CREDIT: EPIX NEW YORK – For a few hours on Saturday night (July 30), the decommissioned aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Intrepid took not to the seas again, but to the stars. In command: William Shatner, "Star Trek" Captain James T. Kirk, whose new documentary "The Captains" aired to a packed crowd on the flight deck of the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum. In the film, the former starship Enterprise captain goes on a mission of personal rather than cosmic exploration. Despite a long and award-winning acting career, Shatner's most prominent role by far remains Kirk. To try to understand how the character has shaped his life, and vice versa, Shatner visits the five actors who also played lead captain roles in the "Star Trek" franchise's television series and films. What unfolds is a series of intimate interviews that discuss how the actors dealt with the demands of the role, what being captain meant and how they ever got into acting at all. [See photos from the New York screening] "My hope is to delve deeply into these actors' psyches, find out more about them so you can . . . see what common denominator there is among us as actors that brought [us] to this worldwide renown as part of 'Star Trek,'" Shatner explained in a statement. A full crew complement An all-ages crowd of more than a thousand people attended the weekend event, some of whom waited on line for two hours or more to get on board the Intrepid. Making this particular site all the more poignant is that the "actual" starship Enterprise – NASA's first prototype space shuttle that was used in landing and glide tests in the late 1970s, and was named after the sci-fi vessel – will soon be housed at the museum. A costume contest was held for the many dozens of people who donned Starfleet uniforms and other "Star Trek" paraphernalia. One woman even wore a homemade, light-up model of the starship Enterprise atop her head. [The Top 10 Star Trek Technologies] After the sun set, Shatner himself appeared on the deck. The aircraft carrier is much like the Enterprise in size, Shatner suggested, so "you're the crew," he said to cheers from the audience. With the "soft summer weather," the New York skyline, the ship and the film, Shatner said "it's a magical night – enjoy it." Guess there is no such thing as graceful retirement. He was terribly upset when the new Star Trek movie came out and they offered him a small part in it. Nimoy took his part and was thrilled to do it..not Shatner. He refused it then spread the rumor that no one asked him. Very sad.

Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard will go boldy into near-space for real —in action figure form. A group of Trekkies has banded together to launch dolls of the two starship captains, as well as other key Trek characters and models of Star Trek spacecraft, to the edge of space using a high-altitude balloon. "Picard and Kirk are the greatest starship captains ever to exist and they've never been to space in reality, so I think it's about time we bring them there," said Logan Kugler, an entrepreneur and space enthusiast who launched a campaign on the crowd-funding site Kickstarter to raise money for the project. Kugler and his collaborators raised $6,193 through Kickstarter. They plan to use the money to loft six action figures, two starship models and five cameras to about 120,000 feet (37,000 meters) inside a balloon lifting off from Champaign, Ill. The team is using a pure latex Kaymont balloon to make the roughly three-hour flight to the edge of space and back. The launch is slated for May 5. The project is a labor of love for Kugler and his teammates. "I'm a huge Star Trek fan, of course; I've seen almost 500 episodes, every movie," Kugler told SPACE.com. "I personally believe at some point in the future the world we see in Star Trek is going to become a reality and every step closer we get to that is very interesting and fun. This is an insignificant step, it's just fun, but it's that symbolic representation." [The Evolution of 'Star Trek' (Infographic)] In addition to the Kirk and Picard dolls, which represent the captains of the original 1960s "Star Trek" television series and the 1987-1994 "Star Trek: The Next Generation," respectively, the balloon will carry figures of Next Generation commander William Riker and the android Data. The two captains will be placed atop models of their respective starships, Picard's USS Enterprise-D and Kirk's NCC-1701. The last StarDump movie was a stinker, replete with a bad storyline, plot faults and faulty science. Gene Roddenberry wasn't a party in its design, he alway's kept the science good. This next StarDump movie is about war, death, destruction and revenge. That sound like good StarTrek theme to you?
Where have all the artists gone?

