Glad they're safe Lois ! My fiance's son, and my former neighbor across the street were caught in the St. Louis storm last year also on their way to Illinois. They were on the phone describing flying debris to Kelly and had to pull over because they couldn't see. I remember that storm well,,it was during the night hrs. Ive mentioned this before, but since there is now a thread will again. Ive had encounters with a few tornadoes both from seeing them from home and from chasing them. 1st encounter : When I was about 6 years old my family witnessed "sisters" dancing around close to our home when we lived north close to the lake. Needless to say we spent many nights down in storm cellars and this day that the sisters hit it caused our ladder to dance on top of my parents car denting it up . This one got me: Another one was when I knew from radar one was coming so I drove to 13 Hwy. and everything turned green and saw one crossing the Hwy north of town. I dropped my friend off and backtracked through the country and out of town where I met up with a storm spotter. We watched as the weather churned and then I proceeded back to my location. The storm came out of nowhere and came head on at me with no chance of turning around. It was at a 3 way intersection. I was stuck ! I tried to proceed but it was too late.Luckily it was a small one or I wouldn't be here. It damaged my car pretty bad. The people down the road were not as fortunate. It knocked over their silo in half and strung their roof across a field. Another one was when we had one south of town . I sat and watched the clouds spinning around in circles for quite some time and then one came straight down and immediately went right back up. A weather spotter for a local radio station was there describing what I was seeing as it was happening. Here at home on a calm day when nothing was in the forecast I looked out my dining room window and saw a single thunderhead come out of nowhere. At the base it was dancing around and "boiling". I got in my car, went to town, got my daughter, and we sat at a Mexican restaurant and watched the system come through. The guys from Guatemala had never seen anything like it and were amazed as we all just watched the system. It ended up going through Springfield south of us and taking out a house. These things are highly unpredictable at times. I also was in what my dad called a "blue northern" in the 80's. This system came from the north on a day when there was nothing forecasted and came quick. Lightening ,hail, strong winds. On that day lightning hit a tree above a family members pickup and it came down and crushed the cab of the truck totalling it. Now that we have camera's, Im going to try to video tape some of my chases. I do have some pics but not of tornadoes, but there are nimbo cumulus clouds in some of them and what I believe is a funnel taken about 2 years ago when I chased one to Buffalo where this first storm just hit this week. It was under a tornado warning at that time too but because I had someone with me, I didnt proceed further. I only do that when Im alone. I dont want to put anyone elses life in jeapordy. Sounds like you have seen many, guess that is expected from where you live. It is called Tornado Ally . Do you know where Gravite and Decator Arkansas is. South of Joplin over the line. ? My parents had a farm there back in the 30s. Rogers may sound familiar to you. My Dad and him were partners in the Chicken business. They have a town named after him. After my Dad moved back up here , Rogers became a millionare.. Anyway he was across a few fields from the farmhouse. My Mother was home with five children. In which were born before me. I was born up here in Illiinois. She said the hollow wind was getting strong behind the house so she took my sisters and brothers out to a cave underground where she keep can goods she had made. She closed the door, and when they came out they could hear my Dad screaming, and as he approached running across the field.. they verily could recognize him. Every part of his body was straw blades pointing into his face. He looked like a yellow porky pine. . Must of been thousands of them. His clothing , which was bib overalls. His face had was covered completely and not one blade was in his eyes. All the trees looked the same as him. Thank God.. He thought my Mother would not go to the cave so he started running home from a neighbors. She said good Lord, don't you think I have any sense? She told this story many times. Yes they lived in Tornado Ally also. But this was the worse one in the 15 years they lived there. Joplin is also there. It was not so lucky as many come down in the country side, that one did not. Just like St. Louis. People here say Oh we will not get a tornado, one never hits Bloomington. Well they not know about the tornado way back when I was 6 or seven. One I mentioned above on a earlier post. You need to watch closely where you live. I'm sure you do. Glad you are ok and family also. It is early yet for the year, our worse month is April, and look how early this year they are coming.

Cliff, the only mad one we had when I lived down in cape occurred around 1995. My kids stopped by with their kids . Shamira was among them. When the got ready to leave I follow then out on the front porch, and as I glance to the West, there was a giant wall cloud so black it was unreal. It was not moving at all. The wind was so calm and still . I told them get back inside. That cloud is the one which came over me at six years old leaving Brownie class. They just told me Oh Mom you worry to much.. They were headed down the the river. All streets running east go down hill to the river. At the bottom it takes in a lot of rain. The gym was on main street where they were taking the kids that Saturday afternoon.
I went back inside and turned the TV on. Then the sirens went off. I headed for the basement praying to God the kids would come back around the block . they did not. When I went to the basement I got under the stair case which was on the North wall . I could here everything hitting the house. After a minute I decided to go around in front of the stairs as there was a window there .The short grass was at the bottom of the glass. My huge back yard was a lake nothing showing which was on the grass. There was a huge tree to my left which sat on the border line of my home.
I watched as lighting came down the tree splitting it in half all the way to the ground , I ducked and heard the crash, my yard was nothing but the tree laying across it to the West. I ran back under the stairs. That made me stay low for awhile.
When I came back up and went to the front door everything and anything was out on my large front porch. Swimming pool was against the door. I had no way of calling the kids as they had no cell phone at that time.
My husband that was out of town working to the North of Cape, was on his way home and the road into town was nothing but trees and objects.
Finally here comes the large van back. I sighed a huge relief. As they all came running up the walk . What was you saying Grandma as we left.. lol lol
They had got down on Main street and the cars were not moving. They were all bumper to bumper, my son in law was driving and the water was pouring in. They felt saver in the car so that is where they stayed, No where to run anyway. Lines came down on a car two ahead of them and the sparks were flying. Everyone stayed put til the firetrucks came to get the wire away. They did not go to the gym they came back to my home. Wonder why?
So now when they go anywhere even though I'm up here in Illinois, they will call me and ask weather man what will the weather be like we are going out of town. lol lol . 30 of them.. lol lol.
Now Shamira is marrying a meteorologist who works for Accu weather. I told her you guys don't need me down there you have Andrew now. They say Mom we are still calling you. lol lol

