CIA acknowledges existence of Area 51 in declassified documentsPublished August 16, 2013 The CIA has acknowledged the existence of Area 51 in newly declassified documents detailing the previously unacknowledged area in the Nevada desert. George Washington University's National Security Archive obtained a CIA history of the U-2 spy plane program through a public records request and released it Thursday. National Security Archive senior fellow Jeffrey Richelson reviewed the history in 2002, but all mentions of Area 51 had been redacted. Richelson said he requested the history again in 2005 and received a version a few weeks ago with mentions of the aircraft testing site restored. The Las Vegas Sun reports that the first military planes arrived at Area 51 on July 25, 1955, and the first taxi trials began two days later. The first test flight occurred on Aug. 4, 1955, according to the history. “It marks an end of official secrecy about the facts of Area 51,” Richelson told the Las Vegas Sun. “It opens up the possibility that future accounts of this and other aerial projects will be less redacted, more fully explained in terms of their presence in Area 51.” Officials have already acknowledged in passing the existence of the facility in central Nevada where the government is believed to test intelligence tools and weapons. Richelson believes the new document shows the CIA is becoming less secretive about Area 51's existence, if not about what goes on there. They also developed and tested the SR-71 at the facility. As a child in the early 1970s, I lived on an installation that was home to the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft (it was the successor to the U-2). While the DoD acknowledged the existence of the SR-71, details about the craft were classified. Everyone on base called it the "Habu" after the venomous snake native to where I was living at the time. This mention of Area 51 in the CIA document is actually not the first time that a part of the government acknowledged the existence of Area 51. Government officials would state that it was there, but wouldn't comment on exactly what was going on. Something similar applied to a place my father worked at time and again during his military career: Site R. It is called "the second Pentagon," a facility embedded into a mountain. All that anyone was authorized to say was that Site R was there; beyond that, the facility was classified. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raven_Rock_Mountain_Complex

Lockheed employees working on the U-2 and YF-12 and SR-71 would always refer to Area 51 in non descriptive wording simply as 'the ranch'. I knew well the Lockheed term 'Skunk works' (the team of engineers headed by Kelly Johnson) but didn't know 'skunk works' actually goes back farther to WWII when they developed & tested the P-80 Shooting star (1944-45) (designated after 1947 the F-80) which was tested at Murdoc Air base, what we call now Edwards AFB. But the Area 51 we think of was created in the mid 1950's for the U-2 and all that followed.
Steve When WWII began some factories in the American Aircraft industry still had cloth covered biplanes on their assembly floors. By the Spring of 1945 here, had a river of gleaming new P-80 Shooting Stars pouring off the line here at Lockheed's Burbank California factory.

I think the only reason they are admitting anything now is because of the huge scandal that's going on with the NSA spying on people and lying about it. They probably think that if they admit that Area 51 exists they can fool people into thinking they are being more open and honest. Besides, everybody already knows it exists so they aren't losing anything by admitting it.

www.smh.com.au/world/truth-on-area-51-close-say-ufo-believers-20130817-2s3yq.htmlTruth on Area 51 close, say UFO believers August 18, 2013 A car moves along the Extraterrestrial Highway in Nevada, USA. UFO buffs and believers in aliens are celebrating the Central Intelligence Agency's clearest acknowledgment yet of the existence of Area 51, the top secret Cold War test site that has been the subject of elaborate conspiracy theories for decades. For a long time, US government officials hesitated to acknowledge even the existence of Area 51. CIA history released on Thursday not only refers to Area 51 by name and describes some of the activities that took place there, but places the US Air Force base on a map, along the dry Groom Lake bed in the Nevada desert. It also talks about some cool planes, though none of them are saucer-shaped. ''I'm thinking that they're probably testing the waters now to see how mad people get about the big lie and cover-up,'' said Audrey Hewins, a woman from Maine who runs a support group for people like her who believe they have been contacted by extraterrestrials. ''We're hoping the CIA is leading up to disclosure'' of the existence of space aliens on Earth. ''We know that they're here and have been here for a long time.'' They probably think that if they admit that Area 51 exists they can fool people into thinking they are being more open and honest. Besides, everybody already knows it exists so they aren't losing anything by admitting it. It's an open secret. Hard to find someone who has not heard or not knows of 'AREA 51'. It was a cold war relic perhaps using the social hysteria of UFO's as camouflage. A new classified remote piloted vehicle tested? 'Oh...it must have been little gray men again from their extensive underground bases'. Has the longest runway in the world there too, see Google Earth.
Yet this area is still guarded intensely as UFO kooks will testify who skirt the perimeter enjoying the thrill that gives 'legs' to their 'beliefs'. Area 51 also is an area exempt from government and private environmental inspectors due to it's nasty toxic compounds disposed there, not to mention the adjacent areas used for above ground and under ground nuclear testing in past decades. It's not a garden spot for sure.
I can see a comedy in this. One day it will be announced a date will be set for all to enter Area 51. All the UFO nuts will be lined up at a barrier & at the drop of a handkerchief storm the place like the Oklahoma land rush. Then the guards will be used there not to keep everyone out, but to keep all the kooks locked in! LOL. (Did I just start another conspiracy?...giggles).
Then the government and much of a grateful public will just shut the water off and wait. LOL.
The one thing I have learned about people from UFO investigations is how incredibly igannant most are of the sky above them.
In Maui last week on the beach for the tourists by one hotel, a nice woman with the hotel's permission sets up her large Celestron telescope for passer-byes to gaze through. They are blown away to see the planet Saturn and its large moon Titan. People are astonished Saturn can be seen directly without looking at a photo in a book. Its a real place!
Hawaii is a great place for star gazing. At least in those areas (most places) away from lights and located in the 'rain shadows' where a shadow will receive maybe 4 inches of rain a year in contrast to the other side of the same Island where they receive easily over 200 inches in the same year.
These same people standing around see a bright star lower to the horizon insisting it must be Venus. Can we see Venus please they ask? The amateur astronomer informs them Venus had gone down below the horizon hours earlier.....soberly they were observing the light on top of a moored sailboat mast just off shore.