Guess there is no such thing as graceful retirement. He was terribly upset when the new Star Trek movie came out and they offered him a small part in it. Nimoy took his part and was thrilled to do it..not Shatner. He refused it then spread the rumor that no one asked him. Very sad. Hi,
There's a little cafe in Studio City California, which is a popular hangout for Hollywood people in the biz. I ate dinner there every-night, for two years when I was working in the area. I've seen and met lots of directors, writers, and TV/movie stars there. To name a few, one which was a fantastic treat, as she was sooo beautiful, Elizabeth Taylor. Folks, she was in her 70s and frankly she looked 40 and good, and she was very nice to me. I also met the two leading female stars from the TV show Alien Nation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_Nation_%281989_TV_series%29, Michele Scarabelli (played Newcomer 'Susan Francisco') and Terri Treas (played Newcomer Cathy Frankel).
And then, I met Leonard Nimoy. He's a gentleman, well spoken, well educated. It was a pleasure chatting with him that one time, contrasted with having met Wm Shatner. I met Mr. Shatner first and then a year later, Leonard Nimoy, they were not together. I received an impression that they weren't friends. Wm Shatner, I suspect is an Aquarian or a Leo?, in any case, its **ALL** about him!!! baybee!
And short and fat now. I almost did not recognize him. Its incredible, in StarTrek production they always filmed him in a manner to equalize his runted stature, apparently, as on TV he always seemed equal height with that of the other actors. Nimoy, who is taller yet they seemed to be the same height on the show? The first time I saw Shatner, he was there making a deal for his short-lived late-night actor interview show, which I watched a few times. The show was not very good. Shatner enjoys doing all the talking and it seemed to me, that he had an edginess in his demeanor that seemed to rub the guests wrongly? A few months after seeing him that first time, it was on a Saturnday evening, I was with a gal-pal. We stopped into the cafe for a light salmon salad dinner, before going all-night dancing at an underground Burning-Man techno dance party. We saw Shatner in the reading room of the cafe. Apparently he had just completed a business meeting there and the other party had just departed. Our tables were adjacent. My dance date, (I did her Astrology a few years ago, back when she was a beginning Hollywood starlet and since then we've become friends). Anyway, my pal is slender, tall, long natural blond hair, has pretty green eyes...she's very pretty gal. She was wearing a bright red low-cut sweater and tight Armani Jeans...was dressed to kill. Shatner leaned over and started a conversation with her. That was how we became acquainted. To be fair, Wm Shatner is an interesting fellow and he's done a lot of Hollywood work. He and my friend yakked mainly about Hollywood biz yada-yada. I got a few words in edgewise. One of the things that I've always admired about him, and that I've heard around town also from others, 'Wm Shatner is always working', gotta hand it to him. But frankly its hard to see Capt Kirk as a self centric, short fat guy. He was interesting to listen to and he was charming too.

I liked the last Star Movie. me too... Hey...I did not say that I didn't enjoy the movie, it was entertaining, once I got over the shock of realizing that it failed to live up to the good StarTrek reputation one has become accustomed to seeing.
It was stinky science-fiction from the good future-science-fiction that StarTrek had become noted for being. That last movie was a run of the mill typical bad science, future-fiction movie with a so-so plot. 'Independence Day' was the same way, I mean, how many ET craft can't stop on a dime? Yet that's how Will Smith caused the crash of the alien craft that was trying to shoot down his jet, by ejecting a parachute over the craft just in front of a mountain cliff. The alien craft wasn't able to see through the parachute, and couldn't stop in time! While in reality, Alien craft run right-angle squares around Earthian jets. They can neutralize and isolate specific circuits on a single power-bus without affecting other portions of circuits. They can turn off RADAR screens, turn on, unplugged TV sets, disable rocket-launchers, or anything that they care to, including disabling the ignition systems of jet-engines. They can down an Earthian jet without shooting anything.
And did ya ever wonder where the parachute popped out of? Was it a spare chute? In a single seat jet? And those jets don't use chutes for slow-down, as they have thrust reversers and when they need to stop quickly, they use speed arresters on the runways. (just bad movie technology) That kind of stuff drives me crazy. Once I was able to get over the bad science, the flawed technology, and the stinky script, well, the movie was entertaining.
