Awhile back Skywalker and I were talking about tornadoes here on the forum and mentioned starting a new thread . Both Skywalker and I like to chase them and have for several years. I decided tonight to go ahead and start the thread since there is a tornado warning( tornado sighted on the ground) issued to the counties just west of me and it's heading my direction and should be here in about the next half hour or so ;D . No biggy, we get warnings all the time . Unfortunately though I just heard on the weather channel that a town was hit in Kansas. I hope nobody was hurt or killed but I heard so far there have been injuries reported and they're not letting anyone in the town. I hope to get some pics or videos this year, but my biggest hope of all is that there isnt any injuries or deaths like there was last year . Ill try to add some pics soon that Ive taken in the past during some of my chasing days. The tornado sirens are going off,,,,,got to go !!!

Cliff, we are having storms . there is a second line, you are having it. Suppose to reach here in the night. I hope it does not keep me up all night.
Do you have a shelter or basement. I hate them darn things, I was caught in one walking home from school. I got on my stomach and crawled two blocks . It pick me up and blew me back one block, so I had to crawl it all over again, I had dirt in my nails from clawing into the ground., Once I hung on to a pole but it blew me off it also and I went back a block. I had mud and blood when I got to our back door and kicked it with my feet as I could not stand up and let wind get underneath my body.
My father heard me,. and got me to the basement . I had a dress on and my legs had no skin left on the front of them. I hate Tornado's My weather channel is on in this room with me now.

I had my brownie dress on. Brownie class was after school or I would of been home when it hit . Every thing at our small airport was destroyed , they built a much larger airport afterwards. O course we have a giant one today, with Jet passenger planes going in and out all day. I also had mud in my mouth as I could not breath with my face in the dirt. The alley I had to crawl up to our backyard was made of cinder from burnt coal. It was what tore my legs to shreds.... My Father was so mad at the brownie teacher for letting us go home. She did tell us to hurry as a storm was coming . a wall cloud hung over me to the west . It was pitched black . All was find. It was still as a mouse and nothing moving but within seconds her comes the horrible wind blowing everything in its sites. When I see a wall cloud today I get indoors.

A lot of wind here this evening! Loud, and comes and goes is what makes it weird . Like, right now I'm hearing traffic on the near by hiway (2:31 a.m.) and it gets louder and I realize its the wind! I recall how I've talked about hearing the trains all night now, and thankfully it's not that kind of noise. But can't sleep. Again .

She's fine, whew ! Thanks for asking. Very close, too close ! It went just south of my location ( by about 5-7 miles) but my sister in Buffalo said it missed her by only 1 mile !( Way too close). Sad situation for the loss of lives, people hurt, and damage.
I dont chase them at night. I want to be able to see what's happening with the situation around me and at night all we really have available is radar. I did take a short video last night of the storm towards the direction of the Buffalo area after it left our area,,,very intense storm . We got dime sized hail here, just 2 miles south they got golf ball sized.
Tis the season ,,,,, Lois,,,,. are You O.K.?

My Dad had bought property in a little town called Long Lane . It is just East of Buffalo Since he and Mom past away I was forced to sell the property as part of the estate . I have money hungry brother and sisters . But in Buffalo there is (was ) a restaurant called the Victorian Cafe. Some 30+years I ate there and I remember eating breakfast there . I ordered a normal breakfast of Bacon and eggs and toast , coffee. I got a 7 coarse meal from them . The cost was $1.50 I never forgot that . I happy that your sister was not hurt or no damage was done to there property . Over here in Ky we are still safe . Just wind and rain I am worried about one young lady in Harrisburg IL . That town was really hit hard and I hope that she is OK . Ron

Ron, just heard about Harrisburg, IL. that is a straight line almost due east of cape. I have not talk to them but seems their area is ok. I'm sure what hit Harrisburg , went over them first. Hope your lady friend is ok also. We had storms but not so bad here. Now we are having over 40 miles an hour wind. It also is warm. This winter season sure is strange. Has it passed you yet? hope so.

I was watching that on The Weather Channel last night, about how the lower 48 have been having an unusually warm winter and it might be the warmest winter on record this time but they're still crunching the numbers on it. Europe and Alaska though were much colder than usual they said... very odd weather indeed... I hope JC is alright too... I'm glad you guys are OK, and Cliff, I'm also glad to hear that your sister survived this also unscathed. One mile is definitely too close for comfort...

I'm good. . . just never know how to plan my day any more. Last night and this morning were very warm . By 11:30 a.m. here the wind was blowing so hard it felt cold at 55 degrees. A water main broke down the street from the school and flooded two houses. I had to get my office "ready" in case it flooded at school, and then we loaded up the kids and went to another school. Sad about tornados hitting places. I've been to Branson enough times that I recognize places that are damaged . Glad every one here is safe from the weather. . .

