I think it may have had something to do with the parents divorce and subsequent fact that the boy wasn't getting any money from the books. This may be something to punish the father? Not that the world is as conniving as I think it is often....but....it's a thought.

If the kid really did make the story up it wouldn't be the first time a child has done something like that. Remember that the Salem Witch trials were all because a couple of young girls started making stories up. Kids make up silly make-believe stories all the time. It's the adults involved who end up blowing things way out of proportion. That book wouldn't have been written if the adults hadn't been encouraging the boy to tell his story.
