Should take them awhile before we have to worry about that one.

Valid point. Ever since it's birth..I've had a squeamy feeling about that sucker..basically because we don't know what we're doing. Catch 22..how can we learn without trying..but in trying we could destroy the world..eh what's a world more or less.

Particles collide in our very own atmosphere at energies far greater than the LHC could ever reproduce. We just can't control and observe them, as we can with CERNs megastructure. Even at the highest energies it can pump out, it is producing VERY small collisions compared to what occurs in nature every nano second. Nothing to be concerned about. Any end of world scenerio can be thoroughly debunked by physics...

"Main article: Safety of high-energy particle collision experiments The experiments at the Large Hadron Collider sparked fears that the particle collisions might produce doomsday phenomena, involving the production of stable microscopic black holes or the creation of hypothetical particles called strangelets.[147] Two CERN-commissioned safety reviews examined these concerns and concluded that the experiments at the LHC present no danger and that there is no reason for concern,[148][149][150] a conclusion expressly endorsed by the American Physical Society.[151]
The reports also noted that the physical conditions and collision events that exist in the LHC and similar experiments occur naturally and routinely in the universe without hazardous consequences,[149] including ultra-high-energy cosmic rays observed to impact Earth with energies far higher than those in any man-made collider."

I will agree though that a fourteen mile ring under ground blasting particles at 99.99999% the speed of light, with a statue of the Indian god of destruction is just a TAD bit ominous though. :/

It's more the idea that they have no real idea of what to expect when it turns those speeds or if the containment field is right. In space..the containment field is a mega-structureless expanse of we-know-not-exactly-what.... a man-made-contraption whizzing atoms and particles crashing and banging about...is less comforting to people who don't think all scientists are completely sane I know a couple and I swear to you..they are just not wired in a reasonable way. Schematics on genius's are a tad off...and I tell them..and they agree But then...psychic folk are wired a bit off the rails too.. If you consider the newest pet theory of ourselves being but a reflection of a deeper reality...then well..it doesn't much matter if we're just a bunch of mirror images. Wonders then..if the 'real' me..wonders along the lines of my wondering...or am I wondering along the lines of her wondering??? Sanity at this juncture..is a moot point Excuse me while I go bark at the moon.

It's the future colliders I'm especially concerned with. Even with recent safety reports, there are too many unknowns IMO to rely upon a scientific conclusion. New particles observed bring new questions and further understanding of what is taking place. On a future larger scale, there is no room for error or OOPS !, we went too far.... factor.

I am all for acquired knowledge..and mental expanse...but it just seems to me that our knowledge of how to do something has exceeded the maturity to consider if we should or not. We'll get to where we need to be exactly when we need to be there..I have ALL faith in this...unless some nut-job blows us up or we find some ancient schematics in gabillion year old ruins and we try it..and it's a schematic of how to kill the evil sun god in the sky who sometimes singes our crops with his fiery breath. Ahhhh a new ice age is born progress.
