Into the Heart of the Storm
Either God or my boss has a sadistic sense of humor. There is a monster hurricane barreling in to the Carolina's and my stupid company sends me right into the path of it. This is unbelievable! They usually do send me to disaster areas to deliver relief supplies but there hasn't even been a disaster yet! They could have at least waited until after the supplies were needed.
Not that I am complaining or anything. As much as I hate to admit it, I live for stuff like this. Last week I was sneaking around Area 51 and this week I am going to get blown around by a hurricane. There is nothing like almost getting killed to make you appreciate life.
Of course I am sure the people who live here and don't have any choice probably feel differently about it, but I suppose that is what the relief supplies are for. They are definitely going to need them if what I have been hearing on the news is correct. They say this storm is pretty big...a category 2 at least. It may change before it hits land though.
I can't help but wonder how many people are going to get killed by this storm. It always happens to somebody. Either they weren't prepared or they just took it for granted...or maybe it will just be some freak accident. I admit I have fallen into a couple of those categories before. I drove through Hurricane Floyd when it passed through Maryland in 1999 and I decided to drive across the Bay Bridge despite the numerous signs that were flashing out warnings of high winds and doom and gloom for anybody foolish enough to drive across the bridge.
Everything went fine until I got up on top of it...then the wind started howling like a pack of wicked werewolves and it slammed into my truck like a freight train. The entire right side of the vehicle lifted up off the ground and I watched as the world started tilting sideways. I thought for sure I was going to flip over but at the last second I jerked the steering wheel to the left and the shifting momentum dropped the truck back down on the ground again. I eventually managed to get back down in one piece although I had to fight the winds every inch of the way.
That was a pretty vicious storm. The rain was actually blowing sideways! I remember I got out of the truck and walked a couple hundred yards to a truck stop and by the time I got there by back was soaking wet while the front of me was still completely dry! Of course I got soaked again on the way back.
So now here I am sitting here watching the clouds roll in. The sky was red and orange at sunset...the wind is already starting to blow. It won't be long now. The question is...what is it going to be? Will it end up as a heartbreaking tragedy like the one that hit New Orleans, or the tornado in Joplin? Or will it be just another adventure for me to write silly stories about? We shall soon see. I'll keep you all updated on my journey into the heart of the storm.
