I just had a fascinating conversation with my niece and nephew about nightmares...
They were both going to sleep and my eight year old nephew told me he dreams about monsters sometimes.
I asked him what the monsters look like.
He told me some of them are big and some of them are small. Some of them have four eyes and some of them have four hands (like the monsters in the Disney cartoon Lilo and Stitch). Some of them are green and some of them are blue.
Then my niece told me about a scary nightmare she had- about a man chasing her around with a knife inside of a building filled with traps.
Then my nephew told me about a really really scary nightmare he had when he was six. He said he dreamed he was standing on the stairs and there was a monster at the bottom of the stairs and it scared him and he couldn't go up the stairs to get away from it...
I asked him what the monster looked like and he said, "I dunno... I don't remember..."
Then he said that the monster pulled him down the stairs and it was really really scary.
I said, "How did he pull you down the stairs? Did he grab you?"
"No..." my nephew said, acting all nervous, "He didn't touch me..."
I said, "Then how did he pull you down the stairs?"
"...I dunno... but he did and I couldn't get away..."
"Was he using the Force like Luke Skywalker?" I asked him with a grin.
He giggled and said, "No... it couldn't be Luke Skywalker because he's a good guy. He had to be a bad guy..."
"Oh OK. Like Darth Vader then, huh?"
"Yea..."
I asked him again what the monster looked like. He said again, "I don't remember..." then he said, "...I couldn't see him because there were just two lights at the bottom of the stairs..."
Hmmmm...

Two lights like little eyeballs or two lights like big UFO lights that zap people? That one time I was in the cemetery I saw two little glow in the dark eyeball lights. They pull me back like Darth Vader but I think I did make the jump to lightspeed as I was running away from them. I never really dream about monsters. It's mainly just animals that chase me at night.

My nephew also told me that the lights were two different colors- pink and blue. The monster was drawing him down the stairs towards them and he couldn't get away... but he wanted to... Sounds too familiar to mine ears... it made me really nervous while he was telling me this but I of course played the grown up and told him, "Wow... that's really scary! It was just a dream though... it wasn't real..." He said also he went into his sister's room during the dream and she wasn't in her room but there was a pink light in her room. He said his sister WAS the pink light... He said he also went into his parents' room and they were gone and there was a blue light in their room... After that he went to the stairs and saw the lights at the bottom and they drew him towards them... and there was a monster behind the lights but he couldn't see the monster. His sister chimed in and said, "It's a good thing you didn't see the monster cuz you would have been scared and you would have screamed cuz the monster probably looks really scary!!" Another thing that bothered me about this nightmare my nephew told me about was before he told it he said, "It was real." I asked him, "You mean the monster was real?" "No..." he said, "...it just felt like it was real... but it wasn't..." Mmm... hmm... Creep out time for sure...

He said "And then I woke up and I was like, how did I get here? I was on the stairs!"
I said, "Where did you wake up?"
He said, "In bed. I didn't know how I got back in bed because I was on the stairs then I woke up..."

Oh Lorelei! As I read this I am grief stricken for your nephew...it is so familiar to me. My own story begins very similar to this. As a 4 and 5 yr old child I became terrified to sleep in my room alone. The closet would light up with blue light and then the "monsters" would come from my closet to take me away. I could never find my voice to scream so that someone could come save me. In my younger years I was told the typical explanation for all of it. I simply had a bad dream, reoccurring or not. My not being able to find my voice was a psychological fear. And lights and portals don't just show up in closets, so I probably just watched too many scary movies. (Except I never watched scary movies when I was that young, I wasn't allowed to , they cause nightmares :/ ) Anyway, I fear he may be experiencing the same paranormal activities we are all too familiar with that leads to the abduction scenario... Oh how I pray that all of this happens for some "bigger picture" we have yet to remember or figure it. My thoughts will be with your family. Continue doing your best to comfort him and protect him. That is all any of us can really do anyway for now, right... Come to think of it, how old is he? Perhaps he is of the right age to encourage his own inner power of will so that he can be reassured that he is not powerless against this monster...there are also some protection symbols that may prove helpful.

My nephew is 8 years old now... he said he had the nightmare when he was 5 but my niece corrected him and said it was when he was 6... ~shrug~
He's a sweet kid- he's a lot like me but he's very boyish. He's going through that stage where he does the exact opposite of what everyone tells him to do...

hmmm your niece corrected him about what age he was when he had the nightmare... how does she know unless she was there or is older than him maybe??? Perhaps this was an abduction of them both at the same time???

Either she remembers him telling her about the nightmare... or...

Let's hope it is only bad dreams . I'm not an expert but I know listening is a good thing and it helps them to have someone they can talk to about this stuff. My 2 year old granddaughter told Kelly and I the other day that there was a monster in the room and I told her that if any tried to come in to this house that I would kick the monsters butte.

My niece and nephew know Aunt Lore will protect them. When my niece was having a problem with a bully at school she told her mommy she was going to tell Aunt Lore so she could beat up the bully...

I have all sorts of semi-memories about being little and stuff happening at night. I do know this for sure: there was NO ONE to tell. I also remember my parents talking (later) about me being afraid of the train. And even then (as an older child) I thought, "I was NOT afraid of the train. It was something in the sky over the field. The train ran along the far side. I wanted to see the area and the train TO BE SURE IT REALLY WAS A TRAIN.
What else would a train be? Well...a little cloud. Or something floating over the meadow where I played in the day time.... Funny what comes up given a chance...

But, we know they are trains. Hard to confuse with something else once you know what a train IS. Now cars, they all make different noises. I would think that living out in the "boonies" like you do, Lorelei, would be favorable when it comes to noises outdoors. I have a sinus infection (went to the dr. yesterday) and I know that can mess with my hearing something awful. In fact, my odd hearing is what gives me a clue that somethings amiss in my head . Earlier this week, a car revving its engine across the street sounded a lot like a helicopter . Keep listening to those kiddos ;D.

I would think that living out in the "boonies" like you do, Lorelei, would be favorable when it comes to noises outdoors. It is usually pretty quiet out here in the boonies. I can recognize the sound of a car, bush planes (light privately owned aircraft), helicopters and military aircraft... cars and trucks and all of that... I can also recognize the sound of a moose stepping in the brush- a sound I heard two nights ago when I got out of my car which sounded to be too close for comfort... I got my cardio workout for the day running down the driveway to the house... Like I told Morgan: I only run when I'm being chased (or when I think there are wild animals or aliens nearby... ) I don't run for leisure... For example: Right now I am hearing the sound of a "snowmobile" (we call them snowmachines) coming from somewhere behind the house and I just saw a flash of a white beam from a headlight off in the trees... Not aliens- just a neighbor out riding a snowmachine at 11:30 pm for some reason... well... it HAS warmed up to above zero and it's Friday night and we have enough snow... ~shrug~

I think maybe if Paulette was just a little girl she may have confused the sound of a UFO with the sound of a train... sometimes a 2 or a 3 year old has trouble distinguishing one loud noise from another...

I wonder why nightmares are so scary? I always dream about things like sharks and alligators and snakes and stuff that I am not afraid of in the day time but when I dream about them at night they scare the bejeepers out of me. Even after I wake up and realize that it was just a dream I still feel freaked out.

Well, yes, but my striving to see the train was to make sure it WAS the train. I needed to see it. They actually built a wood grid over the top of my bed so that I couldn't get out because I'd try to go to the window. But again, yes I was little - I would say 4 more than 2 or 3 although I don't know when it started...