And what about that tube? Remember Kirk in the in the pipe? He would have drowned and since when are sewer pipes transparent? Guess on a starship the ship's mechanics need to see what folks poop looks like? They must've been really advanced in that time period, as none of it was brown! Heh heh heh, just the writing!

What do you suppose an alien invasion movie would look like if they used actual reported UFO technology in the plot? I can just see it now... "Oh my god! The aliens are invading! We've got to stop them!" Zaaaapp!!The End

www.space.com/19110-starship-enterprise-white-house-petition.htmlEngineer Petitions White House for Real-Life Starship Enterpriseby Clara Moskowitz, SPACE.com Assistant Managing Editor Date: 04 January 2013 An engineer is petitioning the White House to study the possibility of building a real-life starship Enterprise like the fictional vessel in television's "Star Trek." The proposal was submitted through the White House's official "We the People" channel, which promises an administration response to any petition that gathers at least 25,000 signatures. Just last month, a petition to build a Death Star like the spherical spaceship in the movie "Star Wars" garnered that critical mass, and is currently awaiting its official response. The Enterprise proposal comes from an engineer who goes by the name BTE Dan, who detailed plans for constructing a life-size, flyable starship Enterprise on his website last year. www.space.com/16398-could-star-trek-enterprise-be-built.html "We have within our technological reach the ability to build the 1st generation of the USS Enterprise," BTE Dan wrote in the petition, viewable here. As of this writing, the petition had 3,335 signatures, with more than 21,000 to go. The project, BTE Dan maintains, wouldn't be a vanity exercise, but rather a practical step forward for space exploration. [The Top 10 Star Trek Technologies] "It ends up that this ship's inspiring form is quite functional," he wrote. "This will be Earth's first gigawatt-class interplanetary spaceship with artificial gravity. The ship can serve as a spaceship, space station, and space port all in one. In total, one thousand crew members & visitors can be on board at once." Some experts have questioned the feasibility of certain aspects of BTE Dan's plan — for example, no technology for artificial gravity currently exists, and the largest number of people ever accommodated on any space vehicle until now has been 13 (when the shuttle Discovery docked to the International Space Station in April 2010). Star Trek & Open LinesDate: 05-10-13 Host: George Noory Guests: Stephen Schochet, Open Lines In the first half of Friday's program, author and Hollywood tour guide Stephen Schochet shared inside details about the Star Trek franchise. Gene Roddenberry's breakthrough television series was set hundreds of years into the future where people of different races could be shown working together on difficult social/ethical issues (of the present), he explained. It was not an initial ratings success, Schochet continued, noting that after cancellation the show found its audience and became a hit in syndication. Unlike other franchises, J.J. Abrams' 2009 movie version acknowledged the original show's canon before embarking in a new direction with those characters, he said, expressing excitement for the upcoming sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. According to Schochet, Roddenberry based his iconic Star Trek character Mr. Spock on LAPD Chief William H. Parker, who was known for his rational and seemingly emotionless behavior. When larger-than-life actor William Shatner was brought in to replace Jeffrey Hunter as captain of the Enterprise it allowed Leonard Nimoy to tone down his portrayal of Spock, he added. Schochet also spoke about how Steven Spielbergs production plagued Jaws ushered in the era of big budget effects-driven blockbusters, his love for variety television like The Carol Burnett Show, reality versus scripted programming, Internet series binge-watching, and how Hollywood seems to have shifted the focus of major productions toward concept over star power. That fascination has continued to the present day, as the latest installment of the science-fiction franchise, "Star Trek Into Darkness," opens in the US on May 16, 2013. I absolutely loved Star Trek Into Darkness. As a fan of the first movie, and a longtime casual fan of the franchise in general (my father obsessively watched re-runs of the original series while I was growing up, so I can probably quote most of it), I thought it found a great way to do nostalgia, action, drama, heartfelt moments, comedy, and move