The object, illustrated here, reportedly flew at a high rate of speed close to their planes. Why are UFOs dangerous? U.S. News & World Report is tackling that question in a special Mysteries of Space magazine that recently hit newsstands. Every year, thousands of UFO sightings from around the world are reported. And, as the magazine points out, about 95 percent of those reports are explained as ordinary things like military aircraft, balloons, misidentified astronomical objects -- such as planets or meteors -- and meteorological phenomena. That leaves 5 percent of unexplained UFOs -- but with so many reported, even 5 percent is pretty large. While the debate rages over whether some of the residual UFOs are interplanetary or interdimensional spacecraft, the magazine is exploring the potential danger of UFO encounters with commercial airline pilots. "Our objectives are to make flying safer for the public, and we're convinced there's a potential threat posed by nearby unexplained aerial phenomena to commercial and private airplanes," former UFO skeptic and NASA research scientist Richard Haines told The Huffington Post. Haines is currently the chief scientist of the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena, a private venue for pilots, crews and air traffic controllers who want to file UFO reports without fear of ridicule. "One encounter is where the airplane is flying along, minding its own business, usually on autopilot, when the phenomenon or phenomena will come alongside, approach the airplane, pace it, sometimes do maneuvers around it and then fly away," Haines said. "That's very important because it implies an intelligence behind the phenomena that is selecting the airplane as a focus of attention or interest," he added. Here is Billy Cox's take on the article..... Sarasota Herald-Tribune
De Void
Buy two gallons of regular unleaded insteadTuesday, May 1, 2012 at 10:55 by Billy Cox One of the most facile, meaningless, and inhibiting phrases in the lexicon of The Great Taboo — and we see it repeated time and again — is “UFO believers.” The term, with its implication of religious fervor, is often applied by debunkers as a pejorative swipe at researchers and practically anyone else who takes this stuff seriously. But in the hands of the mainstream media, which expeditiously employs the label in what passes for coverage, the damage is difficult to calculate. No doubt, it leaves an enduring cultural imprint. We see it once more in the latest special edition of U.S. News & World Report, devoted to “Mysteries of Space.” Although the topics are fairly traditional — astronomy, astronomy, commercialization, militarization, etc. — the zinger is a cover tease promising to reveal “Why UFOs Are Dangerous.” The ‘zine invests four of its 88 pages to The Great Taboo, and judging from his sourcing, reporter Michael Morella has put a lot of work into the piece. But he doesn’t know what to do with it. Rather than tell readers exactly Why UFOs Are Dangerous, Morella, like so many other MSM efforts to sample the entire buffet, has trouble with priorities and wastes valuable time and space indulging the rehash. Morella initially attempts to build his case on Leslie Kean’s UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record, then proceeds to get sidetracked on tangential cultural contexts and ancient history (wheee — we learn about Kenneth Arnold’s 1947 “flying saucer” sighting all over again). He even feels obliged to walk us back through the extensively covered 2009 UFO hoax perpetrated by Morristown, N.J., pranksters Joe Rudy and Chris Russo. This doesn’t help us understand Why UFOs Are Dangerous, but it gives Morella license to take a brief lunge at crop circles, “often held out by UFO buffs as markings left by alien craft.” Granted, freaks and paranoids inhabit every nook and cranny of human endeavor. But De Void is trying to recall the last time a radioastronomer combing the Milky Way for ET signals was referred to as a “buff” or “believer.” Yet, when the subject is UFOs, you can bank on semantic lines being drawn. When Morella refers to how Project Blue Book listed 700 UFO cases as unexplained, he just can’t resist: “That margin of mystery continues to thrill die-hard believers around the world …” What might thrill die-hard believers around the world even more — as well as closeted scientists for whom this sort of loaded language is radioactive — is the advertised discussion of Why UFOs Are Dangerous using data that’s a little more contemporary than 1969, when the USAF terminated Blue Book. Morella hints at it by sprinkling a few dramatic anecdotes of pilot/UFO encounters in his copy, but he doesn’t attempt to show us the money until the penultimate graph. The money belongs to the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena, which actually conducts research on flight-safety issues. Incomprehensibly, Morella neglects the payoff and fails to serve up any stats compiled in NARCAP studies such as Project Sphere, which brings Why UFOs Are Dangerous into a quantifiable context. Morella’s bitten off more than he can chew, and he probably knows it. What he needs is a wrap. This is as good as any: “As to the bigger issue of what actually is behind the largely unexplained incidents, or the possibility of extraterrestrial involvement,” Morella concludes, “the debate is unlikely to be settled soon.” Meaning, UFO believers and buffs who shelled out $7.99 ($8.99 in Canada) to learn Why UFOs Are Dangerous will have to figure it out for themselves. devoid.blogs.heraldtribune.com/13009/buy-two-gallons-of-regular-unleaded-instead/

There's not much to talk about when you bring up UFOs and the dangers they may cause. There really isn't any hard evidence suggesting anybody has been injured or killed as a result of unknown flying disks. It's unnerving that they are up there zipping around, but there's more evidence they have put us out of dangers way (Rumors of disarming missiles...) than in it. If you get your imagination churning you can't help but wonder how proactive the government might be if they were dangerous. Perhaps the reason they love covering up evidence of UFOs is because they know that whatever we don't know, won't hurt us. Hell, maybe if people started dying they'd fess up to some things. Not that I support that type of reasoning .

Actually one of the reasons the government gave for cancelling Project Blue Book was that even though some UFOs remained unidentified the phenomena did not seem to pose a threat to national security so they saw no need to continue investigating them. At least that is what some people said. behind the scenes they may very well have continued the investigations...but if so they aren't telling anybody.

I've always figured if they wanted the planet...it would be theirs. The only threat they seem to pose is to the ones they abduct and that varies from nightmares to more serious annoyances as with Lois..but nothing life threatening (that we know about). There are reports of missing persons..allegedly taken by space ships but there are missing person reports with no space ships. It IS and will always be (to me) disturbing that they hijack people and send them into a tail spin trying to figure it out years later..it's also disturbing that they seem to find us similar to a 'pet' mouse but they don't give me any sense of panic. We seem to be more of a threat to ourselves than they are

DANGEROUS UFOS Did you know that witnesses have reported damaged property and even personal injury after UFO sightings? Take a look at these stories of dangerous UFOs: science.howstuffworks.com/space/aliens-ufos/ufo-burn.htm

So why didn't the US News and World Report article talk about any of those things? If they are going to write an article about UFO dangers you would think that they would mention a few of them instead of just writing a generic article that anybody could have read on just about any UFO blog on the net.

The only time I consume the media is afte I have consumed too many cold beers and no longer can tell the difference between news and propoganda, which is all the "news media" is. I don't believe a word those clowns say.
