Awhile back (here) I posted about smelling cigarette smoke in my living room. It was troubling but faint enough to be tolerable. It waxed, waned, and then disappeared. I did have a thought about my mother. She used to stay up in the living room and drink and smoke cigarettes. But I didn't give this much thought. She died a long time ago (32 years?)and seemingly not from smoking.
Three or four nights ago I was in the living room and STRONGLY smelled exaust. Like being in a garage with a running engine. Scary.
I had a faint thought - did someone die like this? Smelling this? I actually felt sick.
Now the science part: It didn't smell like that outside my house - in any direction There were no running engines in ear range I could almost taste it for about an hour. However I only smelled it in the living room. Strokes can cause things like this - usually the smell lingers - sometimes forever. It doesn't clear in an hour. It can be the beginning of a migraine. Although I felt nauseated while I smelled it, nothing further developed. I had experienced extremely accurate smelling abilities during a migraine. I'm taking the same meds. No reason to think it was them.
So it goes. I'm not big on ghosts - I've been visited by friends but never random smokers or people suiciding in their garages.

I recall smelling something “nasty” (a few times; while working in the yard). Can’t describe the smell- other than really bad B.O.). I knew it was NOT similar to skunk because the smell did NOT hang around all evening- like skunk smell does.
It didn’t register until much later that I could be smelling something “paranormal”. 🙂
If I had an “unusual smell” in my house, my mom would smell it also. And I would have to investigate it until I had a “decent” answer for her. 🤗 (this has obviously happened a few times). 🙄😉 Seemed like this “happens” initially when we first turn on the heat in the Fall.

(NOT saying that your “exhaust smell” has anything to do with turning on your furnace). You know the difference.

We have electric heat and have not used it since last spring.

Smells are funny. They tend to seep into wood and course materials especially tobacco smoke. When moisture is in the air it can transport smells in a way that makes it possible for us to pick up on them. Could be that your mother smoked there in the living room and conditions were right for you to smell it. As for the smell of carbon of any kind I would check anything in my house that ran off of gas and make sure things are working properly. Could be a mixture problem especially if there is a strong burnt sulfur smell. Those are the most logical explainations. Not saying there isn't something paranormal, just check easy stuff first.

That's what I was thinking also, especially with the cigarette smoke. Don't know if anybody smoked in your house though.

NO. My mother smoked in our house in Texas. It did reek of cigarette smoke.
