Haunted Old Port Boca Grande Lighthouse[/color]
April 22nd, 2012
Old Port Boca Grande Lighthouse stands at the end of Gasparilla Island off the coast of Florida, northwest of Fort Myers. Congress took $35,000 in 1888 to start construction on the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself was one story with a square tower extending from its roof. On top of the tower was a round lantern room housing the third and a half order Fresnel lens. Today the haunted Old Port Boca Grande Lighthouse is said to be home of two possible ghosts.
Also on the grounds there was an assistant keeper building and wooden storage tanks to supply water for the light house keepers. The lighthouse was officially put in service on the last day of December 1890. The lighthouse was continued to be run by keepers and their families until 1956 when it was automated. The lighthouse was abandoned in 1966 and a new modern light was affixed atop a tower further inland.
By the early 1970’s, erosion and vandalism was taken its toll on the old lighthouse. Residents came to its rescue in 1972 succeeded in getting ownership turned over from federal hands to local authorities and in 1980, the lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gasparilla Island Conservation and Improvement Association and the Department of Natural Resources combined to raise the money for restoration on the property and in 1986 the huge project was finished.
The U.S. Coast Guard added the final piece by reinstalling the original Fresnel lens in November of that year. The Old Port Boca Grande Lighthouse was now active again. In 1989 the Barrier Island Park Society was formed and started to establish a museum in the restored keeper’s house.
