www.theufochronicles.com/2011/07/state-of-new-hampshire-erects.htmlFriday, July 22, 2011 State of New Hampshire Erects Historical Marker for Betty and Barney Hill By Kathleen Marden www.kathleen-marden.com7-21-11 Kathy Marden Many states might shy away from immortalizing its UFO history. But the State of New Hampshire is known for its fiercely independent people and its “live free or die” motto. On July 20, 2011, it erected a historical marker to commemorate the September 19-20, 1961 close encounter and “lost” time of Portsmouth residents Betty and Barney Hill. The marker is located next to the highway in front of Cabin # 20 at the Indian Head Resort in North Lincoln and across the street from the granite stone face called Indian Head. Several years ago, Mike Stevens, a Farmington, NH, man circulated a petition to request a marker to commemorate Betty and Barney Hills’ UFO experience. The State of NH Division of Historical Resources, Department of Cultural Resources advised him that a formal request would be required. I, as the Hills’ niece and trustee of Betty’s estate, then worked with the state over the next 3-4 years to complete the process. Employees at the Department of Cultural Resources called upon me to suggest appropriate text for the marker—a challenge in and of itself. Every statement had to be footnoted and supported by ample evidence that it was true and accurate. In all, the wording for the 12 line plaque had 20 footnotes and 28 sources listed in its bibliography. The final wording approved by the state agency reads as follows:
On the night of September 19-20, 1961, Portsmouth, NH couple Betty and Barney Hill experienced a close encounter with an unidentified flying object and two hours of “lost” time while driving south on Rte 3 near Lincoln. They filed an official Air Force Project Blue Book report of a brightly-lit cigar-shaped craft the next day, but were not public with their story until it was leaked in the Boston Traveler in 1965. This was the first widely-reported UFO abduction report in the United States. CONTINUE READING: www.theufochronicles.com/2011/07/state-of-new-hampshire-erects.html

It is kind of cool that something about UFOs is finally getting some official recognition, and they even did it in a serious manner. Most people probably would have just put up a cardboard sign showing a little green cartoon Martian with a tinfoil hat on his head. Congratulations to the state of New Hampshire for being open-minded.

A funny story. In 1980, a GF I had then in California - before I met my wife a year later (married 27 years now), invited me to visit her parents that lived in Redding, Massachusetts. She planned visiting her parents and attend a Nurse's proficiency training program - she could write off the trip then on her taxes. She asked if I wanted to come along. Sure, nice way to have a vacation and see New England. Her family seemed nice, they showed me around all over New England. Boston, Gloucester, Harvard, Historical points of interest..and......the White Mountains around Indian Head to enjoy the 'fall colors'. We drove around on the same route the Hills did years earlier. I was delighted - knowing the Hills account already. I told her family about the event, mentioning the Hills and their experience, as we drove along knowing this is where it all had happened. After the drive home, later that evening...I was summoned down to talk with her mom. I thought....oh geeeze.... they are conservitive...they probably did not like the fact their daughter's BF had a interest (just a mild affliction then ;D ) in UFO's. The mom was upset.... but it wasn't about the UFO's...but the fact I had no problem with interracial couples or interracial marriage. The mom was upset about that (it wasn't racially 'pure' - yup...thats what she said....) Wow! A few days later we flew back to California and she promptly broke up with me as per her mom's instructions it seems! Oh well! Can you believe that? Anyway, it was nice to see where the Hill's experience more or less all happened. Apparently little gray aliens - not a problem..... but blacks! OMG! Isn't that funny. Her loss, my gain! ;D Years later spoke at some length with Betty Hill, but never mentioned the story above. We had much more important things to discuss. Steve

