite and with the punch packing power that the lasers would require anyway, surely this would deal with the debris (And please feel free to blow my thoughts apart if I'm talking hogwash ;D ;D !)
- If the lasers' power does get reduced, wouldn't some kind of fairly conventional rocket/missile/explosive device be handy as a back up tool to try and deflect said asteroids??
Okay, that's enough rambling from me for now ;D ;D !!! TTFN! Take care, seek peace and SMILE! Charles

Back around the turn of the millenium I took my family to Kennedy Space Center in Florida which was quite an exciting adventure . There, NASA showed a few films to us among other things. One of these movies in IMAX showed what they would do in case an asteroid was to venture our way. Their solution : Send a satellite up and orbit the asteroid and use its minor gravitational influence to redirect its orbit . I thought "o.k., sounds like that will work". Then they showed another film about their future hopes of building a space station to house 10,000 people which is designed like a huge spinning wheel in space. From there,,,they would eventually build a double wheel structure to house 20,000 people. The problem : Water . Solution? : Capture a comet and bring it to the station outside earths orbit. Lol. Does anyone else see a problem with that besides me ?

Bezos says that F-1 rocket engines were found 14,000 feet below the surface using deep sea sonar, and he intends to raise at least one, maybe more, above sea level. The first-stage Apollo 11 engines that Bezos claims have been found helped lift Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins toward the moon in 1969, Scientific American reports. Bezos does not say how the team was able to prove their authenticity. The efforts to find the engines were privately funded by Bezos, and he says that the plan to bring them up would also be privately funded. He isn't the only tech founder interested in space, as Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has his own endeavors, including plans for a commercial spaceship. And this isn't the only deep-sea news of the week either, as film director James Cameron successfully emerged from his Mariana Trench dive. Bezos notes that the F-1 engines remain property of NASA, MSNBC reports, but he hopes at least one of the engines could be put into the Smithsonian and perhaps an additional one at the Museum of Flight in Amazon's hometown of Seattle. Here's how Bezos announced the news today: I'm excited to report that, using state-of-the-art deep sea sonar, the team has found the Apollo 11 engines lying 14,000 feet below the surface, and we're making plans to attempt to raise one or more of them from the ocean floor. We don't know yet what condition these engines might be in - they hit the ocean at high velocity and have been in salt water for more than 40 years. On the other hand, they're made of tough stuff, so we'll see. He ended his note with "We'll keep you posted" on the progress of bringing the engines up for the first time since they descended into the ocean. The Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 1969 (view video footage of the launch from near the base of the engines here). Moon dust from the mission was to be auctioned last year, but ultimately it was returned to NASA. www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2012/04/from-the-x-files-dept-nasas-alien-contact-scenario.htmlApril 10, 2012 From the 'X-Files' Dept: NASA's Alien Contact ScenarioExtraterrestrial beings monitoring Earth might view changes in our atmosphere as symptomatic of a a self-destructing civilization and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, according to a highly speculative scenario developed last year by scientists at NASA and Penn State University. Shawn Domagal-Goldman of NASA's Planetary Science Division and his colleagues developed scenarios that could unfold in the aftermath of a close encounter, to help humanity "prepare for actual contact". Their report, Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis, divides alien contacts into three broad categories: beneficial, neutral or harmful. Beneficial encounters ranged from the mere detection of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI), for example through the interception of alien broadcasts, to contact with cooperative organisms that help us advance our knowledge and solve global problems such as hunger, poverty and disease. Another beneficial outcome the authors entertain sees humanity triumph over a more powerful alien aggressor, or even being saved by a second group of ETs. "In these scenarios, humanity benefits not only from the major moral victory of having defeated a daunting rival, but also from the opportunity to reverse-engineer ETI technology," the authors write. Other kinds of close encounter may be less rewarding and leave much of human society feeling indifferent towards alien life. The extraterrestrials may be too different from us to communicate with usefully. They might invite humanity to join the "Galactic Club" only for the entry requirements to be too bureaucratic and tedious for humans to bother with. The most unappealing outcomes would arise if extraterrestrials caused harm to humanity, even if by accident. While aliens may arrive to eat, enslave or attack us, the report adds that people might also suffer from being physically crushed or by contracting diseases carried by the visitors. In especially unfortunate incidents, humanity could be wiped out when a more advanced civilisation accidentally unleashes an unfriendly artificial intelligence, or performs a catastrophic physics experiment that renders a portion of the galaxy uninhabitable. I find this part particularly interesting that they would "entertain"....Another beneficial outcome the authors entertain sees humanity triumph over a more powerful alien aggressor, or even being saved by a second group of ETs. "In these scenarios, humanity benefits not only from the major moral victory of having defeated a daunting rival, but also from the opportunity to reverse-engineer ETI technology," the authors write.
Especially since this is something being brought up here lately. I also find it interesting that they'd use words like "galactic club", reminds me of the Galactic Federation ... which btw, was around long before new ager's . It was first used in the mysterious telecast interruption by Vron or whatever the alien claimed his name was... Good find M! Very interesting. Is this newly released or newly created information?

