Before I was married the home I grew up in had many frightful things happen constantly.. The top floor of the home had burned in a fire and then damage to the floor was rebuilt. This was around 1920.. I have a couple of brothers who saw a little girl many times walking the halls on the second floor of our home. It had four bedrooms and a bath.. One of my older brothers seen her one night as she passed his bedroom door. She was about 4 or 5 years old he said. She had one hand over her face.. She turned and looked at my brother who's bed was visible from the doorway. He said one side her face was so distorted and ugly. He could not moved from shock and she went on down the hallway out of sight. He told of how she had long light hair..and a dress like nightgown on that went to the floor.. We never told anyone outside the family for fear of ridicule .. My younger brother seen her coming up the staircase late at night, as he was going to go down to the kitchen and get a snack. He ran to his room and slammed the door.. He was afraid to go by her on the steps.. Doors would slam all the time up stairs and we would think it was one of us until my sister was in the hall and the bathroom door slammed with out any one else on the second floor but her.. she did not see anyone.. My Mother's piano would play the high noted keys only one at a time.. like ping ping ping. she sleep right off the living room on the first floor. No one was ever out there . this happen when everyone was in bed. I have to admit I seen nothing.. but my walls would bang sometimes at night which my brother sleep on the other side of the one wall and he was always asleep.. Windows would be open come morning in the dead of winter on a frigid night. We always heard strange sounds. Even the basement sometimes sounded like someone was banging on the furnace, it would come up the registers in all the rooms. .. Then a 90 year old woman who lived next door who was there most of her life said the top floor had burned and a little girl had died. She lived next door at the time and remembered it well. I don't know who she was but after most of the kids were gone. Mother never experience too much of any thing strange. Until one night my oldest sister came home from Berkley Ca. to visit. She said the hall light keep coming on and she would turn the switch down on the wall and later it was on again and the switch was up again. She no longer sleep up stairs. I'm very sleepy now, when I'm more awake I will add to this thread as things come to mind..

I remember you telling me that story before, Shami. Did anybody live in the house in between the time the fire happened and the time your family moved in? If so they may have seen the ghost too. There might be a written record of it somewhere in a book or something. Was this house in Cape Girardeau?

Hollywood has made ghosts frightening. Granted, some ghosts stories involve the person visited going insane or whatever - but usually that's because they were culpable in some way.
Ghosts come and go through our reality. Some have a purpose and don't realize that most people can't see them and them and that they can't change things here anymore. Some just seem lost. I liked the movie Sixth Sense - both of the ghosts had things to work out and helped each other. Same thing with Ghost Story with Woopi Goldberg as relunctant medium and Patrick Swawze (now on the other side himself) as a ghost.
I had an "old lady" in a house we lived in from 1978 - 1996. She influenced how I seemingly redecorated the house (and unknowingly restored orginal colors). She rattled around at night. She was present when I sat up all night in labor with my firstborn (She told me I was wasting precious energy and go back to bed).
At one point, I had "an assignment" from a course I was taking and it was an exorcism. (OK, I know now that you know that I'm a wacko). It involved putting down some ghost bait (I can't remember what that was) and then a string that looped around that and then ran outside and I was to light that. The idea being that the ghost would leave. (It sounds stupid now and it seemed stupid then). I started this dubious project, got half-way through and then said, "Hey! This doesn't feel good to me. You lived here first. Why can't we all just live together here? You are an elder. I refuse to lay claim to the house and kick you out."
I sat there for awhile and then gathered up my props and went and did something else. She never bothered us again! I mean, the creepy sounds at night, the feeling of presence. I think she was there but not so upfront about it. I continued to get help with things. For example, I planted some freesia bulbs in the front garden. (They are not likely to survive in Canada over the winter). I went to water them two days later and there were some straggling plants nearby with flowers already blooming. Freesias! Not the ones I had just planted. THEY came up later.
Stuff like that happened all the time. It didn't scare me. So when our dog died, we buried his ashes next to the sandbox (where my kids didn't play anymore but he used to lay there and watch them as toddlers). I figured - the old lady now has a good dog. He was never bothered by her - she didn't care if he snuck onto the couch at night. I still drive by that house - it has gone through many owners (and at one time was a grow show, then was cleaned up and the gardens cleaned up and now seems to have a owner with lots of trucks and it is for sale again. I wonder if she negotiates with each set of people. I wish her well - staying or moving on. She definitely did not "move" with us when we upgraded to a house with two bathrooms. I was surprised how quiet the new house was. Now I'm in another house in the same area that my husband finished raising his teenaged girls in. There are occasional rattling sounds that I assume are cats or racoons in the carport. Nothing else. So its not ME.

