Colored LightningI was driving through a thunderstorm the other day when I saw something very unusual and extremely cool. The clouds were a dark grayish color and the lightning bolts were all bright pink! It was unreal. Each flash light up the sky with this brilliant neon pink hue that made it look like I was on another planet or one of the moons of Jupiter or somewhere. This is only the fourth time in my life that I have seen colored lightning like that. Once I saw lightning bolts that were all green, and the other two times the thunderbolts were all different colors...pink, blue, green, yellow, orange, red...it was absolutely unbelievable and awe-inspiring! Seeing stuff like that makes me appreciate just how amazingly beautiful this planet we live on can be. I did a little research and found that colored lightning is a rare but not unheard of natural phenomenon. The colors are caused by dust or pollution in the air. Normally lightning bolts are brilliant white, but sometimes particles of dust or other substances in the air can actually cause the lightning to be refracted, similar to the way a rainbow is produced. At least that is the scientific explanation anyway. Whatever it is, it is very cool and I am glad I got the chance to see it.
