Ok - I'm hoping that we are a big enough group that some of you have taken MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). This is a sulfur compound that our bodies make out of vegies and which also occurs in shellfish and beef. It is marketed for joint pains (and that's why I bought a bottle, having a sore lower back and no appointment for physio until Sept 10th.)
I brought it home and did some Internet research. It's been around a long time as a food supplement. In addition to helping inflammed joints, it is touted as helping inflammation in general including allergic reactions, asthma, bronchitis, snoring, and a few articles suggested it helps regulate sugar metabolism. I went to the pharmacist and she read her professional guide and said although there haven't been any long-term tests, there are no reports of serious side effects. IMO there WON'T BE any long-term expensive testing because a bottle of 160 caplets costs around 20$. One Internet source said that race horse people give it to horses. Horses IMO do not exhibit a placebo effect (of believing in something and being helped by it.)
I took 2 pills last night. They suggest not taking it before bedtime and although I dozed off immediately in my husband's comfortable chair, I did notice I was chatty later than usual. This is what IMMEDIATELY OCCURRED TO ME:
My asthmatic constant clearing of my throat - stopped My wheezy bronchial stuff - disappeared My nose totally dried up - I slept with my MOUTH CLOSED and did not wake up parched, reaching for my water bottle during the night. My back? Well the immediate place still hurts some but all the pain in the surrounding muscles is gone. I was limping two days ago and one leg was partially numb. My doctor was considering sending me for an MRI. Now I'm down to a twoonie sized area of pain (silver dollar if anyone remembers those).
One more thing. I don't know why I bought it. No really I mean that. I do not buy herbal concoctions. I have in the past and felt nauseated and unhelped. I am unpatient. If the stuff doesn't work almost immediately, I'm not impressed. If I said I felt GUIDED to buy it....that sounds dramatic. Nevertheless I got the bottle home and thought - why did you buy that? I do go with intuition and that's definitely why I ended up with a bottle.
I've had my second dose today (once a day) and my nose and chest are unbelievably clear - no obstructions whatsoever.
I'd like to hear if other people have used this substance and if it worked for them (or didn't).

Oh! I thought this was a post on the main stream media!! ;D
I may have to try this for my allergies. The only way I can sleep is with one of those nasal strips holding my nose open.....

I'm horrible at taking any pills daily. Vitamins or whatever . I had bought a bottle of MSM about a year ago, and have been taking one every night before bed starting Aug. 14, 2012 (when school started up again). I also made a commitment to take a multivitamin at the same time. I take them at night because it's easier for me to remember then, and I figure it may stay in my body a little longer. I have the same results as you, but not as quickly ;D. The first time I ever tried it was on a "whim" and I found it in a liquid form. I remember seeing instant results with that.

Didn't do anything for my husband and his doctor did warn him off of it. Quality control isn't very stable in dietary supplements and it's relationship to dmso is a bit of a concern. DMSO is a 'carrier'. Used for arthritis and joint problems it also has the unique ability to carry anything through the skin into the blood stream We used to use it for the horses when we had one hard to medicate. Put the medicine in dmso and rub it on the jugular vein. There are only a few concerns for MSM right now..but the testing hasn't been very long.
This I found but there isn't really any strong warnings about it.
There is a controversy surrounding MSM. Though it is technically considered safe, Dr. Jacobs, a surgeon, determined that there are some side effects such as a strange taste in the mouth. Also, some people experience allergic-type side effects. Nausea, bloating, and fatigue are some of the side effects that have been reported
There are also some MSM heart side effects to be concerned with. If you have an existing heart condition, this could be a concern. Also, if you have conditions such as liver disease or on blood thinning drugs, you also need to be careful and consult with your doctor.

I've never tried MSM (or even heard of it for that matter) but I do know that sulfer has some amazing curative properties. The town I grew up in had some mineral water springs with sulfer being the main mineral and people used to come from all over the world to bathe and drink the stuff. The native Americans considered the place sacred because of the healing powers of the water. At one time it was a huge health resort before the economy collapsed and half the town was destroyed by floods and fires. Sulfer is a very common ingredient in medicines so apparently it really does work. If that is one of the main ingredients in MSM I would guess it probably is an effective medicine for a wide variety of ailments. I don't know about the other stuff that is in it though.

jokelly - thanks for the info. I am content to run an experiment on myself - 2000 mg. once a day with food. I have experienced no discernable side effects except my nose is completely clear and I can sleep with my mouth closed. And my asthma is lessened considerably. I wouldn't go on and on about this but will report back if I have to stop or something weird happens or if my lungs clear. I lay in bed and often hear gurgling and bubbling of air and it drives me crazy and frightens me. That's gunk between me and my oxygen exchange! Even with inhalers and such. Being able to breathe freely would be a miracle. PS.. Always liked James Coburn - who was impressed with DSMO. (he was mentioned on Dr. Jacobs' site)

