UFO Researcher Drew Ryan Maras Killed in Arizona Shootout, One Deputy DeadJanuary 10, 2012 By LBG1 Authorities looking into whether Maras shot and killed New Hampshire couple near SedonaWhy did “UFO researcher” Drew Ryan Maras, an “avid investigative researcher and crusading advocate for peace, love, hope and—most importantly—truth”–open fire on Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies early Sunday morning in a strip mall located in Anthem, Arizona? One deputy died, Maricopa Sheriff’s Deputy William Coleman. Authorities are waiting for ballistics tests to see if 30-yr-old Maras was involved in the shootings of a New Hampshire couple on Friday near Sedona, Arizona. Drew Ryan Maras listed on his Facebook page he “lives in Kihei, Hawaii”, and, “From Chicago, Illinois”. According to a news report from AZCentral.com, Maras lived in an apartment complex in Peoria, Arizona. Maras was a 1999 Libertyville, Illinois High School graduate. Early Sunday morning Maras’ 2012 apocalyptic end occurred in a minivan, his pit bull, unharmed, one sheriff’s deputy dead. Maras’ father, an Illinois resident, declined comment when reached Monday, leaving efforts to reconstruct Maras’ life reliant on public records and Maras’ own prolific writing. This much is known about the 30-year-old who most recently lived in Peoria: he served as a reservist in the U.S. Marines from 1999 to 2003, attended Arizona State University the following spring and summer, and worked last year as a temporary employee with Peoria’s parks and recreation department. Maras’ lone experience with the criminal-justice system in Arizona came in 2004 when he was charged in the Pinetop-Lakeside Justice Court with driving with a suspended license. Prosecutors dismissed the charges months later. In the intervening years, Maras developed a deep fascination with UFOs, claims about government cover-ups and an apocalyptic event slated for Dec. 21, 2012. From the website Open Your Eyes to 2012 and Beyond: “A proponent for the advancement of ufology and the ancient astronaut theory, as well as an avid investigative researcher and crusading advocate for peace, love, hope and—most importantly—truth, Drew R. Maras uses his unique vision and passionate writing style to bring you the world through his eyes. Trained by the United States Marines Corps infantry, Maras has a provocative view of the world revealed in Open Your Eyes: To 2012 and Beyond. He is regarded as an original thinker with an uncanny instinct to understand life beyond the headlines. A catalyst for sparking proactive change, the author brings genuine and sincere devotion to the cause of revealing truth in today’s world and its future. In his free time he enjoys the good company of family and friends, as well as writing, traveling, and exploring off the beaten path with his two dogs.”deathby1000papercuts.com/2012/01/ufo-researcher-drew-ryan-maras-killed-in-arizona-shootout-one-deputy-dead/

Never heard of him. I did a check of past member history, he had no connection with MUFON, EPIC, or any other UFO investigations best I can tell. He was not with EPIC I am sure. But I do not pretend I know everyone out there either...least of all me.
There are a lot of, how to say this politely, many 'original thinkers' in government conspiracy groups that piggyback onto many UFO meetings. I have commented about this passingly in the past. I ran into a share of these paranoid anti-govt types associating at MUFON meetings. Many thought (including myself) they were a distraction from any positive research. They were politely tolerated, many other sincere people interested in the UFO phenomenon politely just stopped attending those meetings. This guy a UFO researcher? Weird. If there is an gov.t cover-up about UFO's, no answers will be ever found through such individuals.
My sad condolences to the police officers family, and to the victims he is accused of murdering in Sedona. No legitimate UFO researcher needs to carry a weapon with him IMO. If they are, for what ever personal reasons, I prefer to keep a big distance from such persons, they have no place in any real 'Hynek' or 'Vallee' like investigations.

I've never heard of him either. I've been checking over the internet and it appears that he recently wrote a book and he created a website in 2009. He also has a facebook account with over 4000 friends so obviously somebody knew him.
I also found out the deputy and the two other people who Maras is accused of killing were shot with a high-powered rifle. The deputy was klled while reponding to a burglary call while the other two were killed in Sedona and were an older couple visiting from New Hampshire.
It sounds like he was much more into the NWO/government conspiracy scene rather than UFOs. I wonder why people in the media are calling him a ufologist? Conspiracy theorist might be better. I guess UFOs are a more convenient scapegoat.

