www.newsweek.com/alternative-facts-conspiracy-theory-how-argue-652181?utm_campaign=NewsweekTwitter&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social From the Moon Landing to Donald Trump’s Alternative Facts—Why People Believe in Conspiracy TheoriesBy Mark Lorch 8/19/17 This article was originally published on The Conversation. Read the original article. I’m sitting on a train when a group of football fans streams on. Fresh from the game—their team has clearly won—they occupy the empty seats around me. One picks up a discarded newspaper and chuckles derisively as she reads about the latest “alternative facts” peddled by Donald Trump. The others soon chip in with their thoughts on the U.S. president’s fondness for conspiracy theories. The chatter quickly turns to other conspiracies, and I enjoy eavesdropping while the group brutally mock flat Earthers, chemtrails memes and Gwyneth Paltrow’s latest idea. Then there’s a lull in the conversation, and someone takes it as an opportunity to pipe in with, “That stuff might be nonsense, but don’t try and tell me you can trust everything the mainstream feeds us! Take the moon landings, they were obviously faked and not even very well. I read this blog the other day that pointed out there aren’t even stars in any of the pictures!” To my amazement the group joins in with other “evidence” supporting the moon landing hoax: inconsistent shadows in photographs, a fluttering flag when there’s no atmosphere on the moon, how Neil Armstrong was filmed walking onto the surface when no-one was there to hold the camera. A minute ago they seemed like rational people capable of assessing evidence and coming to a logical conclusion. But now things are taking a turn down crackpot alley. So I take a deep breath and decide to chip in. “Actually all that can be explained quite easily....” They turn to me, aghast that a stranger would dare to butt into their conversation. I continue undeterred, hitting them with a barrage of facts and rational explanations. “The flag didn’t flutter in the wind, it just moved as Buzz Aldrin planted it! Photos were taken during lunar daytime—and obviously you can’t see the stars during the day. The weird shadows are because of the very wide-angle lenses they used which distort the photos. And nobody took the footage of Neil descending the ladder. There was a camera mounted on the outside of the lunar module that filmed him making his giant leap. If that isn’t enough then the final clinching proof comes from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’s photos of the landing sites where you can clearly see the tracks that the astronauts made as they wandered around the surface.” "Nailed it!” I think to myself. But it appears my listeners are far from convinced. They turn on me, producing more and more ridiculous claims. Stanley Kubrick filmed the lot, key personnel have died in mysterious ways, and so on.... The train pulls up in a station. It isn’t my stop but I take the opportunity to make an exit anyway. As I sheepishly mind the gap, I wonder why my facts failed so badly to change their minds. The simple answer is that facts and rational arguments really aren’t very good at altering people’s beliefs. That’s because our rational brains are fitted with not-so-evolved evolutionary hard wiring. One of the reasons why conspiracy theories spring up with such regularity is due to our desire to impose structure on the world and incredible ability to recognize patterns. Indeed, a recent study showed a correlation between an individual’s need for structure and tendency to believe in a conspiracy theory. Take this sequence for example: CONTINUE READING: www.newsweek.com/alternative-facts-conspiracy-theory-how-argue-652181?utm_campaign=NewsweekTwitter&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social

I had the chance to read top secret police only files on a number of national known organizations and it was eye opening. It was a string of murder, corruption and open lies to the public I have learned that people do not believe me when I tell them the real truth on things and I have largely given up trying on some subjects. Keeping my eyes and ears open I have learned much. I have talked to a Fed who was at Ruby Ridge and at Waco and he told me alot about those events. All things said and done I believe some conspiracy theories are very mild compared to reality. The govt lies very well. people as a whole are well propaganized that they would believe that red is green except on Tuesday when red is black If it is in a top secret police file is it a theory or is it hard fact

people always find a way to try to take over and put themselves on top of the pile That is history. One lunatic in power can kill millions following his own self aggrandizing People follow like lemmings any smooth talking twit that comes along Promise people loot and glory while playing on their vanity and you have them.

Most people have an idea how they should act in society. They also know how they really act instead. Knowing the difference they know people are just like themselves and out only for themselves in reality. Thus a reasonable plot just might be reality in fact.

