It seems like every time somebody finds an ancient city near the water they claim it is Atlantis. It's kind of like when somebody finds a bowl they claim it is the Holy Grail, or if they find a nail they say it was one of the nails used to put Jesus on the cross. There are probably a hundred so-called Atlantises scattered all over the world now. I personally think the mystery of Atlantis has already been solved but I would like to hear other people's ideas about it.

I thought the article had merit..it's pretty much where Plato described it as being anyway and it makes sense that a tsunami could have wiped it out with some survivors reaching the mainland. Seems logical anyway. I've found several other articles giving the same general areas as stated by Plato. Plato did mention it was somewhere outside the Pillars of Hercules (i.e. the Straits of Gibraltar), though some think its location would have been more suitable in one of the cradles of civilization. This was a really good article about Plato and his tale of Atlantis unxplained-factor.com/atlantis.htmWhat do you think happened to it Sky?

I personally believe that the legend of Atlantis was based on what happened to the Island of Thera, or Santorini, which lies in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, about midway between Greece, Turkey and Crete. There is another rock formation near there that was known to the ancient people as the Pillars of Hercules. The island was a dormant volcano with a thriving sea port that was the heart of what was then the Minoan, or Phoenician civilization. They were the most advanced civilization for their time and they probably still would be except that the volcano decided to roar to life one day and start erupting. The inhabitants fled to the nearby coastal towns on the mainland to wait out the eruption but when the volcano had spewed its guts all over the place it collapsed into the sea and caused a huge tsunami that wiped out every civilized city along the coast and completely obliterated the Phoenician Empire. That entire civilization was wiped out. Archaeological expeditions to the area have determined that the city that used to exist there was a very close match to what Plato was describing. The only thing wrong was the size. Thera is only about a hundred miles wide but when Plato translated the story from Egyptian hieroglyphics he wrote it down as a thousand miles wide, which would have made it much too large to fit in the Mediterranean, that is why he assumed that it must have been in the Atlantic Ocean which is why he gave it the name Atlantis. He probably just misinterpreted the Egyptian symbol for ten and accidentally thought it said hundred which is why he got the size wrong. Everything else about the island matches perfectly with Plato's description. Here is a link to a website that gives some good details about the theory... www.uri.edu/endeavor/thera/index.html

I never believed their was a race on earth which was so far advance like we are today. I think Plato was like Homer who said there was a city of troy and he seen it. No proof again.. Troy was like 2 thousand years before Homer..and another since Homer..
If we had the Alexander library today it would stagger our minds. I do believe this library existed. Maybe even get the stories straight. They have always said Atlantis was off the coast of Spain.. archeology has no proof, scholars have no proof..9,000 years ago was ancient..to me..2,000 not so long ago..There are sunken civilizations all through the oceans.. maybe some were ahead of the times, and some not.. they had it in the Caribbean years ago..I have watched treasures being brought up and everytime they find a relic it was not an artifact of Atlantis..What language do people think Atantians spoke?

Taking the location in the world they were supposedly in... I want to say their language was either "Germanic" (German based), or "Romantic" (Latin based). I doubt it would have been Slavic... Who knows? ~shrug~

This is an interesting theory on their possible language Lois..sort of an Iberian offshoot.. www.atlantisquest.com/Linguistics.htmlThis guy thinks that possibly the blond influence in Africa might come from survivors of Atlantis..and possibly the Berbers.

Another interesting thing about the collapse of the island of Thera and the destruction of the Minoan, or Phoenician empire is that it may explain a couple of other legends as well. For instance, the is a mythical king named Minos who had a mythical creature called the Minotaur that was half man/half bull and was held prisoner in a huge maze called the Labyrinth.
When the volcano collapsed it created a huge tsunami that totally destroyed all of the cities and towns along the coast. One of those cities had a castle that archaeologists recently excavated, and underneath it they found a huge maze of hallways and passages that very easily could have been called a labyrinth. This may be where that legend originated. Since the Minoans worshiped bulls it would make sense that they might believe that a mythical hybrid bull creature might exist in such a place.
Another legend that could be explained by the collapse of Thera is the story of the Exodus in the Bible. If you read the story you first will read about the plagues that struck Egypt as Moses was trying to convince the pharaoh to let the Hebrews leave. The plagues consisted of things such as water turning to blood, infestations of frogs, lice, locusts, and flies, disease and death of livestock and people, and thunder, lightning and darkness. All of these things could easily be explained by a volcanic eruption. For instance, water could appear to turn to blood as the red colored volcanic ash fell in it, darkness could appear as the ash and smoke blocked out the sunlight...With all of these things happening it is no wonder the pharaoh finally consented.
As the Hebrews left Egypt the Bible says that God appeared to them as a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of smoke by day. Once again, a perfect description of a far off erupting volcano.
Finally, when they were camped by the Reed Sea and the Egyptians were coming the waters of the sea suddenly pulled back, allowing the Israelites to cross, then it came crashing back in drowning the Egyptians. This is a perfect description of a tsunami. Just before a tsunami comes in the water along the coast line does sometimes recede leaving dry land along the shore, then a huge wave comes crashing back in as the tsunami hits.
Also remember when Moses went up the mountain to get the Ten Commandments, the people thought he was dead and they made an idol out of gold to worship. What was it that they made? A golden bull...just like something the Minoans would have been worshipping at the time.
And when they were wandering around in the wilderness, the Bible says that there were people called Philistines coming from the west and settling in Canaan. These "sea people" very easily could have been the displaced inhabitants of the Phoenician empire that had just been destroyed by the collapse of the volcano and the resulting tsunami.
So this one huge disaster, which was definitely of Biblical proportions, could be responsible for all three of those stories...the Lost Continent of Atlantis, king Minos and the Minotaur, and the Biblical Exodus.
