I lived and worked next to Nellis AFB at various times throughout the younger part of my life. I always enjoyed watching the Thunderbirds and others maneuver overhead. One day I heard a jet on the runway throttling up louder than normal so I decided to watch it take off. This one was different. It kind of resembled a t-39 but it was smaller, louder, and faster.
When it got to the end of the runway and went airborne it angled straight up and hit it's afterburners. It then spiraled upwards and aerodynamically "drilled" it's way up and quickly out of sight in just a matter of a few seconds. This was 30 years ago and it still amazes me.
When I was about 12 I was observing through my telescope in the area above the base during the day and spotted a weather balloon but I couldn't see it without the scope.
One evening just after sunset when I was in my late twenties near the base I noticed people looking West up in the sky so I looked and saw two gold objects which looked to be saucer shaped. I would estimate that they were about 5,000 ft. alt. I watched them "hover" for about 10 minutes at least. With them being over the Las Vegas valley there's no telling what they were. That's the strangest sighting over Vegas that I saw throughout the years there.
When I was in my early teens I went outside and everything was a bright orange
,especially to the North where the base was from my location. It was about 9 p.m. It was
very peculiar looking with the sky and land glowing. I thought at first that there may have been a large fire on the base or worse, a radioactive spill of some type. It turned out being my first sighting of the aurora borealis better known as the Northern lights.
I saw a video somewhere (I'll try to find it when I have more time) of an object that was called "the Nellis ufo". With area 51 and other test facilities nearby it could've been one of our own or.....maybe even just a balloon....or....
Oh wait,,,here it is !