More. my.earthlink.net/article/top?guid=20120111/92f707f1-71d1-49d7-93a2-5d278c947432Ariz. officials: Couple, deputy killed by same man This undated handout photo provided by the Yavapai County (Arizona) Sheriffs Office shows Carol Raynsford. Raynsford and James Johnson, both from New Hampshire, were murdered in Sedona, Ariz. earlier in the week by suspected gunman Drew Ryan Maras who is also suspected of killing Maricopa County Sheriff Deputy William Coleman on Jan. 8. All three killings were likely committed by Maras and all match the same weapon according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. Maras was killed by return fire by Maricopa County Sheriff's Deputies on Sunday when Deputy Coleman was killed. (AP Photo)JACQUES BILLEAUD From Associated Press January 11, 2012 3:26 AM EST PHOENIX (AP) — Investigators say they believe a New Hampshire couple found dead in a car near a northern Arizona resort town and a sheriff's deputy killed days later in Phoenix were shot by the same gunman — a U.S. Marine Corps reservist who was living out of his van and may have thought the world was going to end this year. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Tuesday that ballistics experts confirmed the rifle casings at the two crime scenes came from the assault rifle used by Drew Ryan Maras. Arpaio described Maras as a Marine Corps reservist who briefly attended Arizona State University, recently lost his maintenance job in nearby Peoria and was living out of his van. The 30-year-old may have been depressed, had lost contact with his family, believed the world was going to end in 2012 and showed an interest in UFOs, the sheriff said. The deaths of the New Hampshire couple had baffled authorities over the weekend. The bodies of James Johnson of Jaffrey, N.H., and Carol Raynsford of Nelson, N.H., were found Friday in a sedan at a remote highway turnout near Sedona. Investigators said they found six shell casings on one side of the car, and two on the other side. Johnson and Raynsford frequently hiked and camped together and were in the area to look for a house for Johnson, said Raynsford's friend, Jayne Kelly. They had planned to head home at the end of the month Investigators still don't know why they were targeted. Officials have said there was no evidence that the two were robbed or that they had provoked the shooter. "I don't think we will ever know the motive," Yavapai County Sheriff Scott Mascher said. Maras fatally shot sheriff's Deputy William Coleman on Sunday after the officer responded to a burglary call at a Phoenix medical building, Arpaio said. Coleman knocked on Maras' van to rouse him. Maras responded by opening the vehicle's sliding door and firing 29 shots, authorities said. Other deputies got off 41 rounds and killed Maras. By Monday, investigators had begun to draw a connection between the two shootings, which took place 85 miles away from each other. Maras used a variant of an AR-15 assault rifle and shot unique military grade ammunition that has a steel core, giving the slug more penetrating power, investigators said. He served with the Marines from 1999 to 2003, completing infantry training with a specialty as a rifleman before joining a reserve unit in Chicago, Marine Maj. Shawn Haney said. Authorities said he had no serious criminal violations. A search of Arizona court records showed just a 2004 citation for driving with a suspended license. But that case was dismissed. Coleman, 50, was a 20-year veteran. He is survived by a wife and two young children, ages 4 and 7. He also has grown children in another state. He was assigned as a patrol deputy and had previously worked the sheriff's lake patrol unit. ___ Associated Press writers Felicia Fonseca in Flagstaff, Ariz., and Kathy McCormack in Concord, N.H., contributed to this report.

"It sounds like he was much more into the NWO/government conspiracy scene rather than UFOs. I wonder why people in the media are calling him a ufologist? Conspiracy theorist might be better. I guess UFOs are a more convenient scapegoat. '
Compared to the sad weird NWO/government conspiracy scene, in their eyes, guess they will use anything including Ufology as a convenient cover to gain any notion of credibility. That says a lot about them.
NWO/government conspiracy groups exploit the UFO gov't cover up angle all the time, hoping for any sympathetic response. Any place they can get some validation.
They were a regular feature at the local Mufon meetings in San Jose, California, and I thought it was insane to be associated with them. Many, and myself included were getting fed up with them. I felt they were entitled to their views, but once or twice as a state officer I mentioned to my State Director I thought it was bad news to have joint meetings with the conspiracy con gang. I was ignored of course. The local in-decisive Mufon state directors were chummy with them, and imagine they still are...and that is what is representing Mufon there.
I imagine it is not different elsewhere in other Mufoon chapters. These NWO/government conspiracy groups are well embedded in Mufon locally, and likely elsewhere where ever a UFO cover up becomes a political catch word. As usual, doubt if Muffoon HQ is even aware of it, like many other things about Mufon.
Breaking down any walls of secrecy about UFO's will never be accomplished though any NWO/government conspiracy group. Maybe this will be a wake up call, but I doubt it.
This guy was not a UFO researcher, nor ever was one. A 'crusading advocate for peace, love, hope and—most importantly—truth' ?? GMAB - just that other web page's more NWO/government conspiracy baloney.
Their freedom of speech should not be about manipulating and misrepresenting other honest persons desiring to solve a scientific mystery.

This incident is bugging me for some reason. I was checking out Maras website and Facebook account yesterday and what I saw were new people signing up and thanking him for inviting them, people making posts about love and light and laughter, and others asking questions and making comments just like they do each and every day...and now he is dead.
None of thoese questions will be answered. None of those comments replied to. All of his 4000 plus Facebook friends will gradually go on with their lives and forget that they ever knew Drew Ryan Maras.
That bothers me for some reason.
I remember back when that wacko Jared Loughner went ballistic and murdered a bunch of people in cold blood, and I remember how they portrayed him as being interested in UFOs also, although he actually had very little interest in ufology. He was much more involved in the NWO/conspiracy theory scene also. The UFOs were just a coincidental connection but that's what everybody latched onto.
That's not what bothers me though. I just read an article that portrayed Maras as an out of work, paranoid, friendless, homeless person who was living in his van and I try to compare that to the same Maras on Facebook who had over 4000 friends and it's hard to make the connection. How can somebody have that many friends on the internet yet virtually none in real life?
I also recently read an article on Jared Loughner where some journalist was attempting to analyze some of the writing that Loughner did just before he went berzerk and this is what they wrote about him: "But one clue reveals his consuming thoughts at the time: his Internet postings. His videos and online rants, plus new scraps of investigative evidence, portray a young man at the end of a road, in his childhood room, tapping out messages to an indifferent world."
Maybe that's what bothers me...possibly because it hits a little too close to home. Here we all are typing out messages to each other on this forum, and on other internet chat groups, and we read each other's posts each day, and we call each other friends but in reality we really don't know very much about ourselves as actual people. As much as we may think we know each other there is no telling who we really are talking to on the other side of the screen. Are there any more Jared Loughner's or Drew Maras's out there? Is anybody else sitting at the end of their road typing out messages to an indeifferent world?
God, I hope not...

I just noticed that both those dudes lived in Arizona. Coincidence? Is there something going on out there that we don't know about?