It is early yet for the year, our worse month is April, and look how early this year they are coming. Yep. Im familiar with that area. Gravette is where my church is Lois . Since they're a distance from me, I watch them on T.V. Kelly had family in Mena Arkansas but they live in Ft. Smith now. Weve went down there a couple times. Ive been there on many other occasion also seeing other family members and taking road trips. Arkansas is beautiful. I love the "mountains" as they call them. I call them foothills,,,lol ;D We were in Mena 2 years ago just a week after the tornado ripped through the center of that town. It was horrible ! It went right between 2 of Kellys sisters . Too close ! Others were not as fortunate,,,,,sad ! That was quite an experience you all had Lois,,,its ones like that you never forget. Im glad you all survived ! I had another experience here a few years back when I drove like crazy with my daughter and her fiance to the school to seek shelter. We had one trying to come down on top of us (f2 funnel)as I was racing trying to get to shelter but luckily it didnt hit the ground. There I met up with the guy who coordinates the spotters. Him and I watched one go right over my brother ( a spotter for the fire Dept.) about 3 miles away. It was an f3 . He had to roll the windows down slightly in his truck because of the pressure. Luckily he survived ! Our town has been fortunate since about the 70's when the last one came through. About every town around us has been recently hit. I keep telling everyone here that were overdue and they agree.

Glad to here Swampy !
We were concerned also for one of Kellys other sisters too. She lives southwest of Savannah ,Ga. and Florida, where she's from . Her family is almost as big as mine, lol. When the 1st storm came through Kelly had a kit prepared for the shelter but we didnt go. I counted on the radar and watched it close. I probably shouldn't have done that as bad (and close) as it got.

Cliff. Watch out for those storms west of you. The weather expert has the area in white just like he did last year for Joplin. He is always right when he puts the white on the map. Severe chance of tornado's . The storms stretch up into Iowa. So I will be under the gun tomorrow. He has not give us the white area yet. hopeful he does not.. JC . I keep forgetting where in Mo. you live. This may be near you. stay safe both of you.

Lois, if you type three question marks in a row with spaces around it it will do that confused smiley face automatically. It's a shortcut to make it.

Oh that is right Lorelei . thanks for reminding me. I have a habit of putting three questions marks all the time. It chose a stupid smiley for the statement I was putting down. I hate April.. it is very bad risk in the central states far as tornado's go.

Also I hate to be the one to say it. These storms out of Oklahoma is on a Northeast path which will take them right over Joplin again. That poor town does not need to see any more for a century. It is unlikely they would hit the same place twice so soon. But it is a unpredictable weather event. Then onto St Louis again, and then Central Illinois. It never changes. Some times they go East toward Cape and my kids, also Ron in Kentucky. Will be back here tomorrow with a report.

People living in parts of Oklahoma are being warned to prepare for what could be massive, long lived tornadoes. Conditions are right for supercells and those living in the midwestern United States should stay alert for weather updates. This could be bad folks ! My aunt lives in Oklahoma and they said there for everyone to be prepared for a bad one tonight . This outbreak will continue on through sunday throughout various sections of the central U.S.

First tornado hit oklahoma a little while ago. Not a real bad one yet. I can see them going up and east toward St. Louis now also. We will be next. Probably keep me up as I don't sleep if bad storms are a possibility ..Some times after leaving tornado alley down there they will weaken. Cliff I see nothing happening for you as of yet. They do not swing East til they get farther up into Mo.

Lightening has struck next to my home close by a couple times already. The power keeps flickering on and off. Its just a typical spring t-storm for now. Be safe out there !

Stay safe Lois!!!! I'll keep all of you in my thoughts. Thank you Citizen.. I watch the weather expert again awhile ago. He said Kansas was a 8 out of 10 chance for tornado's tomorrow. In other words it is not going to move east til Sunday. I will sleep tonight. I guess it is a slow moving cell . It is the area between the warm air line in red on the East and the blue cold air line on the West . Illinois is sandwich right in the middle Sunday. I believe most of Mo. is Sunday also. I will have to see what the weather man expert predicts for us. Hope it is not on the upper scale like 8 or 9 chance out of ten. 5 alone is bad enough.
