They Came From Outer Space
By Lee Irwin Pringle
There are many theories out there regarding exactly where our ‘alien’ visitors come from and the subject really does need more investigation. We assume they come from outer space, but is this really the case? This article takes a look at some of our alien friends possible home worlds.
the red planet
At the turn of the 20th century it was thought there might be people living on the planet Mars. Percival Lowell, an astronomer at the time published Mars and its canals (1906) and Mars as The abode of life (1908) where he wrote that the planet Mars was home to a bustling alien civilization, conclusions he drew from observations of the surface of Mars where he thought he could see Martian canals. So utterly convinced was he, that in 1894 he addressed the Boston Scientific Society with the following:
“Speculation has been singularly fruitful as to what these markings on our next to nearest neighbour in space may mean. Each astronomer holds a different pet theory on the subject, and pooh-poohs those of all the others. Nevertheless, the most self-evident explanation from the markings themselves is probably the true one; namely, that in them we are looking upon the result of the work of some sort of intelligent beings. . . . The amazing blue network on Mars hints that one planet besides our own is actually inhabited now.” — Percival Lowell, address to the Boston Scientific Society, 22 May 1894
It was only four years later that H.G.Wells published his world famous War of the Worlds, telling of a Martian invasion of Earth.
As the 20th Century advanced, we discovered there wasn’t a vast alien civilization on Mars after all (as far as we know, anyway) and the canals Percival saw were merely an optical illusion and never existed. This doesn’t mean there wasn’t at one point life on Mars, if you believe the “face” on Mars is real, it could mean the alien civilization died out, migrated or went underground millennia ago. It doesn’t mean that even at the very least there couldn’t be bacterial life on there now. But if we are to find our grey-skinned visitors homeworld, then I guess we need to look elsewhere in the Universe.
George Adamski and the Venusians
On October 9th 1946, George Adamski claimed to have seen a cigar-shaped mother ship crossing over the moon. This event was the beginning of a whole series of experiences culminating with the meeting with a being named Orthon who claimed to be a member of an alien civilization from the planet Venus. Orthon was described as having blond hair and tanned skin (strangely, a lot of the more modern alien sightings describe similar blonde beings) and he communicated to George telepathically. They both then went for a tour of the solar system and this is when the being explained he was from Venus. George managed to take several photographs of the visitor’s craft (see left).
It’s hard to take his claims seriously however, particularly in light of our knowledge of the planet Venus, with its toxic atmosphere and high surface temperature (which is actually higher than that of the Suns nearest neighbour, Mercury). His most famous photograph of one of the Venusian craft turned out to be nothing more than a street light. Looks like we can dismiss Venus then, too?
Betty Hill and The Star Map
It was not until 1961, that the modern era of alien abductions began, with the reports of Betty and Barney Hill propelling them into UFOlore and the history books. On the night of 19th-20th September 1961, they both claim to have been taken from their car aboard a ship occupied by numerous humanoid beings. After the incident, the couple went to see a hypnotherapist who during the sessions managed to get a map. Betty Hill remembered being shown a star map by her captors and was asked by these beings to locate Earth. As she wasn’t an astronomer herself and had no knowledge on the subject she could not. Fortunately, Betty was able to reconstruct the map during hypnosis. An amateur astronomer named Marjorie Fish took notice of the case and worked out after several years of research that the map could only have been drawn from the viewpoint of a planet orbiting one of the stars in the twin star system of Zeta Reticuli. This star system is approximately 39 light years away from Earth. The system consists of two stars, called Zeta1 Reticuli and Zeta2 Reticuli which orbit around one another.
What is also interesting is that these two stars are almost identical to our own Sun and have been classed similarly by astronomers. Scientists have yet to find any planets orbiting either of these stars but I’m confident they will do in time. There is an interesting story though, one which unfortunately cannot be corroborated, that the European Southern Observatory, which at the time was busy looking for other planets in our galaxy successfully detected a planet orbiting one of these stars referred to as Zeta2 Reticuli. This was one star in a list of 30 which had candidate planets around them and within 48 hours of the observatory finding a planet orbiting Zeta2 Reticuli this list was revised and Zeta2 Reticuli was missing from the list, the observatory claiming the results were inaccurate or they weren’t certain of the results. An interesting coincidence or was it removed for a reason?
Whether you believe his story or not, so-called former S4 (based at Area 51) scientist Bob Lazar claimed that while working on recovered (or given) extraterrestrial craft he was informed that the craft originated from a planet in the Zeta Reticuli binary star system. Of course, he could have heard of the Barney and Betty Hill story and simply used that to continue the myth, so I guess it’s up to us to make our own decisions. But with the ESO allegedly finding a planet around Zeta2 Reticuli and then quickly dismissing it and brushing it under the carpet, Betty Hill who if we are to believe her story had no knowledge of astronomy yet drew a map from the viewpoint of Zeta Reticuli and with a former S4 worker collaborating all of this, it looks like Zeta Reticuli might be a great place to start.
To Conclude
There is so little evidence supporting the idea that our visitors are from another planet that it’s interesting that we assume they do so. It could be to do with the fact that they always descend and ascend from the sky I suppose, so we instantly make that assumption but what if we’re wrong? What if they are only trying to deceive us, to give the impression they are from another planet? Unless they have some kind of exotic alien technology it would take hundred maybe thousands of years to travel to Earth from Zeta Reticuli. Even at the speed of light it would be a 78 years round trip. Also, it could be that the aliens were just visiting that star system, they might not originate from there at all.
It’s wise that we look at all possibilities before assuming we know everything about them. If they’re anything like us, it would be a big mistake to take anything at face value.