Branson was fortunate enough to not have any deaths . It could have been so much worse then it was . From what I heard on the news, damage assessment was around 15 hotels, 12 theatres, and about 50 other businesses not to mention homes. From what they said the tornado hit one place down 76 Blvd. and missed another and so on. I recognized alot of places too Jc. We were just there last year at the car museum (damaged) and the mall (damaged). I love that town and Silver Dollar City is so cool ( and fun) . They're saying it'll all be up and back to normal by the time the tourist season comes. Seeing all the devastation in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky (Ron,you o.k?) was horrible ! I hope no more hit but this is just the very beginning of what could be another very bad season.

I think this will be a very bad year for tornados but a good year for the tornado chasers. Should be lots of good photos taken. Hopefully nobody will get killed in the process.

Charles thanks for your post . My kids are a lttle west of the area in Indiana. Ron is also close to the danger zone. I watch it last night what the weather expert predicted on the weather channel.. He had the area of Tenn. Kentucky and Indiana all covered with white on the map. Exactly where these mid west tornado's hit today. 9 dead in Kentucky , 9 dead in Indiana. My daughter about an hour ago said when the storm came over them just before it went into Indiana we thought for sure we were going to have a tornado.
Why didn't you tell us Mom. Well I could see they were in the red for bad storms but the white was east of them. Yes I know it could of been them, but I take his advice down to the letter, or my kids would of been in the one last summer at the St. Louis airport. They were on there way up. I tried to tell them, No, you are not coming up, this area is in the white. They said Mom you will let us know where they are as time goes on.
Boy, do they trust their mommy still today. I kept my eyes on the radar and guided them through two tornado's . then as they were approaching St. Louis by pass, I called and prayed to God they had not reach the bypass.
My daughter answered the phone. She said we are getting up to it now. I screamed no into the phone.. Get off.. Get off. They got off and went into a Macdonalds . the only place near the bypass was just to the left of her car. . I told one is coming down in the Metro area somewhere right now. About the time she would of been getting off the interstate East of the Airport it would of been barreling down on her on the ground after it passed the airport. It did stay on the ground and went east right over the interstate North. . It tore up a residential area there.
A highway patrol men on this road was trying to stop traffic, and warn them but how do you stop cars on a interstate. . My daughters said Mom a trucker came in just not and said he seen it coming down to the north as he was coming down south off the interstate. Then she said we got to get under the tables in here the windows are about to blow out. ..
So tonight was the reason my daughter called and said " you did not warn us last night". I told her I trusted the expert man on the weather channel.. He always get it right. Don't ever go anywhere if there is land on the map covered in white.. Those poor family's . I don't understand this weather . We never have storms like this up here this far North so early in the year. Things are changing.

Glad they're safe Lois ! My fiance's son, and my former neighbor across the street were caught in the St. Louis storm last year also on their way to Illinois. They were on the phone describing flying debris to Kelly and had to pull over because they couldn't see. I remember that storm well,,it was during the night hrs.
Ive mentioned this before, but since there is now a thread will again. Ive had encounters with a few tornadoes both from seeing them from home and from chasing them.
1st encounter : When I was about 6 years old my family witnessed "sisters" dancing around close to our home when we lived north close to the lake. Needless to say we spent many nights down in storm cellars and this day that the sisters hit it caused our ladder to dance on top of my parents car denting it up .
This one got me: Another one was when I knew from radar one was coming so I drove to 13 Hwy. and everything turned green and saw one crossing the Hwy north of town. I dropped my friend off and backtracked through the country and out of town where I met up with a storm spotter. We watched as the weather churned and then I proceeded back to my location. The storm came out of nowhere and came head on at me with no chance of turning around. It was at a 3 way intersection. I was stuck ! I tried to proceed but it was too late.Luckily it was a small one or I wouldn't be here. It damaged my car pretty bad. The people down the road were not as fortunate. It knocked over their silo in half and strung their roof across a field.
Another one was when we had one south of town . I sat and watched the clouds spinning around in circles for quite some time and then one came straight down and immediately went right back up. A weather spotter for a local radio station was there describing what I was seeing as it was happening.
Here at home on a calm day when nothing was in the forecast I looked out my dining room window and saw a single thunderhead come out of nowhere. At the base it was dancing around and "boiling". I got in my car, went to town, got my daughter, and we sat at a Mexican restaurant and watched the system come through. The guys from Guatemala had never seen anything like it and were amazed as we all just watched the system. It ended up going through Springfield south of us and taking out a house. These things are highly unpredictable at times.
I also was in what my dad called a "blue northern" in the 80's. This system came from the north on a day when there was nothing forecasted and came quick. Lightening ,hail, strong winds. On that day lightning hit a tree above a family members pickup and it came down and crushed the cab of the truck totalling it.
Now that we have camera's, Im going to try to video tape some of my chases. I do have some pics but not of tornadoes, but there are nimbo cumulus clouds in some of them and what I believe is a funnel taken about 2 years ago when I chased one to Buffalo where this first storm just hit this week. It was under a tornado warning at that time too but because I had someone with me, I didnt proceed further. I only do that when Im alone. I dont want to put anyone elses life in jeapordy.
