Here's an enlargement of the thing. I assume the big round thing is supposed to be an eye socket. I don't see anything that looks like a beak though. I couldn't even guess what that crazy thing is. I don't think it is wise for the guy to be holding the nasty thing in his hands though.

Looks like a animal caucus to me. I would of left it in the ground.. I'm editing now.. I wanted to say looking at it again maybe the head is suppose to be profile where only one eye shows on the right side of the head. but it sure would have a large opening for a mouth. what is the large funnel crosswise suppose to be?

Off the cuff, I'd say that it resembles the paper carton of a subterranean yellow jacket colony. I've eliminated more than a few in my time. The opening on the lower right resembles an access point. They can appear rather strange out of context. Other than that, it might be an unusually large specimen of fungus, though I'm not familiar enough with fungi-forms to be certain.
