thetruthbehindthescenes.wordpress.com/ Smoking / Steaming Hillside Phenomenon – Southern California – San Diego – Strange fume event occuring in southern California – Aug 18, 2011 First a fresh lava field erupts off the coast of Oregon, then mystery plumes erupt from lava fields all the way up the west coast from Pisgah area north to the washington state line… a 6.0 magnitude quake hits Baja California, then a hill side in Santa Barbara (just north of Los Angeles) begins to smoke and steam… now.. due south in San Diego, we hear about the ENTIRE county/city having hundreds of people calling 911 to report the smell of “burning petroleum” . Since the hill side to the north of Los Angeles was reported to be “burning tar” from deep underground.. this leads me to believe we are seeing a very large seismic event take place on the west coast. ...

Actually...according to local news...different people smelled different things, no one knows what it was but it's gone now. July 26, there was a 5.9 quake in Baja but quakes there are nothing new..or in any of Southern California. The lava off the Oregon coast wasn't new..just the discovery of it when the underground equipment was checked..the topography was different and they attributed it to an undersea volcano..there are several in the area. There are tar pits under Los Angelas..La Brea is one where it rises to the surface. There was an incident much the same at Hope Ranch in 2006 and they think maybe there was a crack allowing oxygen to reach one of the tar pits and cause the smoking. Probably Southern California isn't about to erupt (I sure hope not) but maybe there will be some new activity along the San Andreas fault. If you ever look at a quake map of California it's kind of intimidating as there are dozens a day..we seldom ever feel. I may get that beach front property yet

Lots of small tremors we don't ever feel up here. I remember when I was in college, my roommate who was from LA was upstairs hanging out with our friend on the eighth floor while I was taking a nap in our dorm room on the 6th floor. All of a sudden she came running up to me and shaking me awake shouting that we had to get out of the building NOW because of an earthquake!!! I looked at her groggily, stretched and yawned and said, "WOMAN! Are you telling me you ran down TWO flights of stairs during an earthquake to come in here and tell me that? Are you INSANE?! These buildings have been around since the early 19 teens. They have survived much worse earthquakes... trust me. It didn't even wake me up... it couldn't have been that bad. We'll be fine. Leave me alone!" I rolled over and went back to sleep... lol... She started babbling about the overpasses collapsing during the LA earthquake and I chuckled and said, "That's an easy question to answer. We make buildings stronger up here than you guys do down there... because you guys rely on cheap laborers who don't do a good job. That's why I don't want to be in that new Wal-Mart building during the next big one. I know that place is going to collapse because they built it cheaply with contractors from out of state. Relax. It's all good. Next time, don't try to run down the stairs... you'll fall and break your neck!" I don't think we have tar pits up here though...

Haven't lived till you've seen LaBrea's bubbling tar and all the poor critters they've dredged up. They have found a ton of fossils..but the tar pits themselves are just plain icky and smelly.