Steve: You actually spoke to Mrs. Hill? Really? Wow... that's soo cool! Yup, nice lady. She was very accommodating to a relative stranger, but we hit it off. Seems my wife's mom was from Boston too, so we joked about accents sharing about me so she did not feel at a disadvantage. Several interesting things from that discussion. I think Betty had several more visitations after her 1961 experience in her Portsmouth, NH home she was not ever willing to accept. I mentioned this later to her niece Kathleen Marden, who independently had already come to the same conclusion. Betty was very much a home body in retirement, with her cats. I think for her, Betty's home - the same one she lived in with Barney in 1961...was her fortress of solitude sort of speak. In her mind, she was safe there from the phenomenon. Kathleen suspects there were more visitations, even when she was near death. The Hill's weeks after their UFO encounter for a time traveled every free weekend trying to retrace they're steps, disturbed they could not account for their two missing hours. Marden shared with me before her book 'Captured' had found a publisher...(this account is in the book) what few knew was that Betty reported having lost her earrings during the trip home from Indian head with Barney during their famous experience. A number of weeks past. After returning home from one of their trips retracing their steps....... the couple walked into their home.... and there conspicuously on their polished dinning room table - carefully folded was a enigmatic pile of leaves in the middle of their table. They opened the leaves..... and there inside were her missing earrings....returned. Steve

It wouldn't surprise me that they both had other visits following their first experience. That seems to be pretty common among abductees. They don't just zap people once and then leave.
I wonder if Travis Walton ever had any follow-up experiences?
I also think it is kind of cool that you spoke with Betty Hill. She is practically a legend in UFO circles. Pretty soon there is not going to be many of the early UFO pioneers left. Once people like Betty, Barney and Travis die they take all of the personal knowledge about their encounters with them. There are probably a lot of things that happened to Betty and Barney that we will never know. That first incident may have just been the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks Sky, anna,
I thought it was pretty cool too talking with Betty. It wasn't difficult. I read Betty lived in the same house all those years in Portsmouth, NH. This light came on in me, and I wondered. I looked her up on the Internet White pages, and she was there, address, phone number, plain as day. I still have her address and phone number in my files. I don't share it only in case someone ever decided to make it some kind of weird UFO shrine, upsetting the nice residence that maybe living there now. There could be a Walmart there now for all I know.
I thought about it for several days, and took a chance. I was looking for some kind of validation I told her about her experience, and wanted to contribute more to studying the phenomenon. She gave me some advice and we had a very long talk about UFO's and her experience. She was very nice and patient considering she had probably been asked many of the same questions since her story publicly broke decades before.
In my initial call introduction... I asked..."is this the Hill residence?.....(YES).......is this the same Bett....(before I could complete the senstence....Yes). Some laughter...and it moved on from there.
There was some strange paranormal activity around Betty's home a few weeks before Betty passed away, if I am not mistaken. Some things to suggest Betty was visited in her home.... paying respects? Marden related in that tone if I am correct.
Betty visited Barney's grave site shortly after his passing from his stroke (1969?). When she visited, there was reportedly a UFO silently hovering over the grave in the cemetery. Real? Or a wish/fantasy that naturally surfaced to help cope with her understandable emotional loss? No way to know, but that is the story related in Marden's book on that.
There are parts of the Hill account that make you wonder if Betty in her own genuine way.... made some kind of 'initial' favorable impression on her earlier abductors. I could be totally wrong about this, considering the accounts of the many story's related since.
I know there have been many reported abductions accounts that have come to light now before 1961, and you would be correct about that. The two seemingly conflicting facts may not be so conflicting - only if you look at the progression of events since related to 'linear time'. It is possible, since Betty's aliens seemed to not have a real concept of time or aging as we relate to it.
It might be Betty and Barney were still one of the first 'taken'. This based on the behavior what seemed to interest the aliens and what seemed to surprise them about us.
Today's abductions seem to reflect in the aliens now a very extensive knowledge of human ways and physiology. Yet arguably, her abductors seemed to have all the necessary devices ready in place examine her & Barney too.
It maybe possible the aliens branched out after the 1961 Hill event both forward and backward in time. So it is possible an abduction that occurred in 1952 was still after the Hill's experience in 1961.
It would mean extraterrestrials have the ability to travel not only through space but through time too. Time dilation related to Einstein's theories .....and much more we still do not comprehend yet may be at work here making such apparent contradictions (only from our view) possible.
Food for thought. Talking with 'Betty' one on one was one of the highlights of my Ufology part of my life.