Just watched a news documentary (CBC) about the Kennedy assasination. Apparently some records are being released now; Trump is holding some back until 2018 for whatever reason. I had heard some of the details before but this was deeplyl researched, mainstream TV. In no particular order except my memory:
1. The gun that Lee Harvey Oswald was shooting was unable to shoot three bullets in the forensic time allotment. Also according to this, he was not an excellent marksmen while in the service. The records are there.
2. Therefore, it was assumed that he only shot two bullets, and that one of them pieced the President, his arm, the arm of the Governor of Texas and his wife. The expert on the documentary said one bullet would be massively deformed just going through the first body, never mind two more.
3. Lee Harvey Oswald had been followed by the FBI for years - to Mexico to talk the Russians, here and there. He was filmed entering the Russian Embassy in the USA. They seemed to leave him out there through neglect or even intent.
4. Lee Harvey Oswald was supposed to be kept safe until the trial. He was brought down an elevator with other people and faced a crowd at the bottom. A mobbed up man (Jack Ruby) shot him. There are many quotes attributed to him (Jack Ruby's quotes) but I couldn't transfer the image. Goggle Jack Ruby's quotes.
5. Various reports said Ruby died of cancer but also that he died of a pulmonary embolism. I'm no assassin, but all one needs to induce an embolism is a syringe filled with air.
Anywa--my point is: If something can be stuffed into the cuckoo conspiracy theory, people shy away from further investigation. Yes? I used to go to a UFO site from Australia - only policemen and emergency responders. Not a likely group to brag or elaborate on being chased down a road by something disk shaped above them. Or losing time. Or calling in panicked and reporting weird sh*t. I bet most of them don't have their jobs and retirement packages anymore. Ditto commercial pilots. So it goes. 5.

Yea...me again (Jo) in a different dress... I do get annoyed with conspiracy theories..some of them tragically stupid...the Sandy Hook horror comes to mind...to 'wash away' the tragedy of those children by calling it some staged incident for gun control is unforgivable...most especially to the parents of children who died. Had Kennedy died today...much more could have been done forensically. He also would have had better ammo and probably a better gun...and possibly the president might have lived with more modern medicine. It happened as history needed for it to..which I guess is always the case ....I wonder if there are hiccups when history doesn't to the way it really should...we do write our own paths...but not our own destiny I think. All roads to the same fast food stand in the end

Bismark put it best when he said taking away the idea of devine control of things then govt becomes a chance collection of laws and rules by which all wage war on all. Everyone advances their own interests over everyone else. realizing that we all advance our selves when every we can then it is easy to believe that others do the same. Thus when a person gets promoted over our self it is a dirty commie plot. Problem is that it is not paranoia when people really are plotting to advance themselves over your self. When groups are involved instead of individuals it is more dynamic and has more serious results. Look at how many public figures are promoting an attack on the President of the USA. Such things are high treason. the governor of Virginia said he would punch the president in the nose. It is a stupid thing to say. Reminds me of the Sumner Brooks affair prior to the civil war. it is a wonder that we survive as the country

Well I can't argue with that...most of humanity is very self serving....people go into politics as a job choice..a career..and a way to better their own lot. I think most governments are corrupt...while doing things in 'the best interest' of the huddled masses...they manage it with a lot of slight of hand maneuvering and manipulating. We alter with the party choice that becomes the current president...as that person makes the policies, sometimes just designed to mess around with their opponents..we bend..they bend us. Only because we're basically sheep to we survive as a country...knowing most others are far far worse.. As long as we have it fairly well...our modern electronic toys...our fancy cars...luxuries...we hang in there...now the lower class well heck...we have our dollar stores and woo hoo..at the end of the year...there's the tax refund when we catch up...or try to. We survive as a country because we don't know how to change the system we have.

I saw an old photo of building an air field in China during WWII. thousands of chinese carrying dirt and pulling rollers The caption said most of the people in the photo died during the air field construction I figured japanese bombing or something Nope they litterally did not pay a living wage. they died slowly of starvation and were easy to replace. Old Peking solved the homeless problem by having what they called the dying place out side the city where the poor could go and die problem solved. The powers that be did not care period. I have never seen so many homeless as are around today. The same attitude prevails as in china Jobs do not pay a living wage and rents are sky high do to Californians coming here to get away from that states taxes. The powers that be have a vision of glory and nothing will stand in the way of it. Cheap labor ia abundant and willing to work under the table. On the other hand people from Calif come here with large sums of money so rents go up. I ran a mission for street people for seven years until if closed due to alack interest so I have some idea of how things work

I have been in California all of my life. Always lower to middle class income...always made do. I have friends here who are millionaires and friends here who scrape to get by every month. What with the weather lately...I figure California is Bi-polar..one day in the high 70''s the next in the low 60's even two days of rain so far. Bi-polar...along with most of the residents.

