Man and Impact in the Americas E. P. Grondine 1998
Appendix A: David Cusick's Sketches of THE ANCIENT HISTORY OF THE SIX NATIONS (1825) brought into modern usage by E. P. Grondine (c) 2004
The five families grew, and made some villages in the country. The Holder of the Heavens was absent from the land, which was destitute of the visits of the Governor of the Universe. This caused the time when they were invaded by the 'Flying Heads', which devoured several people of the country. The Flying Heads made their invasions during the night, but the people were attentive to escape by leaving their huts and concealing themselves in other huts prepared to that purpose.
For instance, there was an old woman who resided at Onondaga. She was left alone in the hut in the evening, while the others deserted. She was sitting near the fire parching some acorns, when a monstrous Head made its appearance at the door. While watching the woman, the monstrous Head was amazed to see her eating the parched acorns, which he thought were coals of fire. The old woman convinced the Flying Heads to eat the fire's coals, and by this put the monsters to flight.
And ever since that time the Flying Heads have disappeared, and it was supposed that they were concealed within the earth.
-- Pgs 354-355
Sunbow commentary: lots of mythology here, as oral traditions are retold many times, some changes happen. Interesting mention without explanation of "Holder of the Heavens and "Governor of the Universe". Also the last line that they are hiding under the earth.
