The Tampa TribunePublished: January 5, 2011 Shift of Earth's magnetic north pole affects Tampa airportTAMPA - Scientists say the magnetic north pole is moving toward Russia and the fallout has reached -- of all places -- Tampa International Airport. The airport has closed its primary runway until Jan. 13 to repaint the numeric designators at each end and change taxiway signage to account for the shift in location of the Earth's magnetic north pole. The closure of the west parallel runway will result in more activity on the east parallel runway and more noise for residential areas of South Tampa. The busiest runway will be re-designated 19R/1L on aviation charts. It's been 18R/36L, indicating its alignment along the 180-degree approach from the north and the 360-degree approach from the south. Later this month, the airport's east parallel runway and the seldom used east-west runway will be closed to change signage to their new designations. The Federal Aviation Administration required the runway designation change to account for what a National Geographic News report described as a gradual shift of the Earth's magnetic pole at nearly 40 miles a year toward Russia because of magnetic changes in the core of the planet.www2.tbo.com/content/2011/jan/05/060831/shift-of-earths-magnetic-north-pole-impacts-tampa-/

Don't they have better things to do than waste their time changing runways because the pole moved a tiny bit? Are all of those pilots who have been flying in there for the past who knows how many years all of a sudden not going to know which way north is? What is going to happen when all of those pilots come cruising in and see that the signs have been changed? I can just see them slamming on the brakes and saying "What thu...?"

It may seem like a trivial thing to do, Skywalker, but to pilots, it will make sense. Runway numbers are tied to compass numbers all around the globe. Pilots would probably find it frustrating if they DIDN'T make the change.

I took flying lessons for a while but I never could get the hang of navigating. I was more of a fly by sight kind of dude. If I could see it I could fly to it but if any clouds or anything had come up I probably would have just drifted aimlessly around in circles and ended up in Timbuktu or someplace.

I think you are in most ways a 'fly by sight' kinda guy ;D

Source: InfowarsCanada He said “I’m only speculating” before making the dramatic statements. But, even w/o a polar shift, a solar CME large enough could bring particles down to the deck if earth is in the wrong place at the wrong time with our current magnetic field protection. Eruptions from the Far-Side: New Global Views of the Sun AGU 2010 Fall Meeting – Press Conference New observations of the Sun indicate that the search for the factors that play a role in the initiation and evolution of eruptive and explosive events, sought after for improved space-weather forecasting, requires knowledge of much, if not all, of the solar surface field. The combination of observations from two NASA missions, the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) enable us to view much of the solar surface and atmosphere simultaneously and continuously for the first time. These near-global observations often show long-distance interactions between magnetic areas that exhibit flares, eruptions, and frequent minor forms of activity. These interactions were previously suspected, but have never been observed until now. We analyzed a series of flares, filament eruptions, coronal mass ejections, and related events which occurred on 1–2 August 2010. These events extended over a full hemisphere of the Sun, only two-thirds of which is visible from the Earth’s perspective. Source: AGUvideos
