Ok.. this is happening right now as we speak. One of my friends called me and pointed it out to me.
There is a huge circle around the Moon like a very big one. I can't exactly measure the radius obviously because I am on the ground but, its a wide circle. May be a a couple of metres away from moon as i see it from the ground.
The circle is circular with almost zero eccentricity. You folks might also observe this once it is night. I don't know. It is 2:00 AM here. I was informed of it at about 12:00.
May be it has got something to do with the lunar eclipse of yesterday. I can't be sure.
Just wondering, do any of you folks understand or can explain this phenomenon?
P.S: I can't take a picture as i don't have a great camera that can do this. But imagine a thick dot like moon in the middle with a circle around it.
Regards, Srinivas.

I wish I could see the moon right now... I won't be able to though probably until next month.

I'm sure it won't go anywhere before then. At least I hope it won't.

I'm sure it won't go anywhere before then. At least I hope it won't. it totally thinned down about 30 mins ago and now its gone.. ofcourse.. it was raining today.. so the sky is pretty cloudy.. besides.. i don't think the circle moves with respect to moon.. if it is reflect of icy particles.. then.. they won't move along with the moon methinks.. mod: read through that.. yes.. I see EXACTLY what is described. regards, Srinivas

Yep, it seems that Moon circles are a local phenomenon based on atmospheric conditions. They show up mostly during the winter when it is colder. I've seen it happen a few times here in the states.

The old "sourdoughs" up here (that's an Alaska term for old-timers) say when there is a ring around the moon it means it is going to snow... this usually is what happens.
~shrug~
But the ring is not usually that far away from the moon up here... Satansrini said it was like a couple of meters away from the moon... up here it's usually like only a centimeter away from the moon...
Hmmm... interesting...

This atmospheric condition is mentioned in the IFO (Identified Flying Objects thread under 'Moon'. A nice video on the Moon accompanying it. Moon Ring , also known as a Winter Halo, or Moon Dog , is a phenomenon that usually appears in conjunction with a full moon. There appears to be a whitish ring, approximately 10 to 20 times the size of the moon, surrounding the moon and centered on it. It is caused by refraction of the light from the full moon in the ice particles floating in the clouds, as opposed to a rainbow, where light refracts in the water vapor that makes up the clouds. So 'old timers' gazing at these ice particles thinking it is going to snow makes good sense. Steve theedgeofreality.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=stevesifos&action=display&thread=468

That's a cool picture. I had forgotten you had written about the moon and sun on your IFO thread. Thanks for reminding us.

Harmony was having problems posting a youtube video as well, she posted about it on the "What music are you listening to" thread. Bewildered said it has something to do with coding problems on the internet, and the way to fix it is to copy-paste the code directly from the address bar at the top of your browser. Try it that way, and see if it works. To post an image: <img> COPY THE LINK AND DIRECTLY PASTE IT IN HERE BETWEEN THE IMGS WITH NO SPACES </img> (except instead if <> it's []) To post a youtube video: <youtube> LINK TO YOUTUBE VIDEO </youtube> (except instead if <> it's [])