I moved from Calif to Alaska after I got my Masters in Geology. Like the land you can look to the horizon and not another human between you and the farthest mtn. Too cold though minus 70 at five mile on the Yukon last winter I was up there. Came south to live in the mtns less chance land will kill you. I was told by high placed man in Calif govt that the calif I knew was dead and gone for ever it was better to leave if you can. I did and never regretted it. Traded Central Valley for fir trees, green grass, and flowing streams. Did see some UFOs in Alaska including one as big as a football field while i was working on the pipeline

I thought over all things were kind of dull if you dont count the greys and the apemen I have seen in the woods around my home I like being in the savage wild where probably no human has set foot before me. Too bad we are so primative in our space travel. All that out there and we sit stuck on this rock. You never know where a challenge shows up. Driving in the mother lode area of Calif I saw a huge snake along the road and stopped to shoot it. A giant rattle snake is a menace to kids. I could not find it but a few days later a 12ft 3in rattle snake was killed there People never think of them in trees Three friends were walking though some oak trees and something thunked on each ones cowboy hat. the last one happened to look up and it was a rattle snake. Over all i was lucky to survive childhood and the dumb things I did from cliff climbing to running up to bulls face to face and yelling boo at them Greys were just part of things,. Normal life They lived just over the hill top in front of my house and no big deal More interesting than the locals

Ah Randy we're probably stuck on this rock because we're just too rotten to be out there. Think of what we would take with us....murders and rapists and serial killers and just plain mean people...who would be much better quarantined here. Assuming they're good folk out there...if not...then they'll just come here to join the ongoing destruction of our world. We can't even take care of our own planet...we don't belong on another. We're greedy and mean and jealous and all the petty little emotions possible....with a very few honestly good people scattered here and there. We're safer staying here...for the other guy.

From experience greys are vain, self centered, short tempered and do not care if you die or not. Humans are expendable lab rats. they do not have any concept of individual rights. Humans can be noble and generous. I really would like to go to mars and see the rocks there. Set up on some planet as a new colony would be great.I like the wild areas of the desert and mtns. We as a people have been screwed by the govt into believing that you have to pay to live. Vast areas of the world are devoid of people and could be settled by those wanting freedom and no taxes. In the book noble house a Chinese rents peasants land he does not own and is free to settle. He said peasants feel secure when they pay rent so he was helping them feel secure. Freedom scares the peasants. Why do you pay rent or pay a mortgage it is expected of you from birth. You must work and pay rent to be part of our society You must pay taxes. Ever ask why

many times...I don't want to end up living under a bridge...sorry had kids to take care of. In this society, and most. There are rules to exist by or you're an outcast. I was a mom with 3 kids to raise and couldn't afford to ask those questions. Income tax was supposed to be temporary...like any tax ever is. You never own completely the property you have because you always pay taxes on it. We pay to exist...unless you drop out of society...and live on the streets. Most people don't want quite that 'iffy' an existence so they don't look too closely at why's

Need to eat.
Have to work to eat.
Not acceptable for some people to work for their food, and other people to get to eat without working......
Very simple. But somehow made “complicated”. _______________
Comparing this “system”, and the “greys”.
Do the “greys” need to eat.
What do the “greys” covet? (Seriously consider).
Does part of the “grey” arrogance come naturally, from living OUTSIDE our needed system.
From human perspective (only); Very simple. But somehow made complicated?