I apologize, my post here wanders a bit off-topic, my only (weak) excuse is that I desire very greatly to be elsewhere as I write this...to be back home in Black Rock City BM....
My buddy, Parable, drinks DMSO, --he stinks like a chemical factory for several days when he does. He drinks it to help mediate his high-blood pressure. He claims that it helps him to 'think' also? Its my opinion that it just makes him stink! When he comes over to my place, I have to open all the windows, but it doesn't seem to hurt him?, and Parable has been drinking it for as long as I've known him these past 15 years. Lots of folks say DMSO is dangerous? Parable a retired medical researcher, says, "poppy-cock!"
Off...topic...but ya might find it interesting??
One stinking evening while Parable and I were hanging out at a cafe in Studio City, (an Los Angeles suburb), we were barn-storming ideas together, regarding my idea on how to make an art-car for Burning-Man. Burning Man, is a large adult camping (55,000ppl) style art festival held once a year in a alkaline talcom-powdery like, ancient sea-bed, hot in the day-time, cold at night, playa white-out dust storms so bad ya can't see a foot in front of ya...its just like camping in Hell. Nothing for sale nothing for barter. No stages. Electronica music goes 24hrs a day, everyday for 14 days. Burners are the entertainment, we bring everything. Its a gifting society, everything is free. And its way fun. I introduced Parable to Burning Man back in 2006, and invited him to camp with me that year as part of my (four RVs) Light-Chime camp. I present a large LED art structure at Burning-Man. Anyway, Parable and I cooked up plans for a two-wheel art-car, which Parable constructed, he has expended around $17,000 constructing it over four years. He did all the mechanical and welding himself. Its an electric art-car. He's at Burning-Man right now, I'd be there, but I can't afford the gas (for my 30' class A RV Burning-Man Tram), this year :((
Anyway, here's a photo of Parable's 'Cinderella Art Car', I think I took this photo in 2007 out in the middle of the playa?
Its wheeling around at Burning-Man right now. :))
If anyone is wondering, inside the tent area, is an 8ft wide, 15ft long bed, ya know, for hauling the girls around the playa!! Its a big swinging bed-room on wheels. Its really pretty at night with all the LEDs and EL Wire on the spokes. Parable did a great job making it. Oh, those wheels, well I'm 6'1" and my head is just under the axle, the wheels are ~15 ft diameter. Really kewl huh? It was all custom made by Parable, while I did a lot of the electrical design, Parable had a handyman/electrician do the actual electrical construction. Parable steers it using two joysticks, --one for each wheel. It goes forward, backward and does spins in place. It comfortably seats six people or two depending on orientation. Its a really fun ride. It gets about six hours of travel per charge. However, Parable does not drink DMSO while driving, thank Jupiter!

Sulfur is good. They used to use it as an antibiotic before mold like drugs were discovered... Sulfur is also the only acne medication that works on my acne. That benzoyl peroxide stuff (procative and others like it) do not work on me at all... ~shrug~

It does stink though, like plutronus said. Sulfer has kind of a rotten egg smell to it. Don't know if this MSM stuff does but I suppose it could make a person smell kind of ripe in large doses. Something to consider anyway.

No smell (yet). No taste while swallowing pills. No aftertaste. But I am using MSM NOT DSMO. DSMO goes through the skin, taking any dirt or foreign material with it (pretty cool and pretty scary).

Update: MSM. I forgot to take my MSM for a 24 hour period recently. Result? my nose clogged up and my asthma worsened. Took the next dose a little early. Result? my nose cleared up and my asthma suddenly cleared. I can spray the various prescription sprays into my bronchio/lung area and the medicine actually gets to the bottom of things. So I am clearer and I don't make the annoying repetitive ah HEM! noises. All the time...
Did I mention my gut.? Might as well. Every since I went to Mexico in 2006 and licked my lips after swimming in the bay of Puerto Vallerta - I have not been able to happily digest milk, cream cheese, or soft cheese. Also hot peppers (a life-long favorite). Bummer bummer bummer.
I would have (don't read this if you're squeemish) alternating conditions. You know.
So now after taking MSM I don't have that. I haven't tried eating the offending products in any LARGE quantities but I sense that my insides had been inflammed and damaged by the infection) I had and took antibiotics for. I have read that once one loses the ...hmmm....enzemes to digest something...one can't get it back. And so my insides (I'm being delicate here) were constantly inflammed. Which I believe mine were. And so...
After taking MSM.....Is that things seem happy and uneventful in my lower parts. I am gradually introducing various substances.
I asked my physiotherapist about MSM and she said, "When it works it really works." Apparently I am one of the lucky ones.