the franchise forward – even better than the first Abrams Star Trek film. Ultimately, that’s all you can really want from a sequel, and something you very rarely get – it was better than the first in virtually every way. [Enterprise Flies Again in "Star Trek Into Darkness" (Photos)] www.space.com/18943-star-trek-into-darkness-photos.htmlWithout getting into any spoilers, Benedict Cumberbatch’s villain John Harrison was engaging. There’s a cold calculation that was missing from the first film’s constantly-furious villain. His quiet, calm demeanor pulls you in so that when he unleashes, you’re right there in his face, and the burst of anger hits you just as hard as his punches. It’s hard to fully explain without any spoilers, but as much fun as Sherlock is, Into Darkness makes me want to see Cumberbatch as nothing but villains for the rest of his career CONTINUE READING: www.space.com/21174-star-trek-into-darkness-review-the-cure-for-sequelitis.html?cmpid=514648Paramount released this cool “Star Trek: Into Darkness” poster showing an ominous crash. news.sky.com/story/1106409/star-trek-stars-ashes-to-head-into-spaceStar Trek Star's Ashes To Head Into SpaceThe final frontier beckons for Scotty as his remains are set to head into orbit alongside the show's original creator.UK, Friday 21 June 2013 James Doohan's character sparked the line "Beam me up, Scotty" The remains of the creator of Star Trek and the ashes of the actor who played Scotty are to blast off into space. The ashes of Gene Roddenberry, who conceived the original 1960s TV series, will head for the final frontier alongside those of James Doohan, who played the starship Enterprise's Scottish engineer. Roddenberry's ashes will also be accompanied by those of his wife on the November 2014 launch by memorial spaceflight company Celestis. They will be part of a cargo that includes other cremated remains, written messages and samples of DNA in capsules sent by the general public. "What's very cool about this is that it's science fiction meeting reality," said Celestis spokeswoman Pazia Schonfeld. The remains will travel on a spacecraft called a solar sail, which is powered by sunlight and made to withstand high temperatures, and will head for orbit around the Sun, according to the company. The ashes of Gene Roddenberry and his wife Majel will blast off next year The journey will be captured by on-board cameras on and streamed online. It will not be the first time the remains of Roddenberry, who died in October 1991 at age 70, and Doohan, who was 85 when he died in 2005, have been into space. Roddenberry was part of Celestis' inaugural flight in 1997, when his remains were taken on a trip into space before returning to Earth. An urn containing some of Doohan's remains was also sent into space in 2012. Doohan became identified with the phrase "Beam me up, Scotty" in reference to the constant requests for him to bring people back on board the Enterprise. The phrase was never actually uttered on the cult show. There is still room on the space flight, with the price for sending a loved-one's ashes into orbit starting at $12,500 (£8,057). "We might have craters called Sulu and Spock and Kirk and McCoy and so on," Mark Showalter of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute in Mountain View, Calif., said during a Google+ Hangout yesterday (July 2). Showalter headed up the team that used NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to discover Pluto's two smallest known moons, which were announced in 2011 and 2012. The names of the two smallest known moons, previously referred to as "P4" and "P5", have been formally approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). P4 has been named Kerberos, after the three-headed dog of Greek mythology. P5 has been named Styx, after the mythological river that separates the world of the living from the realm of the dead. The moons join Pluto's previously known moons Charon, Nix and Hydra. According to IAU rules, Pluto's moons are named for characters associated with the Underworld of Greek and Roman mythology. Dr. Mark Showalter, Senior Research Scientist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, led the team of astronomers in the discoveries of Kerberos and Styx. Both were first seen in lengthy exposures of the Pluto system taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. These images were obtained in support of NASA's New Horizons mission, which will fly past Pluto in July 2015. Kerberos was discovered in 2011 and Styx in 2012. www.vulture.com/2013/09/patrick-stewart-sunny-ozell-wedding-ian-mckellen.html9-18-2013 PATRICK STEWART TIES THE KNOT Patrick Stewart’s Wedding