"The government probably will not release what it knows," UFO researcher Robert Hastings said. "My opinion is that whoever is flying these craft will break the story and will reveal themselves at some point in the future. The CIA is not going to release anything they don't want to talk about." www.openminds.tv/bob-lazar-not-impressed-with-area-51-declassification-1115/Bob Lazar not impressed with Area 51 declassificationPosted by: Alejandro Rojas August 19, 2013 Bob Lazar’s claims that he worked on back-engineered extraterrestrial spacecraft near Area 51 catapulted the secretive base into the legendary status it now holds. Lazar first made these claims in an interview with KLAS investigative reporter George Knapp in 1989, and now nearly 25 years later, the CIA has declassified the existence of what has become arguable the most famous U.S. Air Force base of all. In an interview with NBC News about the declassification of the existence of Area 51, Lazar told staff writer Tracy Connor, “Tell us something we don’t know.” Lazar says, “Everybody has known that for 25 years or so.” He says the actual back-engineering of alien technology went on at a secret location just south of Area 51 called S4. He says he would be driven there from Area 51 on a bus. Regarding the recent declassification Lazar says, “That’s a minuscule baby step forward.” Lazar continued, “Maybe a decade from now they’ll acknowledge there’s an S4.” Recent Google maps image of Area 51. Lazar claims his work at Area 51/S4 ended when he told some friends where they could watch test flights of the advanced extraterrestrial technology he was working on. They would go there at the designated times, often at 3 am, and film strange lights. One night the military was waiting for them and confiscated their filming equipment. Lazar was then questioned and booted from working at the facility. No records of his employment or education exits, because he claims the government erased them. Critics of Lazar’s claims argue that educational records, such as his alleged degrees at MIT and California’s Institute of Technology, could not be erased and somebody, at least a past professor, would remember him. However, no evidence, not even someone vouching to have gone to class or to have taught Lazar at these universities has come forth. United Nuclear restricted area sign Adding to the mystery is the fact that Lazar currently runs a scientific equipment and supply store called United Nuclear. In a recent email to Open Minds, a United Nuclear employee said Lazar’s “companies are involved in several Military contracts and he is a science and technology consultant to Raytheon weapon systems.” CONTINUE READING: www.openminds.tv/bob-lazar-not-impressed-with-area-51-declassification-1115/

The amateur astronomer informs them Venus had gone down below the horizon hours earlier.....soberly they were observing the light on top of a moored sailboat mast just off shore. That kind of reminds me of what I did the first time I went out to view the Marfa lights. I read a guidebook that said the lights were visible from a viewing area just west of Marfa so I drove out there and parked along the side of the highway and sat there for an hour staring at a single light off in the distance. It wasn't doing much other than sitting there. I finally got bored and decided the Marfa lights were the biggest bunch of overinflated nonsense I had ever heard of so I got back in my car and started driving east towards home. Just east of Marfa I came to a viewing area with cars and buses and people everywhere sitting there watching these weird lights off in the distance dancing around and zooming through the sky. The stupid guidebook was wrong. The viewing area is east of the town not west of it. What I had been staring at for an hour was a porch light on somebody's house.