We can't even understand out own people...our thoughts and processes of thought are not the same..how can we understand a species when we've no idea of it's base morals how they are raised...how they breed...how their emotional make up is. We can observe...we can make comparisons..but even among ourselves..well look at the 'right' vs the 'left' now days..it's infantile how stupid this has become. It's like some blasted soap opera...FAKE NEWS...it's only fake news if you don't want to hear it...sheesh give me a break...humanity needs to grow up. Conspiracy theories...because people don't 'subscribe' to how something went down or if it did. Tell the poor moms of Sandy Hook that their children were not slaughtered or were for the sake of gun control. Or the recent school shooting...someone will get around to saying the FBI staged it for gun control sooner or later because that is how one faction thinks. No lunar landing...why? Tell that to the astronauts...oh that's right..they're in on it. If we don't like the answers...it's 'something else' it's a CONSPIRACY. To keep us from knowing the truth...someone has to be lying because we want it to me MORE...or our way. Well...there are a lot of truth's out there NO one has a clue of. What if like Elon Musk insists..we are in a Matrix? Scientists say it's possible. Who made us up OR is that idea nothing new...in that some of us have been praying to the grand master for a long time..it's perhaps just God's matrix after all. Nope too cold to live under a bridge.

I’m sticking with “ it’s a dog eat dog world”. 😉
We have to eat to have energy to do anything. Even to keep our bodies warm enough to briefly try that jaunt under the bridge.....
People that end up surviving on drugs and alcohol, and barely eating? I have no idea how that works; but science should- by now. It’s not normal. And those people have babies because that’s what humans do. After generations of this, how does this play into our children’s mental fitness?
On top of everything else going on, I’m still going to come back to it’s about what we eat.
_____________
Hmmmmm. USED to think... wilderness. (I’m talking America’s national parks 🙂). Fresh air. Fresh water. Hiking and relaxing (good exercise). Seeing nature (including mostly harmless animals- because animals were scared of humans and stayed away from us).
Dare you eat berries right off of a bush??
Kind of tired of living a “fear-based life”. Caution, yes. Don’t feed the bears type caution.

It's the world we've shaped for ourselves. Yes....berries off the vine..grapes...delicious. My brother in law hunted...but I'm not fond of wild meat...the gamey taste just isn't one I enjoy. Deer..Elk..those I've tried..pass. Were I starving I could get to enjoy road kill probably LOL. I live in the country...we raised our own beef..pork..chicken...all fine as long as you don't make friends with them. Still...I LIKE going to the store for my food...I LIKE my warm bed, my wind chimes, the music on my computer when I sleep. I like those things. I could change if I needed...I have often...but...I'm comfortable in my old age..far more blessed than many.

Warning: this is horrible. Very graphic from 2013.... perp is on trial this month.
My point with posting this: the drugs involved.
Why it’s on a “conspiracy thread” : the 2 main conspiracies that I have grown up with, are the “government” allowed or supplied a multitude of drugs into our country. And the “government” released a certain virus into the population.
Again, THIS addresses the issue of brain damage. The use of drugs does not make “docile” people. There are a lot of issues here; including lack of “impulse” control.
After saying all that, this is STILL VERY DIFFICULT to post. I just cannot fathom that people ignore the problem.

There is a rumor...has been for so many years that the CIA sponsored drugs during Viet Nam to our servicemen. Drugs were easy to get there...cocaine..heroin...marijuana naturally although I don't consider that a drug. Allegedly the drugs financed the war and I don't find that too hard to believe. The issue with drugs and alcohol is the person's choice to use them. I don't believe the government has been 'seeding' drugs in the water or by air. That's just another of the crazy conspiracy theories. People see jet trails and think we're being crop dusted. Trust issues...wanting to blame things as they are on anyone..everyone. Like all the shootings. Well every darn day, some nut does pick up a gun and shoot someone. Guns ARE easy. There is no other country in the world that has our problem. This entitled country of people can afford, do afford and then use all kinds of weapons. You can't afford a gun if you're worried about starving evidently. But here we are. We have our constitutional right to bear arms but I think...that not only comes with a horrible price tag..it does need more regulation. No one under 21. Psych evaluation...strong background test that is followed through on..and stricter enforcement laws of those regulations. It won't stop it...nothing will.. Lady who killed her two children 22 and 26 I think it was, her husband and herself..probably wouldn't have used a knife...or a bow and arrow or a club...one of them might have lived..but she had a gun..or he did. There ARE a lot of mentally unstable people out there...you can feel it..the chaos and confusion of people. So there will be more. Lots more. Probably more situations like Waco too..'law man ain't gonna git ma guns'...wouldn't surprise me at all.
Suspicious Minds.