To expound a bit on a racial reference..does anyone have any idea of abductions reported by races other than white? I've only heard of Barney Hill. Naturally abductions coming out of other countries (especially communist countries) aren't likely to filter down to our ears and probably wouldn't be reported at all..but it does make me wonder about other races in our own country. What I'm wondering is (and probably always will be) if abductions are a matter of convenience (some poor schmuck driving or riding along in a rural area) or if they are calculated and planed. There are not as many reported 'psychics' of other races as there are of white. I'm still looking for abduction parameters. Steve when you interview witnesses or abductees, would it be a question you would ask (or could ask) if they have any kind of latent psychic ability? I'm half convinced that it plays a role in abductions. Maybe signals put out by the brain are a little different..more on the wavelength of other beings..an attractant. At any rate it's part of my 'why' endeavors

I'm half convinced that it plays a role in abductions. Maybe signals put out by the brain are a little different..more on the wavelength of other beings..an attractant. At any rate it's part of my 'why' endeavors Abductions do not seem to be exclusive to a narrow range of racial profiles. I remember a number of black (male) experiencers. I remember one particularly that was featured on the Robert Stack series 'Unsolved Mysteries' (not Barney). I do not recall many black women though come to think of it. But it maybe simply due to who is willing to come forward out of the closet and tell their story publicly. I remember reading somewhere some gays were actually upset at the possible notion alien's were ignoring certain parts of the population because of sexual orientation. That is not true it turns out either. Upset because they were not abducted? I think that opinion was more an interpretation reflecting their own struggle for social equality than anything else perhaps. I am not too sure anymore abductions are a matter of convience....or random. It maybe all according to a methodical pattern. It may only seem convientent..... because of their great apparent ease in which these entities can 'pluck' anyone at their will. I ask several things along psychic lines to abdcutees. I ask them how much they enjoyed learning in school and/or college. Had they ever had a IQ test? Often their IQ's were higher than average to quite high. Also just my general impressions that come accross as a layman about their intellect. I ask also if witnesses think they have any psychic abilities, either possibly real or imagined. In their own self assessment, after their experiences are these perceived psychic abilities they may feel they have now somehow enhanced? It maybe very well the case, or they have somehow acquired some kind of new communication ability (perhaps from an unknown assist by an implant?) they misinterpret as new found psychic ability. What is psychic ability in their own mind supposed to be like? It might also be entirely organic on their part. Maybe we have a latent ability we are not aware of which the aliens 'switch on', perhaps through hypnotic suggestion? But humans can also impress hypnotic suggestions too! Meaning if that were possible, it might have been discovered within us by now? Maybe there are wavelengths the mind might be radiating we are not aware of yet. Many nuts and bolts researchers limit their ability to interpret certain unusual abilities that cannot be measured yet scientifically. There maybe in reality no such thing as 'paranormal', simply a new phenomenon we do not really understand yet. Steve

That may be the reality of it I have some personal conclusions though. It's researchers and investigators that will stop the downhill slide of what we term Ufology. If we can't present well thought out ideas, researched investigations and interviews people won't ever take this seriously. There may be no connections where I'm looking but for me, it's so important to find them if they exist. I have trouble believing that abductions are random and I really need to know why. I need to understand something eventually to make the 'drama' of it worth while. (by drama I mean my own reactions). I would very much love to hear you conduct an interview sometime

What stands out most about Betty and Barney's abduction was the beeps.. It hit home with me.. it made me realize a lot of things. I had never heard tell of beeps before I read {The Interruped Journey}
They had the courage to come forward .. a lot of people at the time I believe needed to hear it told..

Steve I never believed anything was paranormal. Only not understanding it yet. But I will never believe Ghost are normal.. For some reason I could never accept the fact people see them..
But I expect people to believe me if I tell them I have seen ufos.. like my husband.. for one.
Our we living in reality as it truly is? No , I dont think so.. especially if aliens are coming here, we know very little..

Thanks Steve, It must of been confusing for both of them (Barney and Betty) to go through something like that without there being any other reports at that time. Not only did they go through something that wasnt ordinary and accepted at the time, they also had an interracial marriage that wasnt either . Kudos to the state of New Hampshire for setting up a monument to recognize this extraordinary event !
