Wendigo; are supernatural and malevolent creatures that prey on unsuspecting humans. Algonquian speaking tribes have legends of evil spirits of the winter. They can possess a person, turning them into a man-eater.
The Cree and Ojibwe, believe the wendigo is a monster and cannibal with horns in the Great Lakes region forests of Canada and the northern U.S. The Cree also have the Witiko, a man eating spirit.
The Athabaskan have the wechuge, similar to the wendigo. It is a devilish like being that eats people. Windigos can possess a person, causing them to become cannibals.
Also called windigo, some mass murderers have claimed to be possessed them.
Swift Runner was a Native Cree, in Alberta, back in the late 1870s.
He killed and ate his family.
Vince Li was a man who cut off another man’s head on a bus in Manitoba, Canada, in 2008.
These crimes were said to be committed by people who said they were possessed by windigos.
Another story about people cutting off the head of a windigo, in the 1890s, in Canada, then burying the body under a log pile.
Scarier than Stephen King, Pet Sematary was said to have been inspired by the wendigo.
Windigo psychosis; is stated to be a mental illness where people get the urge to become cannibals. Like lycanthropy, where a human thinks they are a wolf, becoming a werewolf. And similar to demonic possession, when a human believes and acts as if an evil spirit has taken over their body. These are attributed by medical science to be psychological abnormalities in a person’s brain.
But there could also be some supernatural forces in play with these killer monsters of the Great North.