I sort of feel that if ET's had any interest in aiding mankind they would have done so by now. They seem more inclined to observe or abduct, run tests and swipe samples. Galactic federations might seem like a great idea to us...but might have no basis in reality. If we (in our well meaning and self serving assumptions) put the face on them we would like for them to have..what the reality is might be more of a blow than if we remember how very 'alien' they might be. What are the odds they would think as we do..or see emotionally as we do or even see us in any equal measure. We might be something they would have in a petting zoo

That's the contention of a group of 49 former NASA scientists and astronauts. On March 28 the group sent a letter to NASA administrator Charles Bolden, Jr., blasting the agency for making unwarranted claims about the role of carbon dioxide in global warming, Business Insider reported. "We believe the claims by NASA and GISS [NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies], that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data," the group wrote. "With hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled." The group features some marquee names, including Michael F. Collins, Walter Cunningham and five other Apollo astronauts, as well as two former directors of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The letter included a request for NASA to refrain from mentioning CO2 as a cause of global warming in future press releases and websites. The agency's "Global Climate Change" webpage says that "Humans have increased atmospheric CO2 concentration by a third since the Industrial Revolution began. This is the most important long-lived "forcing" of climate change." NASA Scraps X-Ray Space Telescope Mission Over Rising Costsby Clara Moskowitz, SPACE.com Assistant Managing Editor Date: 07 June 2012 NASA is canceling all work on a new space telescope designed to seek out black holes and other cosmic mysteries through X-ray light due to soaring development costs, the space agency announced today (June 7). The mission, called Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small Explorer (GEMS), was running significantly over budget, said Paul Hertz, director of NASA's Astrophysics Division, during a phone call to reporters today. The mission team had almost completed the design stage of the project and was nearing the point where hardware for the mission would begin to be built. No working instruments were yet constructed, Hertz said. NASA recently commissioned an independent review of GEMS' budget, and found that the ultimate price tag for the spacecraft was likely to be 20 to 30 percent over budget. Because of the cost overrun, NASA decided to pull the plug on GEMS last month. On June 5, the GEMS team, led by principal investigator Jean Swank of the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., appealed the decision and submitted documents to show they had identified new areas of cost savings. However, NASA was not swayed. The space agency will now have to pay an estimated $13 million in close-out costs to cancel the mission, including contract cancelation fees to Orbital Sciences Corp. and other companies that were hired to built the spacecraft. GEMS was to use three telescopes to capture the bent X-ray light from extremely dense objects such as black holes, neutron stars and stellar remnants. The mission would have launched no earlier than 2014 and lasted two years. "The instrument technology was more difficult and took longer than they had originally estimated," Hertz said. "That delayed their ability to get started on the rest of their schedule." www.space.com/16048-nasa-cancels-xray-space-telescopes-gems.html

