This evening, an asteroid the length of three football fields will buzz by Earth at a rate of 7 miles per second. The asteroid called 2012 QG42 is about to get its close-up. A month ago, scientists weren't even aware it existed. But it's now on the radar, and viewers can watch it pass by Earth from the convenience of the Web. No astronomy lessons necessary. Although tonight's flyby is harmless, the asteroid has been named "potentially hazardous" by the Minor Planet Center. That means it's not dangerous, at least not yet. But it could pose problems in the future. MORE: news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/live-asteroid-fly-earth-tonight-210210339.html

That's a big rock if it ever plows into us. I'm assuming it is orbiting the sun so I wonder how long it will take for it to come back around again? We may get a much closer look at it in the future. Speaking of asteroids I saw a really cool meteor last night while I was out running. It was big and green and kind of weaved a little as it came down and there were little orange sparks shooting off of it. It wasn't moving superduper fast neither so it lasted about 3 seconds total. I thought it was very cool. Maybe the one I saw was the big rock's little brother.

2012 TC4 Makes a Near Pass Oct. 12th :
On Oct. 12th another near Earth asteroid will make a close flyby of Earth. It's called 2012 TC4 and will come within 0.2 LD (Lunar distance) from Earth which is pretty close , astronomically speaking. The large, fast moving rock is 22 meters in diameter.
Another one , 2012 TV which is 40M in diameter, skimmed by Earth yesterday (Oct.7) at 0.7 Ld. These Asteroids were discovered this year.

There seems to be lots of these close fly-bys lately and they aren't being discovered until they are almost upon us. Are we flying into an asteroid belt or something? Should I call that Harold dude and tell him to start making his doomsday predictions again?

Some big target painted on the planet and the universe is lobbing big marbles at us?

Apparently there were Northern Lights in Alberta and fainter ones near to me. I did get up at 4:30am and looked for falling stars (Draconid meteorites). Saw stars and the moon. No meteors, no northern lights. Maybe if I had driven out of town....

Also,,,Io is in the process of making a transit in front of Jupiter and the beautiful great red spot is also showing on the planet ,,, the ISS will be flying overhead again with the Dragon attached which will be extremely bright tonight,,,comet 168P/Hergenrother is still within reach of my telescope,,, Ive fortunately seen it twice now,,,there's still some leftover Draconids and Orionids have begun flaring,,, but it's cloudy,,, again. ARGH

Closest asteroid in recorded history to pass Earth Tuesday, 30 October 2012
by Lucie Bradley SYDNEY: An asteroid the size of a city block is due to come whizzing past Earth in February next year, closer than any other of its size in recorded history, according to astronomers. The asteroid, referred to as 2012 DA14, has a diameter of approximately 45m and an estimated mass of 130,000 tonnes. It was discovered at the start of 2012 and is set to travel between the Earth and our geostationary communication satellites on 15 February 2013. At a distance of just 22,500km this will be the closest asteroid ‘fly by’ in recorded history Read More : www.cosmosmagazine.com/news/6114/closest-asteroid-recorded-history-pass-earthCliff

45 meters? That's a big rock. We are going to have to keep our eyes open for that one. These things are really starting to get close.

45 meters? That's a big rock. We are going to have to keep our eyes open for that one. These things are really starting to get close. Far too close ! The possibility of a collision with a geosat is probably minimal but for this object to gravitationally affect some of their orbits is a little higher. Hopefully their isn't any other bodies gravitationally attached to this asteroid nearby. I also hope it is solid enough to not break up when encountering Earth's gravitational field. It is far too close for comfort and it seems there have been many near misses lately but that may be a common ocurrance that we are just now aware of because of our recent advances in our ability to discover them. The altering of it's orbit could be a factor also when this object comes back the next time around but hopefully it wont enter that window of concern. Cliff
