Meteor Shower Created by Halley’s Comet Peaks This Week by Mike Wall, SPACE.com Senior Writer Date: 16 October 2012 Time: 09:00 AM ET A meteor shower spawned by history’s most famous comet will peak this weekend, and the show could be dazzling for observers with clear skies, experts say. The Orionid meteor shower will reach its zenith overnight from Saturday to Sunday (Oct. 20-21) as Earth plows through debris shed by Halley’s Comet on its path around the sun. The most impressive display should come a few hours before dawn Sunday, when our planet hits the densest patch of Halley’s detritus. "Flakes of comet dust hitting the atmosphere should give us dozens of meteors per hour," Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA’s Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., said in a statement. Tonight I watched a few of these meteors fly through the sky and they are beautiful fireballs. It isn't one of the best meteor showers of the year, but if you're up late Saturday night or wake up early Sunday morning with clear skies you may want to step out and look up in the Southeast high overhead and wait a few minutes to catch one or two. They are amazing to see. Happy viewing ! Update : Wow ! This meteor shower is really getting active ! It is 5:15 a.m. here and in the south high up overhead the meteors are streaking . It is much better than I expected. I can't wait to see what they do tomorrow morning if it isn't cloudy. In just 5 minutes time I saw 4 for reference! That's quite a bit. Ive seen many since. A must see under dark sky conditions. Enjoy everyone !! ~~~~ sooo cool