Details: ‘Everyone Was Really, Properly Drunk’ By Sally Kohn Yesterday Patrick Stewart — thespian, Knight Bachelor, recent Brooklynite, and pizza-slice neophyte — released the above photo of his recent nuptials with longtime girlfriend Sunny Ozell. I was talking with Stewart and Ozell Sunday for a forthcoming profile of the actor in New York Magazine and pried loose some details about the intimate Lake Tahoe ceremony, held September 7 and officiated by X-Men compatriot Ian McKellen. The ceremony was held on the banks of Lake Tahoe in Nevada, near where Ozell grew up. "The water was lapping almost against our feet,” said Stewart. “Our photographer took a tumble, and literally if he’d been standing on the other side of us, he would have ended up in the lake.” The location happily remained a well-kept, paparazzi-free secret, even if the ceremony itself was not. “We have Ian to thank for letting the cat out of the bag in the first place,” said Stewart, referring to a TV interview in which McKellen said he would be “marrying Patrick.” “But he also put down the wrong scent.” In the interview, McKellen alluded to doing so “in Massachusetts, or in the middle of America somewhere.” “I like to imagine hordes of paparazzi scouring Massachusetts and having a really miserable afternoon looking for signs of a wedding,” said Stewart, letting out a roar of laughter and glancing sweetly over his shoulder toward his new wife. As seen in the photograph, Ozell, a singer, wore an elegant white lace gown, while Stewart wore a gray suit, custom made just for the ceremony. But both Stewart and Ozell agreed that the best outfit might have belonged to the always dapper McKellen, who wore a gray three-piece suit. ("Were our grays too similar?" asked Stewart after the fact.) McKellen also initially sported a straw Panama hat, which he playfully tossed off at the beginning of the ceremony. McKellen, said Stewart, created a tone of “relaxed, spontaneous informality.” “His remarks were not only full of wisdom and humor and poetry but knowledge of the two of us,” Stewart said. “He got a little choked up at one point,” added Ozell. “There wasn’t a person there who didn’t,” said Stewart. “I certainly did.” CONTINUE READING: www.vulture.com/2013/09/patrick-stewart-sunny-ozell-wedding-ian-mckellen.html

“Beam Me Up Scotty” was Never Said in the Original Star Trekby Karl Smallwood October 10, 2013 Just like when we told you, Sherlock Holmes never said, “Elementary, my dear Watson“, today we’re going to blow your mind by telling that nowhere, in the entirety of the original Star Trek, were the words, “Beam me up, Scotty” ever uttered. They did come close several times, such as in the 1969 episode of the original series, The Savage Curtain, Kirk says, “Scotty, beam us up, fast!“. Likewise, in the 1968 episode, The Gamesters of Triskelion, Kirk simply says, “Beam us up“. Kirk came closer still in the 1967 episode, This Side of Paradise, in which he says “beam me up“. And finally, the closest Kirk ever came to saying that phrase was in Star Trek IV: The Journey Home, in which he says, “Scotty, beam me up“. The only place you’ll find the line in somewhat official cannon is in The Ashes of Eden (1996), a novel co-written by William Shatner as part of the so-called, “Shatnerverse” of the Star Trek- none of which are we making up. Even then, the novels Shatner wrote are disputed in terms of how “canon” they are; so there’s that. In popular culture, of course, the line is universally and intrinsically linked with the show. How did this start, you ask? Nobody really knows. There is a theory that these types of movie/TV misquotations, of which there are many, are often remembered that way simply because they sound smoother than the actual quote. For example, “Beam me up, Scotty” flows better than “Beam us up, Mr Scott“. Factor this in with many years of proliferation and eventually a misquotation can become so popular, William Shatner will put it into one of his novels. Interestingly, this quote almost never was. This may surprise you considering the quality of Shatner’s hairline, but the original Star Trek series didn’t have a very big budget- which if we’re being honest goes a long way towards explaining why everyone wore the exact same outfit all the time… The budget was so low, in fact, that there was no room in it for showing a giant spaceship landing (originally they planned on having the whole Enterprise land on alien planets). After presumably double checking Shatner’s food budget, the crew realised they’d have to come up with a way of getting the cast onto an alien planet without breaking the bank, which is where the Transporter came in.
