The Dalai Lama is retiring to devote his life to more spiritual pursuits. Lots of people retire but in understanding the Indian spirituality surrounding him..he has been the Dalai Lama for over 300 years..through 14 reincarnations. That makes it a pretty big deal to them. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110319/ap_on_re_as/as_india_dalai_lama_1

What could possibly be more spiritual than being the Dalai Lama?

He doesn't want to be sidetracked by the politics of India. I think I understand the problem actually. Living out a life in a monastery absorbed in nothing but prayer and holy service would be a far cry from dealing with a political structure I would think. Maybe he's just very tired of it.

This is BIG. I read somewhere that the Chinese are not going to let the people choose the next Dahli Lama according to the traditional way of seeing who is in line as a re-incarnate after the last DL dies. So if he is still alive, but not the DL then who is going to be the next one? Or will there be a next one? I am theorizing that maybe this will stop the Chinese from putting in a puppet DL. People will understand that anyone the Chinese choose is not "real".
My heart goes out to the Tibetan people who are being forced into assimilation of the Chinese culture and influx of people into their environmentally fragile territory.