Paulette .. you seem to of deal with it very well. Our family really never paid much mind to strange events..
Sky this was in Bloomington where I live now.
A very strange thing happen . My parents moved out in 79 .. they had lived there 40 years. With no accidents. They must of been gone not more than two weeks. The old house burned to the ground in 30 minutes our neighbor told us. Went up like straw.. burning. No one was even living it it yet.
The man that bought it was planning on doing some work on it. But had not even been in it since he bought it. No one figured out why it burned.....I think since our family left there was no reason for the ghost to stay in it. Maybe they were mad my parents for leaving. lol
All I know is Mr Brinning was the landlord when my parents moved in.. later he was going to move to Florida so my parents decided to buy it. I can remember as a child, that huge home only cost 50 dollars a month. Seems impossible now.. He may of had it for years or he may have bought it for a rental . I do not know how he come by it or when.
He never mention the top floor had burned either, but that hallway I always knew was unlevel..
One night my sister was screaming, I had just graduated from high school, I ran to her room and I could hear her say. Get out of here .. get out of here. and a pillow was flying across the room. She had throne something at this person.. I turned on the light and no one was in there. She was standing on her bed. She just keep screaming and I could not help her.. I got my Dad to come up stairs. Later she said it was a man wearing a black hood and robe.. This is not the sister who had this mind altering feeling. The sister was younger than her yet..
My parents had to take her to the hospital as they could not bring her out of her hysteria.. She says she remembers nothing of it the next day. She was seeing something I'm sure of it.. An alien a ghost, who knows. but it did have a hooded robe on. she keep screaming at me it did and wanted to know if I seen it before it left. Never got her to tell how it left. Just vanished.. Now she did see ghost in her own home way after here kids had left home she got a smaller home. Her husband and her had been divorced for years. Her x boyfriend"s grandfathers home is where she moved.. She was doing ironing around midnight . she wore a uniform for work and was getting them ready for morning. When he the grand fathers ghost appeared right in front of her.. she heard him say get out .. get out .. get out or you will be hurt living here.. She got ran to her car and called her son to come over.. She knew this may by photos only. He had passed away years before she went with his grand son in high school .. the parents had it after he died and then they moved out and my sister moved in .. I was there only once, the whole town was having garage sales. I went the night before as this was out of town and we had to set up early..
When she showed me this house I was find, but soon as I started climbing the stairs I got this strange feeling, I looked down at the wall in a small bedroom, there was crayon marks on the wall above an old bed. It was slopped ceilings. Right then I froze, wanted to go down stairs. All the way down the steps , I keep screaming Raymond.. Raymond.. Raymond, he is a bad person, who is he.. My sister said "OMG Lois, he is the man that built this house and the grandfather of Rex, the guy she knew..
She keep looking at me.. trying to figure out how I knew his name. She knew darn good and well I never knew this man, I only met Rex once . I was married and had kids .. I was not at home with her when she knew him.. I did not even know the parents name.
I will say this much, it was the crayon marks on the wall that give me his name. How it happen I don't know..
So when she seen his Ghost, I thought Oh no another family member who sees ghost. I began to think maybe she did see a ghost in her room back home that night I walked in on her to help her..
I never believed in ghost, I always doubted my brothers and sisters. But they still today swear they saw what they saw.. One is going on 80 a very lovable brother who would not hurt a fly.. He taught Sunday school at the church all his life. I cannot even remember him doing a wrong deed in his entire life ..
So today when he says the little girls face was torn off. I believe him..
My family is the Bakers dozen.. and all wackoo!!

WoW! That is an awesome story Lois! I bet that little girl was the ghost of the girl in the fire. Maybe when you moved out of the house she burned it down because she didn't have anybody to play with...or scare. You and your family sound like they have seen lots of ghosts. Maybe I should come up for a visit.

All wacko's my husband says.. I forgot to mention it is his words... I never say that. That's one of the things I admire about my dad. Although he makes fun of me and tries to scare me when I get in one of my moods he never calls me wacko. My friends do... but that's beside the point. They say it affectionately though.
