Magnitude 6.4 Quake Strikes Off Vancouver Island
Published September 09, 2011 FoxNews.com VANCOUVER, British Columbia – A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck Friday off the coast of British Columbia, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake struck 12:41 p.m. PDT at a depth of 14.3 miles about 173 miles west of Vancouver, the USGS said. The quake was initially reported to have a magnitude of 6.7 but was later downgraded by the USGS. The quake's epicenter just off the west coast of Vancouver Island, south of Port Hardy. Stephen Halchuck, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, said the quake lasted for 20-30 seconds and rattled buildings across Vancouver Island and the southwest portion of British Columbia. He said there has been no immediate reports of damage in the region. According to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center no tsunami was expected. However, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center advised that underwater landslides may cause "local tsunamis" at some coastal locations that experienced strong tremors. There were also no immediate reports of damage in the closest parts of Washington state, including the northern tip of the Olympic Peninsula and the San Juan Islands. As a precaution, the Washington state Transportation Department sent inspectors to check for damage at the Alaskan Way Viaduct, an aging elevated highway on the Seattle waterfront, as well as two other bridges. I think Shami might be right about her earthquake prediction. There seems to be lots of activity building up in the northwest.

I came on as soon as fox news put it on. My husband leaves it on fox all day long.. I posted under my experiences earlier today.. I believe this is the right location but not so sure it is the big one. I seen those boulders falling again, but this time from where I was standing which seem like wilderness, I could see the ocean.. Vancouver does have mountains.
My daughters boyfriend lives out across the bay where this hit, been waiting to hear some news from him.. .. I hope it does not mean they will get hit again.. I think yes but then again something is amiss. First it is not a 7 or 8 quake.. I guess there could be a first time.. in this case, but I don't thinks so

It seems like these quakes are working their way around the pacific rim. Japan in March, Indonesia in April, Aleutians in September, now Vancouver? Any pattern? San Francisco next?

hmm... 940 miles away from Anchorage and everyone is freaking out about it...
That's REALLY far away from any civilized or densely populated places. I'm not too concerned about this one Jo. ~nods~

No...I didn't figure you were in any danger from it..but I did think it might be contributing to the vibes Lois is getting.

Mount St. Helens was building a dome a few years ago. They even restricted people from hiking up it but it never did anything. Maybe the one in Alaska will chill out also.

A few years ago .. I thought Alaska was going to get something really big .. Nothing happen I seen a glacier a good ten miles long in a dream floating out in the ocean . A couple of days later they had a report on the news a large chuck of the south pole had broken off and was floating in the ocean. I never seen any pictures of it. This ice I'm sure lead to to believe it was somewhere in the North.
I can never remember.. is this Volcano near Fairbanks or Anchorage? My cousins lives in both places. Her parents went to Alaska before it ever was a state. It has been years since we heard from them.. I use to know the lay out out there pretty good, now I don't seem to remember any of it.
Fairbanks is North and Anchorage is in the bay to the south right? Now where is the Volcano? It is near the bay too isn't it?
Look at me.. all I have to do is look it up.. I know my head is better today. thank goodness.

She has not return my pm to her on facebook..

Off the coast of Oregon one of the volcano's was building a nice little shelf of lava that they didn't notice for awhile and others are twinging here and there..it's maybe enough to trigger something bigger. I once asked a geologist if little quakes were a stress relief to possibly prevent larger quakes..he said nope..doesn't work that way..if there's a lot of activity..it's building to some more hefty happening.

No...I didn't figure you were in any danger from it..but I did think it might be contributing to the vibes Lois is getting. I figured that's what you meant by it. I'm not just talking about me I'm talking about all the people up here. That area is very rural and sparsely populated. Lois, you're right. Anchorage is near the coast. They have mountains there too... but this volcano is almost 1,000 miles away from Anchorage. Trust me, your cousins in both cities will be fine.

I was sitting in my office and felt the floor move up and down like being in a boat going over swells. Other folks said they thought the action was side to side - but one woman on the TV coverage said it was definitely a rolling motion and I agree. the vertical blinds in my window started to move and continued to move as did fainter perceptions of the motion. TV said 15 seconds...that's actually pretty long.
I was the first one to yell, "Hey what's happening!" The women in the front of the office all felt it but assumed that they were having some personal anamoly. Interesting. I guess I do trust myself...
Nothing broke or fell off buildings, no one was hurt. Everyone in the office immediately started thinking about how far from home they were. In a serious quake, power lines would be down, maybe cracks in the highway and bridges out. I remember hearing two office woman in Japan talking about how after the tsunami, they had to walk to their homes - 4 hours in high heels. Over debris and such.
If we have a tsunami, I am on relatively high ground away from the water (depends on how big it is) however we are across the street from a small river. The salt water is partially tidal in it - it would back up and probably take the road out and maybe maroon us in our house. We have a 4 wheel drive vehicle and could go up into the hills - for awhile. There's nothing to eat up there (except us by something else).

I think paulette is talking about the one that recently hit Vancouver. She lives up in that area. It's amazing that something so solid as the Earth can suddenly start moving like water. that's not something people are used to. I have never been in an earthquake myself but I bet it is an awe-inspiring experience. I hope nothing else happens up there but I get the feeling it is building up to something big. We shall see.

The big one we had up here when I was in high school felt like a the ground had turned into water too. It was rising, pitching, and moving left to right at the same time. The house felt like it was bobbing up and down. It's an extremely disorienting and nauseating feeling... thankfully it was over quickly... but it seemed like it lasted a lot longer than it actually did. It's quite frightening...

My parents and sister were in the 7.8 West Yellowstone quake and it was horrifying for them. Trying to get out, a fissure just opened up in the road ahead..swallowed the car ahead of them and closed like some giant clam. My father had to drive over the top of the thing..imagine how you'd feel knowing you were driving over something like that. WE may be used to lots of quakes in our area but it's a lot different when something over 7. hits.

Here's our earthquake situation on Vancouver Island - where the last quake was. We are in an area of three converging oceanic plates - diving under the continent. The south end of the island has been rising. The north end of the island (where the quake was - but in the ocean and 18 kilometers down - is sinking. We are in the middle. The last serious quake here was in the early 1900s - on a Sunday. Kids were not in school and a lot of people were in church. Almost all the chimneys fell off or through the houses. The discription I've read of that was that a person heard the church bell ringing at the wrong time - looked out (people used to sit on their porches) and saw waves moving across the ground. It was big but I forget how big.
We have been told that the fracture point is likely to be across the island approx. where I live. We have an earthquake kit but we sleep on the end of the house that has a very large fir tree leaning out over the roof. It would probably come down across the bedroom.
A funny (happily not serious story). An older couple I know decided to have tea in bed. She got up and made it and they both sat up leaning back against the headboard. This was an UNUSUAL occurance - usually he got up and she stayed in bed longer. It was windy and a huge tree came down across their modular home (immoble trailer). The large branches crashed down on their bed - where their feet would have been. They were totally unharmed (but needed a new house). That's having your bad and good luck at the same time.