www.eutimes.net/2011/02/nasa-declares-possible-et-signal/NASA Declares Possible ET SignalPosted by EU Times on Feb 13th, 2011 No one knows for sure what caused this signal. There is a slight possibility that it just might originate from an extraterrestrial intelligence. The bright colors on the blue background indicate that an anomalous signal was received here on Earth by a radio telescope involved in a Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). An Anomalous SETI Signal. A search for these signals is ongoing by several groups including volunteer members of the SETI League. Time labels the vertical axis of the above plot, and frequency marks the horizontal axis. Although this strong signal was never positively identified, astronomers have identified in it many attributes characteristic of a more mundane and ultimately terrestrial origin. In this case, a leading possibility is that the signal originates from an unusual modulation between a GPS satellite and an unidentified Earth-based source. Many unusual signals from space remain unidentified. No signal has yet been strong enough or run long enough to be unambiguously identified as originating from an extraterrestrial intelligence. spacefellowship.com/news/art29669/nasa-takes-major-step-in-certifying-commercial-crew-transportation-systems.html NASA Takes Major Step in Certifying Commercial Crew Transportation SystemsPublished by Klaus Schmidt Tue Aug 14, 2012 via: NASA NASA recently provided new details about its plans for certifying commercially developed spacecraft and launch systems that could support future crewed missions to the International Space Station. “We’re spurring an industry capability to and from low Earth orbit and working to ensure the U.S. ends its reliance on foreign crew transportation to the space station,” said Ed Mango, program manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program (CCP). “We’ve decided now would be the best time to begin certification efforts to reduce the risk of technically challenging or costly redesigns to systems in the future.” Commercial Crew Program Manager Ed Mango, left, and Deputy Program Manager Brent Jett host a forum for the commercial spaceflight industry to introduce NASA's plans for certifying commercially developed spacecraft and launch systems in support of crewed missions to the International Space Station. Image credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett Through CCP, NASA is facilitating the development of a U.S. commercial crew space transportation capability with the goal of achieving safe, reliable and cost-effective access to and from the space station and low Earth orbit. After the capability is matured and expected to be available to the government and other customers, NASA could contract to purchase commercial services to meet its station crew transportation needs. NASA will take a two-phase approach to see that commercial missions are held to the same safety standards as government human space transportation system missions. Endeavour was moved from Orbiter Processing Facility 2 to the Vehicle Assembly Building where it will be housed temporarily until its targeted departure from Kennedy atop the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft in mid-September. After a stop at the Los Angeles International Airport, Endeavour will move in mid-October to the California Science Center for permanent public display. Now in the processing facility after leaving the Vehicle Assembly Building, shuttle Atlantis will undergo preparations for its move to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in November, with a grand opening planned for July 2013. (HD Footage) Restored Apollo 11 Moon Landing Video - via PRC media Uploaded by mrmovieman34 on Oct 9, 2010 Digitally remastered footage of the 1969 Apollo 11 moonwalk has been shown publicly for the first time..... some of which was found in Australia.... The video highlights of the three-hour moonwalk include a clearer picture of Neil Armstrong's descent down the stairs of the lunar module, which was taken from the Parkes Radio Observatory and the Honeysuckle Creek tracking station outside Canberra on 21 July 1969 (Australian time). The long-forgotten video footage was uncovered during a decade-long search for the original recordings of the moonwalk, and involved lengthy detective work and clandestine meetings, says astronomer and telescope operator John Sarkissian from the CSIRO at Parkes, who headed up the search..... At the time of the Moon landing, three stations - Goldstone in California, Honeysuckle Creek in Canberra, and Parkes in New South Wales - simultaneously recorded the events onto magnetic data tape. The direct recordings were not of broadcast quality, says John, so they had to set up a regular TV camera pointed at a small black-and-white TV screen in the observatory to obtain higher-quality images that could be relayed to television stations around the world. "Original signals weren't HD quality TV. They weren't even broadcast quality, even by 1969 standards," he says. "They were better than what was broadcast to the world; that's why we went looking for them...". The Goldstone camera settings to convert Neil's descent down the stairs were not correct and showed an image too dark to see. So the decision was made to switch to the Honeysuckle Creek footage, and after eight minutes, to the Parkes footage, which was used for the rest of the moonwalk. It was this clearer footage, which had not been seen since 1969, that John and his search team were hoping to recover from the NASA archives, where the tapes had been sent. Unfortunately, they hit a roadblock. "We discovered, to our horror, that in the 1970s and 80s NASA had taken the tapes in the national archive and erased them all to record other missions." About 250,000 tapes from the Apollo era, likely including the 45 tapes of the moonwalk, are likely lost forever.... After some digging, they found that in the 1980s someone made a VHS tape of the Honeysuckle Creek magnetic tape, "a bootleg copy if you like, that was severely degraded," John says. A copy of that copy was given to an Apollo enthusiast who was tracked down to Sydney by the search team. This footage included a brighter and clearer version of Apollo 11 mission commander Neil Armstrong's descent to the lunar surface and was used to replace the darker Goldstone images at the start of the broadcast. At the awards ceremony, select scenes from the entire restored video will show Neil's first step on the Moon's surface, Buzz Aldrin's decent of the lunar module ladder, the plaque reading and the raising of the US flag..... ... An Australian awards ceremony made history when it publicly screened digitally restored extracts of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon for the first time. Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, who walked on the moon, attended the Australian Geographic Society Awards in Sydney as guest of honour, and watched highlights of the re-mastered footage shown.
